Texas heat-related deaths reached a two-decade high in 2022 amid extreme temperatures
Heat-related deaths in Texas last year reached a new high for this century amid a sharp rise in migrant deaths and soaring temperatures enhanced by climate change, according to a Texas Tribune analysis of state data going back to 1999. In 2022, Texas saw its second-hottest summer on record during the state’s worst drought in more than a decade, according to data provided by state Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon. Climate change has increased the risk for extreme temperatures across Texas, causing higher overall temperatures and summer heat that starts earlier in the spring and lasts longer into the fall — and makes people more likely to experience heat exhaustion and heatstroke. At least 214 heat-related deaths were recorded in the first nine months of 2022 alone, the highest annual toll for the state since at least 1999, according to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services. This figure included 93 resident deaths, many of whom were Texans experiencing … [Read more...] about Texas heat-related deaths reached a two-decade high in 2022 amid extreme temperatures
CT lawmakers promote bill aimed at assisting non-English speakers and increasing voter turnout

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 HARTFORD — State lawmakers joined voting rights advocates Tuesday in promoting legislation aimed at enhancing election turnout, especially among minority communities and non-English speakers. Advocates said that Black and Latino communities also face obstacles, including longer lines at polling places, limited access to mail-in balloting and problems in alerting them when district lines or balloting locations change. A lack of assistance for Spanish-speaking people, who represent about 12 percent of the state population, has resulted in a passive form of voter intimidation, said state Rep. Geraldo Reyes Jr., D-Waterbury. "The state of Connecticut is a progressive state, has some progressive values, but is very restrictive when it comes to voting," Reyes said during a news conference in the Legislative Office Building. "It's past time for us to expand the voting rights." … [Read more...] about CT lawmakers promote bill aimed at assisting non-English speakers and increasing voter turnout
Cohen says DA took phones for renewed Trump hush-money probe
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s long-estranged former lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, says Manhattan prosecutors recently took his cellphones to preserve evidence related to a hush-money payment he made to porn actress Stormy Daniels in the waning weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign. The payment to Daniels, which Cohen says was intended to buy her silence about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump, has been the subject of law-enforcement scrutiny for years, but a new grand jury is giving it a fresh look by a new grand jury. Cohen said Wednesday that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office asked for the phones because it wants to extract voice recordings of conversations he had with a lawyer for Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, as well as emails and text messages. “That way it could be used as evidence if in fact they proceed forward, which, I would … [Read more...] about Cohen says DA took phones for renewed Trump hush-money probe
It’s time to start predicting the 2023 Oscar nominees
Voting for the Academy Award nominations started Thursday, after a pre-ceremony run-up that looked almost normal after 2021's pandemic-bleakened Oscars and last year's untelevised Golden Globes. A reformed Golden Globes returned to TV on Tuesday, nearly two years after the award season's unofficial curtain-raiser was rocked by a racial and ethical scandal that saw Hollywood shun it. The Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild of America revealed the nominees for their respective awards the next day, and the Producers Guild of America followed suit Thursday, giving film buffs enough information to start handicapping this year's Oscars competition. With less than two weeks until the Academy Award nominations are announced on Jan. 24, here's a look at the state of the race and our predictions for the nominees. - - - 'Fabelmans' and 'Banshees' are the front-runners Let's start with best picture. But when it doesn't even measure up to the mediocrity of the original series, "Full House," you've got a problem. The new series, whose 13-episode first season is available for streaming Feb. 26 replicates the setup of the original, more or less. Sci-fi extravaganza "Everything Everywhere All At Once" dominated the 95th annual Academy Award nominations Tuesday morning with 11 nods, the most of any film. The absurdist movie was written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, a duo who also earned a nod for best director.
