Cedars Bakery earns 2 stars for Lebanese manakish

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 21 My steering wheel was smeared with olive-oily za'atar, the dusky Middle Eastern herb mixture, when I pulled into my driveway after my first visit to Cedars Bakery. Some toasted sesame seeds were stuck to the gearshift; and the white box that had held my cheese-and-za'atar flatbread held nothing but a filmy piece of waxed paper spotted with grease. I felt slightly sheepish and wholly happy. During the 13.8 miles between the Lebanese bakery and my doorstep, I had wolfed down the entire cheese and za'atar pie that's known as manakish (or spelling variations thereof) in the Levant, where such garnished flatbreads are a much-loved breakfast item or snack. As soon as I polished off one long, narrow strip of the pie, with mildly salty white akkawi cheese stretched along one end … [Read more...] about Cedars Bakery earns 2 stars for Lebanese manakish

Pierre Gasly believes Alpine can catch top four despite ‘war zone’ in Melbourne

March 31, 2023 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

Pierre Gasly said the target for Alpine in Melbourne is to close the gap between themselves and the current top four. After two races, the French outfit have emerged in a bit of a no man’s land where they have the pace to keep the final five teams behind them but not enough to catch Red Bull, Aston Martin, Mercedes and Ferrari up ahead. But for a team with ambitions to solidify their P4 spot, Alpine will be pushing to move closer to the cars ahead and new recruit Gasly was confident they could do that this weekend in Melbourne. Despite a truncated day with plenty of instances of high traffic, something Gasly described as like a “war zone”, the Frenchman said the goal was to close the gap between themselves and the frontrunners. “I think it’s been a good day overall,” he told F1.com. “For sure not an easy one wwithas the conditions changing throughout, pretty messy with the traffic, [it] was like a war zone this morning in the last sector trying to get through the traffic. … [Read more...] about Pierre Gasly believes Alpine can catch top four despite ‘war zone’ in Melbourne

UH announces creation of mental health task force after multiple student suicides

March 31, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

The University of Houston has announced its plan for responding to the two suicides that occurred at the same campus building in the past two months. The announcement comes after hundreds of UH students gathered on the lawn in front of M.D. Anderson Library last week in a protest aimed at pushing university administration to take action. Students received a letter from UH Chancellor Renu Khator Wednesday night outlining several changes to UH's mental healthcare services, according to Houston Public Media's Patricia Ortiz. UH plans to establish two new task forces, one to bolster mental health resources for students and a second to create both short-term and long-term plans for Agnes Arnold Hall, the building where both suicides occurred, according to reporting from HPM's Ortiz. Khator's letter stated that students will continue to play a key role in shaping UH's evolving response to the recent tragedies. "While we can do certain things in the short term, the long-term … [Read more...] about UH announces creation of mental health task force after multiple student suicides

Supercars war of words over slowdown tactics

April 1, 2023 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article Earlier today WAU co-owner Ryan Walkinshaw publicly accused T8 driver Broc Feeney of over slowing during a safety car to give teammate Shane van Gisbergen an advantage during Race 2 yesterday evening . Speaking on the Fox Sports broadcast, Walkinshaw insinuated that had Feeney was faster to the safety car line he could have taken the lead of the race, and helped WAU driver Chaz Mostert into second. Feeney and Mostert were the top two drivers to have stopped when the safety car was called and were running nose-to-tail. TV footage showed Feeney slowing as he and Mostert approached the site of Jack Le Brocq's crashed car, which had prompted the caution. As the race transpired Brodie Kostecki, James Courtney and van Gisbergen were able to take their mandatory service after the safety car was out and resume as the top three. They crossed the line in that order, although van Gisbergen and Feeney were later promoted to second and third when Courtney … [Read more...] about Supercars war of words over slowdown tactics

Final Four in Houston is cheapest to attend in over a decade

March 31, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Typically, the Final Four is a tough ticket to find—at least at a reasonable cost. But with a unique collection of teams reaching the conclusion of this year's NCAA men's basketball tournament, fans in Houston can get in the door this weekend without spending outrageous sums of money. The Final Four is set to get underway Saturday at NRG Stadium, with the national championship game scheduled for Monday night. According to data from StubHub, the cheapest tickets for the semifinals were just $45 as of Thursday, with the average ticket price for all sessions down roughly 20 percent from last year's event in New Orleans. The cheapest tickets for Saturday appeared to rise slightly to $49 by Friday morning, but a wide array of options are available for less than $100 in the 500 and 600 levels. KHOU reports that this is the cheapest Final Four to attend since 2011. There are also a limited number of all-session tickets—which provide access to the semifinals and … [Read more...] about Final Four in Houston is cheapest to attend in over a decade

UN food chief: Billions needed to avert unrest, starvation

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Without billions of dollars more to feed millions of hungry people, the world will see mass migration, destabilized countries, and starving children and adults in the next 12 to 18 months, the head of the Nobel prize-winning U.N. World Food Program warned Friday. David Beasley praised increased funding from the United States and Germany last year, and urged China, Gulf nations, billionaires and other countries “to step up big time.” In an interview before he hands the reins of the world’s largest humanitarian organization to U.S. ambassador Cindy McCain next week, the former South Carolina governor said he’s “extremely worried” that WFP won’t raise about $23 billion it needs this year to help millions of needy people “Right at this stage, I’ll be surprised if we get 40% of it, quite frankly,” he said. Last year, Beasley raised $14.2 billion for WFP, more … [Read more...] about UN food chief: Billions needed to avert unrest, starvation

Trump and advisers caught off guard by New York indictment

March 31, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

More than a week after Donald Trump had angrily predicted - incorrectly and with no specific evidence - that he would be arrested, the former president had grown cautiously optimistic. Advisers had counseled him that a possible indictment by a Manhattan grand jury involving hush-money payments to an adult-film star would not come for some time - if at all - and Trump had even begun joking about "golden handcuffs," said one person who spoke with him in recent days. But on Thursday, the news that Trump had simultaneously resigned himself to and believed he could wish away finally broke: A Manhattan grand jury had voted to indict him over hush-money payments to adult-film star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign, making him the first ex-president charged with a crime. Trump's team had long been preparing for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's investigation to end in a possible indictment. His top political advisers, including Chris LaCivita and Jason … [Read more...] about Trump and advisers caught off guard by New York indictment

Global stocks rise ahead of US inflation update

March 31, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 BEIJING (AP) — Global stocks and Wall Street futures rose Friday ahead of a United States inflation update that traders hope might prompt the Federal Reserve to ease plans for more interest rate hikes. London and Frankfurt opened higher. Shanghai and Tokyo advanced. Oil prices declined. Wall Street rose Thursday as worries about the global financial system eased following the collapse of two U.S. banks and one in Switzerland. Traders hope a measure of U.S. inflation due out Friday that is closely watched by the Federal Reserve will show upward pressure on prices easing. That might prompt the Fed to postpone plans for a possible rate hike at its May meeting. A softer inflation reading would be a “signal to continue with the risk-on theme," said Tim Waterer of Kohle Capital Markets in a report. Inflation in the 20 countries that use the euro slowed to 6.9% in … [Read more...] about Global stocks rise ahead of US inflation update

How Kevin McCarthy manipulated Biden’s words on debt talks

March 31, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

"What changed?" - House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), in a tweet with a video of clips of then-Vice President Joe Biden, March 29 - - - House Republicans keep pressing the White House to agree to significant spending cuts before they will agree to raise the debt ceiling. A deadline for a deal is fast approaching. Most estimates suggest the U.S. Treasury will run out of maneuvering room to meet its obligations in the summer or early fall - and the United States would default. White House officials have insisted they will not negotiate over raising the debt ceiling, though they are willing to discuss possible spending reductions as a separate matter. Many are veterans of the Obama administration, which faced its own debt ceiling showdown with Republicans in 2011. Ultimately, after lengthy negotiations, a bipartisan budget deal, known as the Budget Control Act, was negotiated by House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and President Barack Obama, along with other top … [Read more...] about How Kevin McCarthy manipulated Biden’s words on debt talks
