Last Sunday, 27-year-old Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick fulfilled a dream of winning his first major at the US Open, clinching the title in a thrilling finish. The joy on his face was a sight to behold as he explained "it is something I have dreamed of since I was a little kid." Fitzpatrick's achievement, however, could not disguise the deep rift that has emerged in elite golf at the moment between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series. In fact, it's more serious than a rift and the buckets of money involved featuring mind-boggling sums are making the whole situation very messy. At present, no one can be fully sure how it will all pan out. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, a strong defender of the PGA Tour, has called it a "sad" situation, referring to it as "the cloud that's hanging over golf." With the British Open at St Andrews only three weeks away, it seems an appropriate time to relate a refreshing golfing story from the past that is not about already rich … [Read more...] about A non-conquering hero! Tricky day: Ok Tae-Hoon plays a shot during the third round yesterday. kolon korea open Ok, a 2020 Qualifying School graduate, got off to a difficult start, posting two bogeys in the first six holes before getting his game under control. A run of three birdies in four holes brought him back under par for the day but he was unable to improve on his score. Conditions weren't easy, as he explained after his round. "It was very windy. The course was tricky. It was hard. I didn't feel good with the bogey on the first hole even though I subsequently made a birdie on a more difficult hole. I was nervous because the shot didn't go well. Your short game needs to be good here," Ok added. A simple exercise to gain distance and play better
Every golfer wants to hit the ball farther on the course to improve and increase opportunities of making the game easier. The distance the ball travels is now a major factor in tournament golf whether we like it or not. As a coach "how to get more distance" is the most common question I am asked. How to get your clubhead speed up and club swinging faster is the job of any good coach. I simply work out what is preventing any player from swinging to their full potential. I check the basics, posture and alignment to determine if this may be causing any of the problems. It is not rocket science. In order to create quickness at the exact moment, the clubhead strikes the ball, all technical and mechanical elements must be spot on. Then strength, stamina and muscle building must be added to the recipe. Newly-crowned US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is renowned for his straightness and being a good putter but his added distance has now given him more birdie opportunities. … [Read more...] about A simple exercise to gain distance and play better
In Gee Chun wins Women’s PGA title after Lexi Thompson falters late
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 BETHESDA, Md. - In Gee Chun leaned over her ball on the 18th green - at the 72nd and final hole of the Women's PGA Championship - then swung her putter back and delivered a pure, authoritative stroke. The rousing ovation and fist pump that followed after the ball vanished into the cup got the celebration started for the wire-to-wire winner in the first women's major at Congressional Country Club. "I made it," Chun said later while standing next to the glistening, oversize trophy. "I'm so happy I made it. My body is still shaking, though." She won by a stroke at 5-under-par 283. Several paces off the green stood Lexi Thompson, who moments earlier had hugged her caddie, Will Davidson, after she missed a 12-foot birdie putt that would have put her in position for a playoff. It was the last of too many misses with her least reliable club, and she was unable to protect another lead … [Read more...] about In Gee Chun wins Women’s PGA title after Lexi Thompson falters late
In Gee Chun cards nine birdies in record round to lead Women’s PGA
On a course that has served as the backdrop for some of golf's most indelible moments, South Korea's In Gee Chun, a mathematics prodigy in her youth, didn't spend much time counting the birdies that led to her record-setting first round Thursday at the Women's PGA Championship. Chun instead was too busy discussing with her caddie an annoying pimple on her lip and how much she enjoyed the kiwis she and her team found at a Korean market not far from Congressional Country Club in Bethesda. The carefree demeanor allowed Chun to declutter her mind, ignore recent travails and collect nine birdies for an 8-under-par 64, a record at the renovated Blue Course and the lowest score in the first round of the Women's PGA Championship, the third major of the season. Seeking her first victory in four years, the two-time major champion completed the morning tee times seven shots clear of a cluster of players, including Americans Nelly Korda, the world No. 2, and ninth-ranked Jennifer Kupcho, … [Read more...] about In Gee Chun cards nine birdies in record round to lead Women’s PGA
