Formula 1 has announced it is to stop the use of ‘walk-on grid girls’, effective from the first race of the 2018 world championship season. That’s the Australian GP. The change will also apply to “our other motorsports series that take place during the Grands Prix weekends”. Sean Bratches, MD of commercial operations at F1, said: “Over the last year we have looked at a number of areas which we felt needed updating so as to be more in tune with our vision for this great sport. “We don’t believe the practice is appropriate or relevant to Formula 1 and its fans, old and new, across the world,” he added. F1 management considers the pre-race grid time “as one of celebration”, envisioning guests and performers to “add to the glamour and spectacle of the Grand Prix”. … [Read more...] about Formula 1 to stop using ‘grid girls’ this year

Stars, cars, but no more grid girls.Formula 1 owners Liberty Media is scrapping grid girls from the F1 shows. The continuing use of grid girls in motorsports has been one of the main discussion points in the Formula 1 offseason. Those who are in favor of keeping them point to the added glamour that they bring to the paddock and the jobs created for -- usually -- young women, while those who want to see them scrapped argue that it promotes a sexist image not in keeping with modern-day sport.Whatever your opinion, the girls will no longer be present on Formula 1 grids.Formula One managing director of commercial operations, Sean Bratches, said, “Over the last year, we have looked at a number of areas which we felt needed updating so as to be more in tune with our vision for this great sport.“While the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Formula 1 Grands Prix for decades, we feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with … [Read more...] about They’re gone: Liberty Media eliminating grid girls in Formula 1

Aston Martin could partner with legendary race and engineering firm Cosworth to co-develop an engine for Formula 1.Company CEO Andy Palmer has already voiced his interest in producing a powertrain for Red Bull Racing (pictured below), of which Aston Martin is title sponsor, and now Cosworth powertrains boss Bruce Wood has revealed his intent on getting involved.“We've done a lot of work with Aston for many years, we're working very closely with Red Bull and the team for the Valkyrie [hypercar], so there's a certain logic to it,” he told Autosport. "They [Aston Martin] also don't aspire to designing it all themselves, so there's a natural fit there and certainly that's where some of those discussions are happening.” What would a brand new Ford Sierra RS Cosworth feel like today Aston Martin has refrained from commenting on the prospect of a Cosworth tie-up, but a company spokesman told Autocar that the brand was open to an engineering partnership. Ford Motorsport boss Mark Rushbrook believes the cost of Formula 1 is still too high for his brand to consider entering – but hasn’t written off a return entirely.Speaking exclusively to Autocar, Rushbrook (pictured below) revealed that he was drawn to F1 over alternatives such as Formula E because of its use of small-capacity hybrid engines.“Hybrid power will be relevant for a long time for Ford,” he explained, “so I’d never say never to Formula 1, especially if it introduces budgets.”Rushbrook said that proper control on spending would be essential for Ford to consider mounting a serious charge for motorsport’s top category. He said that spending at present could easily spiral because “cost reduction in F1 is all relative. If you cap in one area, [manufacturers] will spend in another”.Ford last competed in F1 through Jaguar, which it used to own, in 2004, but it had a lengthy history in the sport that spanned 38 years prior … [Read more...] about Ford Motorsport boss: No Formula 1 until costs come down
