The topic of the SUV killing the station wagon, nee estate/sport tourer/avant or whatever each automaker decides to call them, has been beaten to death in recent years. And still, manufacturers keep rolling out one SUV after another for the simple reason that people line up to buy them. Apparently, Carfection is so fed up with people buying SUVs that they made a video about it. Most petrolheads and motoring journos have been really hard on SUVs and crossovers, as they don’t see the point to the body style. Over-the-top tests reveals that the majority are useless at serious off-roading, hopeless on the track and not good at holding cargo. Those are things that one would assume a tall, lengthy vehicle would be good at doing. But the outlet takes a more grown-up approach to the dilemma. They drive both vehicles and then discuss why one would choose a SUV over a wagon. Instead of butchering the SUV, the hosts try to put themselves into the seat of a regular consumer to try to see … [Read more...] about Volvo V90 Cross Country Vs LR Discovery Sport: Would You Take The Estate Or The SUV?

The 2019 Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo is a dream car in more ways than you might think. Of course it’s expensive; something many of us can only fantasize about buying. But it’s also the literal stuff of dreams. Something that shouldn’t exist in real life. Something that feels impossible. This is, after all, a 550 horsepower, twin-turbo V8 wagon, from Porsche, based on a popular concept that everyone demanded to see production, and for sale here in North America. And, again, it’s from Porsche. I don’t know how this thing is even real. But after a week indulging in its crushing acceleration and sheer weirdness, I’m glad it is, even if it’s not always the best at being an actual wagon. (Full Disclosure: Porsche knows we at Jalopnik appreciate a good wagon or three, so it dropped one off at our New York office for a week with a full tank of gas.) What Is It? The second-generation Porsche Panamera sedan (and the first one to look good, … [Read more...] about The 2019 Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo Is The Dream Wagon That Keeps Up With Supercars
We are in an unexpected golden age of wagons. This year alone, your hardworking Jalopnik staff has tested wagons from Volvo, Buick, Mercedes and Jaguar. Wagons are having a bit of a moment thanks to the crossover boom and how Americans are going nuts over anything with a hatch. But now we find ourselves in what may be the wagon apex predator: the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo. You may recall that we’re currently on the second-generation Panamera, and the first ever good-looking one. Well last time, Porsche flirted with a wagon concept but never actually brought it production. For this iteration of the Panamera, it finally happened, and it is for sale in America. The one you see here is not just any Panamera, either: it is a Panamera Turbo. This wagon has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 pumping out 550 horsepower. Zero to 60 mph happens in 3.4 seconds with launch control, top speed is 188 mph, power goes to all four wheels via an eight-speed PDK, and it’s got up to 49 cubic feet … [Read more...] about What Do You Want To Know About The 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo?
Tweet TweetWith the 2011 Volvo V60 Sport Wagon and it’s naughty sister the R design version scheduled to have an official launch in Britain in December it was about time the Swedish started showing off price labels and taking orders. While Volvo call the 2011 V60 a Sport Wagon you shouldn’t be frightened by that tag as it’s just an elegant way of avoiding the Estate badge. The whole range includes a variety of engines that teamed with appropriate gearboxes and driving styles 51.4 mpg UK and 35 mpg UK and most of them hardly make a difference for driving feel and don’t seem about sporty driving. The most economical version is the 2.0 liter D3 unit (which is a diesel, of course) capable of developing 163 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque while the most fun version is the same best engine Volvo has been selling for years but with updated bits in it. The result can be found in the latest version of the T5 petrol engine developing 240 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque. … [Read more...] about Volvo released UK pricing for the V60 Sport Wagon
Shortly after it debuted in January, we guessed that the updated-for-2018 Mustang GT would offer 455 hp. Unfortunately we were wrong. Ford announced today that the 2018 GT actually makes 460 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, and impressively, runs from 0-60 mph in under 4.0 seconds. Sounds good to us. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below To achieve that acceleration figure, you'll have to order your Mustang GT with Ford's new 10-speed automatic—the same one used in the F-150 Raptor—and the Performance Package. The GT actually gets a new Drag Strip mode, which optimizes the transmission for straight-line performance. "In Drag Strip mode, the engine torque doesn’t drop when you’re shifting," said Mustang chief engineer Gene Widmann in a statement. "You get peak engine torque and horsepower straight through."Drag Strip mode is available on manual-transmission Mustangs too, but if you're looking for the quickest acceleration, get the automatic. In Performance-pack … [Read more...] about The 2018 Ford Mustang GT Has 460 HP, Hits 60 MPH in Under 4.0 Seconds
In the 1970s, Porsche for the first time attempted to build a luxury grand tourer; one that would sit at the very top of the company’s product line-up. A halo model of sorts. It had to be a luxury GT that’s easy to drive for long haul journeys, yet have enough power, poise and handling to be driven like a sports car. The result was a rather odd-looking 2+2 grand tourer coupe called the Porsche 928. Much like the Panamera today, the engine (water-cooled V8s, displacing between 4.5 to 5.4 litres) was mounted in front, with drive sent to the rear wheels, although all-wheel drive variations were later introduced. With an overall length of 4.5 metres, it was the longest car to bear the iconic crest of Stuttgart during its time. Sales proved to be encouraging, but not at the rate Porsche expected. Axed after an 18-year production run, the company once again undertook other endeavours to expand its portfolio, so came the Boxster in 1996, and Cayenne in 2002. Then in 2009, the … [Read more...] about DRIVEN: Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo

One of the most successful hot-hatches locally, at least this century, is the Swift Sport. Famous as much for its price as its performance, you’ll be pleased to hear that the dramatically improved and much better specified 2018 third-generation variant is just $1000 more expensive than its predecessor, the manual going for $28,500 and the auto for $29,990. Given how much better specified this new car is, especially on the safety front - it’s already a five-star ANCAP recipient - and how much quicker it is, there’s nothing in terms of competition to touch it. When you hear the Swift Sport name you instantly think of the vividly coloured five-door that is distinctive for its uniquely vibrant paint job, requiring sunglasses to combat the glare of the lime yellow hue. Nothing much has changed on that front, the latest hero colour, Champion Yellow, almost as bright. There are red, blue and silver metallic finishes too. Only now the car also looks … [Read more...] about Swift Sport Hits A New High Bar Price
