The FIA has also confirmed that a May deadline has been set for finalising the 2021 power unit regulations , as suggested by Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene last week. The fuel allowance change, agreed in today’s Paris meeting and set to be ratified by the World Motor Sport Council, will be welcomed by the teams. They have faced increased fuel consumption due to the higher downforce levels and faster lap times generated by last year’s aero changes, and which have put an extra emphasis on fuel saving in races – something that is not popular with fans. Also confirmed for 2019 are the separation of the weight of the driver and car – with an 80kg minimum for the former – and the use of biometric gloves for safety reasons. As previously reported, there was further debate today on aerodynamic changes for 2019 to facilitate overtaking. The FIA stressed that it wants a decision by the end of this month, which is the official deadline for 2019 rules changes. Teams are … [Read more...] about F1 increases fuel limit for 2019 to help drivers push harder
The company is literally reinventing the wheel Continental has developed what it calls the dual New Wheel Concept; a nifty wheel idea incorporating an outer section called the rim well, and inner section called the carrier star which incorporates an aluminum brake disc. Continental says the design optimizes braking for electric vehicles by reducing weight, while eliminating poor braking performance from traditional brake rotors that can be subject to corrosion. It would also reduce maintenance costs because the aluminum disc is designed to last the life of the car. Optional carbon fiber 20-inch wheels will be offered in two different finishes. As had been rumored , the 2017 Ford GT supercar will shave even more weight thanks to carbon fiber wheels. Compared to the car’s standard forged aluminum wheels, each optional carbon 20-inch wheel is about two pounds lighter, which Ford says reduces rotational inertia by 25 percent. The wheels are manufactured by Carbon Revolution, which also provides the carbon fiber rolling stock that come standard on the Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang . In addition to saving ever-important pounds, Ford says that the carbon wheels help damp vibrations that can cause road noise or a stiffer ride. Primarily, though, for a supercar like the Ford GT, the benefit is in reducing unsprung mass for the benefit of acceleration, braking, and handling. Ford GT buyers will be able to select their carbon wheels either in a matte finish or with a glossy clearcoat. Of course, many aspiring purchasers won’t be able to buy a … [Read more...] about 2017 Ford GT carbon fiber wheels save 2 pounds each
