Porsche Once Built A 911 Prototype With Four Turbochargers
The Volkswagen Group has been selling cars with quad turbocharging since the Bugatti Veyron was launched in the mid-2000s. However, we're learning Porsche had already developed sequential quad-turbo technology many years before the W16 hypercar from Molsheim. As a matter of fact, the 8.0-liter monster went on to use the tech pioneered by Porsche. That's according to Marcos Marques, Project Manager eFuels in Zuffenhausen. A 911 Turbo with quadruple forced induction was under consideration for the previous-generation model (991) sold until 2019 when the current 992 arrived. Marques explained that although all four turbochargers were small, there were still packaging issues that couldn't be ironed out. He went on to mention these four turbos would've been vulnerable in case someone rear-ended the sports car. "We almost used it for the 991 Turbo, because in most aspects it worked really well. It produced a lot of power from a 3-liter flat-six, but also a … [Read more...] about Porsche Once Built A 911 Prototype With Four Turbochargers

Seven of the 10 Formula 1 teams have brought updates to their cars for this weekend’s race. However as they are far away from their European bases, and racing on a temporary circuit where the risk of damage is high, most of the revisions are on the modest side. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Red Bull have brought a mildly revised front wing which is intended to increase downforce, which the team identified as a requirement for upcoming races. They have also made a revision to the floor bodywork around the rear wheels to improve cooling around the inlets for the brake ducts. Their three closest rivals have lagged far behind in terms of performance so far this year, and none of brought alterations on the scale needed to cut that deficit. Indeed, Ferrari and Aston Martin’s cars are unchanged, and Mercedes have introduced a single revision to the underside of their floor. The addition of vanes is intended to improve airflow to the diffuser further … [Read more...] about Pictures: 2023 Australian Grand Prix F1 car updates · RaceFans
A key inflation gauge tracked by the Fed slowed in February
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve's favored inflation gauge slowed sharply last month, an encouraging sign in the Fed's yearlong effort to cool price pressures through steadily higher interest rates. Friday’s report from the Commerce Department showed that consumer prices rose 0.3% from January to February, down from a 0.6% increase from December to January. Measured year-over-year, prices rose 5%, slower than the 5.3% annual increase in January. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core inflation rose 0.3% from January and 4.6% from a year earlier. Both were slowdowns from the previous month. The Fed is believed to pay particular attention to the core measure as a gauge of underlying inflation pressures. Taken as a whole, Friday's figures show that inflation pressures, though easing gradually, still maintain a grip on the economy. Pol Espargaro out of ICU and walking after violent Portugal MotoGP crash
Listen to this article The Spaniard was flicked from his Tech3 GASGAS in the closing stages of FP2 at the Algarve International Circuit’s Turn 10 last Friday. He sickeningly hit a tyre barrier that was not protected by an air fence and suffered fractures to his jaw and back, as well as trauma to his lungs. Espargaro was airlifted to hospital in Faro that Friday before being transferred to Barcelona, where he underwent surgery on his jaw fracture. Speaking during the world feed broadcast of this morning’s Argentina Grand Prix FP1 session, Tech3 boss Poncharal offered a positive update on Espargaro’s condition. “I’ve got very good news, because clearly Pol is so full of life and so willing to come back that he was feeling a bit down the past few days being alone in an intensive care room without the possibility to get out of bed,” Poncharal began. “And when you know him, it must be painful. The good news is he’s been transferred to a normal room, with no more … [Read more...] about Pol Espargaro out of ICU and walking after violent Portugal MotoGP crash
Charles Leclerc hails progress made at Ferrari after ‘most positive’ practice of 2023
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc cut a chipper figure after practice at Albert Park, feeling the Scuderia had made a clear step in the right direction on Friday. While Leclerc finished second on the timesheets in second practice in Australia, it was a largely unrepresentative FP2 session as rain arrived to compromise on-track running. Leclerc had finished the first practice session in fifth, half a second behind the pace-setter Max Verstappen, and just over a tenth clear of Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz. Despite the restricted running, which wasn’t helped by a red flag during FP1 due to circuit GPS data failing, Leclerc felt Ferrari had made a step forward with the time put in on Friday after evaluating different setup options. Charles Leclerc: It was our most positive practice of the season “Quite a bit, I think we did quite a lot of scans in terms of setup direction again,” he said, when asked about his workload on Friday. “I feel like the feeling is a bit better than the other … [Read more...] about Charles Leclerc hails progress made at Ferrari after ‘most positive’ practice of 2023

What It’s Like Racing at the BMW Performance Center
If you’ve never been handed the keys to a high-performance, German-engineered coupe and then told to drive it to its limit on a closed course, let me fill you in on the experience. Space and time narrow to a very small window. At this particular moment, I was in a BMW M4 Competition approaching the starting line of an all-out, 300-foot sprint followed by a requirement to stomp on the brake as hard as humanly possible, smoothly glide into a sharp turn, then mash the gas again. You’re afforded a split second to consider if you can safely brake in time or blow through the cones (you’re fine most of the time). Your reflexes have to recover in an instant to make up the ground you lost in the turn and beat your top speed from the prior run. The BMW Performance Center in Thermal, CA, an hour east of Palm Springs, the home of a high-performance driving school open to all, bills itself as an opportunity to “drive on the edge of physics.” As someone who considers his “edge” the … [Read more...] about What It’s Like Racing at the BMW Performance Center
New Lancia Concept Teaser Image Reveals Circular Roof, Sleek Coupe Shape
Lancia still exists, and plans are in the works to expand the storied brand. We will glimpse that future on April 15 when a new concept car is revealed, but right now we're given a taste of what to expect through a new teaser photo looking down from above. There's certainly no missing the big white circle on the black roof. We don't know its purpose, but it helps define the overall circular shape of the roof, curving aggressively around the rear with a milder arc at the front. The teaser also reveals horizontal lines stretching from the sides to wrap around the rear window. Lancia states these are reminiscent of Lancia Beta HPE from the 1970s, and its Venetian-blind-inspired structure.
