Under Armour says Skechers ‘slavishly’ copied its ‘Protect This House’ ads

· February 11, 2015 ·

Under Armour filed a federal suit against Skechers, alleging the California-based shoe and apparel company violated copyright protections by copying the look and feel of its “Protect This House. I Will” ads — right down to the music. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Baltimore this week, says Skechers' sports circuit training commercial “slavishly copies” Under Armour’s “highly promoted, successful, and recognized” ads.The Baltimore-based sports apparel and shoe brand asked the court to halt the Skechers commercials, and order its competitor to pay unspecified damages, plus profits Skechers received from the ad.Under Armour has not shied away from litigation to defend its brand and advertising in the past. It’s even sued Nike over its use of “I will” as a slogan in advertising. In the new suit, Under Armour alleges the Skechers commercial “consists of similarly lit, close-up images shown in rapid succession, … [Read more...] about Under Armour says Skechers ‘slavishly’ copied its ‘Protect This House’ ads

Behold, the Active Tourists who will buy BMW’s new compact MPV

· July 23, 2014 ·

The launch of the new BMW 2-series Active Tourer took place in the very pleasant Tirol region in Austria. You can read Hilton Holloway's driving impressions of the first full production front-wheel-drive offering from BMW here. When I sampled the car last Friday, the main roads into the Alps were packed with Germans and Austrians heading off for long weekends in the mountains near Innsbruck. It was late morning on a sunny day, and the amount of people not working took me aback. It dawned on me that the collective British workforce might graft a little bit too hard in comparison to our continental peers… Another thing that struck me was that the majority of the healthy looking damen und herren driving to the Alpine countryside were the sort of people BMW is targeting with the 2-series Active Tourer. They are, I suppose, Active Tourists. In other words: adventurous, affluent folk who want to sling the bikes/pets/kids/tent into the back of a capacious, comfortable vehicle and head … [Read more...] about Behold, the Active Tourists who will buy BMW’s new compact MPV

World’s Biggest Mopar Open-Track Day Hits Willow Springs!

· April 22, 2016 ·

Every April, around 40 Mopars from all over the country converge on the arid desert town of Rosamond, CA, fittingly near both NASA’s Neil A. Armstrong Flight Center and Edwards Air Force Base. In Rosamond is Willow Springs Motorsports Park, just south of sun-baked Soledad Mountain. It’s the oldest permanent road course in the U.S. and these Mopars have come to tame it. They are here for the annual All Time Racing (ATR) Spring Fling Speed Festival, an open track day ostensibly for Chrysler machinery (other makes apparently show up in dribs and drabs). Held in conjunction with the Chrysler Performance West (CPW) Spring Fling at Van Nuys’ Woodley Park, the ATR Speed Festival is held the Thursday before the CPW car show and swap meet. CPW’s Spring Fling is Southern California’s largest and most important all-Chrysler car show—an event you don’t want to miss if you live out West. The brainchild of Tim Herren, an ICU recovery nurse at the surgical … [Read more...] about World’s Biggest Mopar Open-Track Day Hits Willow Springs!

1968 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S 340 – Homebuilt Road Racer

· January 14, 2009 ·

Though you might not know it to read car magazines today, there actuallywas a sect of the automotive performance world flourishing back in the’60s that had almost nothing to do with big-blocks. Sports car racinghad gained popularity in the ’50s, at least in part due to Americansoldiers who’d witnessed or even participated in such activity inEurope. By the ’60s, many Americans had become involved in amateur roadracing, and the SCCA was fast becoming as widely known as establishedracing organizations like the NHRA. Bob Reed had grown up during this period, and was one of many Americanswho had developed a fondness for turning corners, so it may seem oddthat he had his sights set on a Mopar when he graduated dental school in1968. Bob knew precisely the car he wanted–a new Barracuda fastbackwith the Formula S package, the hot new 340-inch small-block, and afour-speed trans. Though the Formula S had a sporting image (for amusclecar), Bob’s example actually … [Read more...] about 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S 340 – Homebuilt Road Racer

Mercedes-AMG GT4 First Drive: AMG’s Gentleman Racer

· December 8, 2017 ·

As I stepped around the corner of the customer lounge at the pristine modernist HWA/Team AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany, there they were on a wall-sized photo collage of AMG history, the founders, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. That one photo captures what defines the AMG brand and product. It’s the early ’70s, and these two hard-core Euro hot-rodders are watching over their Frankenstein creation, about to score a stunning upset victory at the 24 Hours of Spa. It’s a big, unlikely Mercedes sedan with an enormous, rumbling V-8 and giant flares. So creative, so unique, and more than a little crazy.Their eyes glint with the passion for performance and motorsports that I share with so many of you, dear readers. So much is written in their faces: determination, enjoyment, intelligence, and mischief.Nearly a half century later, that passion is very much alive in AMG’s latest GT creation.Mercedes-AMG automobiles are represented by their … [Read more...] about Mercedes-AMG GT4 First Drive: AMG’s Gentleman Racer
