Can provide 24 hours of usage during a power outage. BMW has used the Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition 29 (EVS29) to introduce its new stationary energy storage system which uses a battery sourced from the i3 . Designed to help customers "more fully realize their commitment to sustainability," the system seamlessly integrates with charging stations and solar panels so owners can offset peak energy usage costs as well as have an emergency energy supply during power outages. Speaking of the latter, BMW says daily household energy usage in the United States is between 15-30 kilowatt hours so the i3's battery should provide up to 24 hours of use during an outage. The system also seeks to save customers money as it is equipped with a real-time energy monitoring system which can measure energy supply and demand. The energy storage system can then calculate the optimal time to charge or discharge the battery. Interestingly, the system can be expanded to … [Read more...] about BMW adapts i3 battery for home energy storage system
The Japanese carmaker's commitment to green energy extends beyond the garage. Nissan has announced that its new integrated home energy solution is on sale in the UK. The whole thing is managed by a sophisticated computer system to best meet each household's requirements. Starting from £3,881 – which includes the supply and installation of a six-panel solar system, home energy management system, and VAT at 5 percent – the package also uses battery storage (xStorage Home) as well as the solar panels and energy management to reduce energy bills by up to 66 percent.
