King Charles needed a coronation song. He summoned Andrew Lloyd Webber.

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 NEW YORK - Call it the Music of the Knight. Andrew Lloyd Webber, a.k.a. Lord Lloyd-Webber Kt (as in Knight-Bachelor), was pressed into service by his king, HRH Charles III. The kind of service the composer of "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Evita" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" knows best. His Majesty wanted a song. Or not so much a song as a composition - of a sort fit for, well, a king. For the day of his coronation, in Westminster Abbey, on May 6 in the year of our Lord 2023. So it came to pass that Lloyd Webber set down a melody to Psalm 98, the one that goes, aptly enough, "O sing to the Lord a new song." Then he gathered together his flock - "half the kids in my office," he said - and with them the Lord he madeth a demo; the Lord in this case being Lloyd Webber. To a Yank's way of thinking, it is quite the thing for a Broadway composer to turn court … [Read more...] about King Charles needed a coronation song. He summoned Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Alonso showed championship credentials in first F1 race – ex-Minardi boss

March 22, 2023 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article Speaking on F1's Beyond the Grid podcast, Stoddart reflected on Alonso's rookie season as the Spaniard joined Minardi at the age of 19. Alonso joined a team that was close to going out of business before Stoddart's European charter airline company bought it in December 2000, and turned up for his first race at Melbourne in the following year with minimal experience of the PS01 car. Stoddart felt that Alonso immediately proved himself as a star in the making at Melbourne, where he qualified 19th in a car that had been hurriedly built over the winter, before finishing 12th ahead of Benetton's Giancarlo Fisichella . Before Alonso was set to leave the team for a Renault testing contract in 2002, Stoddart added that Alonso's searing pace at Suzuka cemented his opinion of the Spanish driver. He explained that a misunderstanding over a warm-up "glory lap" may have put Alonso in the mood to go all-out in the 2001 finale. "The first race [confirmed my … [Read more...] about Alonso showed championship credentials in first F1 race – ex-Minardi boss

20 years later, U.S. invasion of Iraq hangs over war in Ukraine

March 17, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

There are Freudian slips and there's what former president George W. Bush said during a speech last May. Speaking to an audience in his presidential library in Texas, Bush condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for launching a full-scale invasion of his country's neighbor, Ukraine. But Bush then made a rather profound gaffe, publicly bemoaning "the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq." He swiftly corrected himself, saying "the Ukraine" with a shake of the head, and appealed to his septuagenarian status. Light chuckles swept through the sympathetic crowd. But there are many others who weren't laughing. The U.S. invasion of Iraq, which occurred 20 years ago this week, was seen at the time by critics as both "wholly unjustified" and potentially "brutal" - views that have only become more widespread in the years that followed. The Bush administration sold a false bill of goods to justify its "preemptive" intervention against the regime of … [Read more...] about 20 years later, U.S. invasion of Iraq hangs over war in Ukraine

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 The family of Dalaneo Martin, the 17-year-old fatally shot by a U.S. Park Police officer last weekend, led a march and vigil late Sunday afternoon, saying the teen had been choked before being struck by six bullets and calling for body-camera footage to be released. "Six shots in the back! How do you explain that?" a crowd that included Martin's infant son, Jordan, and the boy's mother chanted as they marched and rode motorcycles through the Northeast Washington, D.C., neighborhood where the shooting took place. The event lasted several hours. Several family members spoke at a news conference after the march. Then, they held a candlelight vigil. A Park Police officer fatally shot Martin on March 18, after a sequence of events that has led to questions from community members and policing experts. At the vigil, Andrew O. Clarke, an attorney for Martin's family, shared what he said … [Read more...] about Family of 17-year-old killed by Park Police hold march, vigil

Alonso and Hamilton ‘would have done the same as Vettel’ – F1 Fanatic

March 29, 2013 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

Christian Horner says Sebastian Vettel’s defiance of team orders during the Malaysian Grand Prix showed he has the competitive instincts of the F1 elite. “He’s a very, very driven individual,” said Horner in an interview with Sky. “You don’t win the amount of events he’s won, the amount of grands prix he’s won, the amount of success he’s had in his career by being a driver that is submissive, that sits back.” “If Fernando Alonso or Lewis Hamilton had been in that position they’d have done the same, if Mark Webber had been in that position we’ve seen him do the same. So let’s not kid ourselves that this is something unique to Sebastian, this is something that’s in any competitive, driven driver’s DNA.” Horner admitted there had been previous occasions where he’d attempted to impose team orders on his drivers without success: “I think any race driver, any seriously competitive race driver, teams orders go against what they compete for.” “We saw it with Mark in 2011 at … [Read more...] about Alonso and Hamilton ‘would have done the same as Vettel’ – F1 Fanatic

Tough end to brutal Targa Tasmania

May 11, 2014 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article Burnie driver Jamie Vandenberg has held on across a dramatic final day to win his first Targa Tasmania modern title. Vandenberg, with co-driver Dennis Sims, nursed their Nissan GT-R home to victory; a chronically sick engine constantly threatening to end their run to the finish line and their dream of winning the event. For most of the final day Matt Close was second in his Audi TT RS and ready to pounce should Vandenberg’s engine fail. But the Victorian crashed out on Ellendale, the event’s penultimate stage, allowing the Nissan GT-R to limp to the finish line with a plume of smoke following his failing car. Targa veteran and past winner, Tony Quinn (above, in a previous event), finished modern in second place, four minutes 44 seconds behind with Brendon Winterbourn third in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10. Canberra’s Barry Faux was victorious in Classic Outright and Late Classic Handicap in his 1985 Mazda RX-7 with a brilliant drive on the final day. … [Read more...] about Tough end to brutal Targa Tasmania

Sutil voted Driver of the Weekend for Brazil · RaceFans

December 10, 2011 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

Adrian Sutil became the ninth different F1 racer to be voted Driver of the Weekend in 2011. The Force India driver, whose place at the team is under threat , won the poll after finishing a strong sixth at Interlagos. Race winner Mark Webber only received enough votes to rank fifth. His team mate Sebastian Vettel tied for second place with Jenson Button, each with less than half of Sutil’s votes. Driver of the Brazilian Grand Prix Weekend poll ?ǣ top three 1. Glamorous Monaco fails to gain high rating · RaceFans

June 8, 2013 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

The Monaco Grand Prix may be feted as the most glamorous event in Formula One but as a race it often doesn’t quite cut it. That was the case again this year as the ‘jewel in the crown of the F1 season’ attained an average score of just 6.132 out of ten. That placed it above only the Spanish Grand Prix in the races so far this year, but it did get a higher score than last season. The build-up to the grand prix was dominated by the revelation of Mercedes’ secret tyre test in Spain. But that seemed to have little bearing on how F1 Fanatic readers rated the race. Views were split between those who enjoyed the action that followed the red flag and those who pointed out there was no real fight at the front and the top drivers were forced to back off and preserve their tyres: I really enjoyed that race: Excellent drive from Rosberg, good luck for Vettel and Webber, bad luck for Hamilton, Button?s finishing position surprised me but was welcome, Sutil was everything Perez was … [Read more...] about Glamorous Monaco fails to gain high rating · RaceFans
