Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 17 DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A gunman stormed the Azerbaijan Embassy in Iran's capital Friday, killing its security chief and wounding two guards in an attack that spiked long-simmering tensions between the two neighboring countries. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said it would evacuate the diplomatic post, accusing Iran of not taking reported threats against it seriously in the past that include inciting comments in hard-line media over Azerbaijan's diplomatic ties to Israel. Tehran’s police chief, Gen. Hossein Rahimi, initially blamed the attack on “personal and family problems,” something quickly repeated across Iranian state media. But within hours Rahimi would lose his position as police chief after footage emerged that appeared to show a security force member doing nothing to stop the … [Read more...] about Fatal shooting at Azerbaijan Embassy in Iran raises tensions

‘Always smiling’: Man who managed ballroom among those slain
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (AP) — For those who made their way to the Star Ballroom over the years, Ming Wei Ma was a bright light, always smiling and encouraging those who came to the Los Angeles area dance hall popular with older Asian Americans. Ma, 72, who managed the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, was identified Tuesday as one of the 11 people killed when a gunman opened fire Saturday night at the Monterey Park dance hall. The victims, who ranged in age from 57 to 76, had gathered there to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Siu Fong said she would sometimes lead karaoke outings for seniors there, where Ma would always say hello to everyone. “He was a very, very kind person, very helpful," Fong told The Associated Press on Monday night while at a vigil. “And he would go into my session and talk to the singers and greet them.” Dance instructor Walter Calderon, who has … [Read more...] about ‘Always smiling’: Man who managed ballroom among those slain
Houston Rockets report card: Grading Stephen Silas’s squad at midseason
The 2022-23 season isn't exactly going as planned for the Houston Rockets . Stephen Silas's squad approached the year viewed by many as a scrappy unit worth watching, one who could at best challenge for a play-in spot while at the very least earning a spot as a League Pass darling. The latter scenario hasn't even come to fruition thus far. The Rockets enter Friday night with an NBA-worst 10–31 record . They rank last in offensive rating. No team sports a lower assist percentage, and curiously, the NBA's second-youngest teams sits No. 28 in transition scoring. The Rockets aren't just a rebuilding team. They're sadly one of the league's uglier watches on a given night. Let's not be too dour with a half season remaining on the 2022-23 schedule. The Rockets do show flashes of promise amid the extended stretches of poor play, and there are multiple individual pieces with All-Star potential. Growing that talent into a cohesive group is now the challenge. So how should we … [Read more...] about Houston Rockets report card: Grading Stephen Silas’s squad at midseason

Sign up for The Brief , The Texas Tribune’s daily newsletter that keeps readers up to speed on the most essential Texas news. Gov. Greg Abbott , in his third inaugural address Tuesday, emphasized that the legislative session would be centered on the historic budget surplus, “parental rights” in schools and public safety. Notably, he pitched a focus on infrastructure that included the power grid, after the 2021 winter storm and blackout left millions of Texans in the dark and hundreds dead. Abbott trumpeted grid improvements that he successfully pushed in the months after but acknowledged there is more work to do. In doing so, he aligned himself with Lt. Gov. … [Read more...] about Gov. The rise and fall of the Chrisleys, the latest reality stars to go to prison
Reality TV star Todd Chrisley wanted to be clear: When his former business partner Mark Braddock testified in court last year that he and Chrisley once had an intimate relationship, Chrisley wasn't taken aback because Braddock is a man. He has never cared about the (rampant, nonstop) rumors that he's gay; he has said he finds the speculation flattering. No - he was offended because he thinks Braddock is ugly. "I mean, a toad. I mean, someone that looks like a thumb," Chrisley, 53, said on his podcast several weeks ago in conversation with his 26-year-old son, Chase. Chrisley was also insulted that Braddock, who is married to a woman, characterized the alleged relationship as "just something he wanted to try." "I ain't that small spoon you get at Baskin-Robbins," Chrisley added. "I'm the whole scoop. You don't just get to sample here." "You're the whole damn scoop," Chase echoed, laughing. Viewers familiar with "Chrisley Knows Best," USA Network's extremely popular reality show … [Read more...] about The rise and fall of the Chrisleys, the latest reality stars to go to prison
Anger grows in Virginia city where first-grader shot teacher
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — When a 6-year-old shot and wounded his first-grade teacher in this shipbuilding city near Virginia’s coast, the community reacted with collective shock. But the sentiment has percolated into rage from parents and particularly from teachers, with many lambasting school administrators Tuesday night for what they called a misguided emphasis on attendance and other education statistics over the safety of children and staff. The anger in Newport News is bubbling up during a decadeslong pendulum swing that's been moving American schools away from suspensions and expulsions, experts say. But some school systems are still seeking a “happy medium” between strict discipline and a gentler approach. During a three-hour school board meeting dedicated solely to public comment, Newport News teachers and parents said students who assaulted classmates … [Read more...] about Anger grows in Virginia city where first-grader shot teacher
‘It’s insane’: California copes with 3rd massacre in 8 days

(AP) — In the wake of the worst massacre in Los Angeles County history, the California governor was meeting gunshot victims in the hospital when he was pulled away and briefed on a mass shooting at the other end of the state. Word that a gunman had killed seven people at mushroom farms in a scenic coastal stretch of Northern California came just hours after Gov. Gavin Newsom spoke of his fatigue and frustration with mass shootings. “I can’t keep doing them,” he told reporters earlier Monday in Monterey Park, where 11 people were killed at a dance studio. “Saying the same thing over and over and over again, it’s insane.” Yet Newsom was in Half Moon Bay on Tuesday to address the third mass shooting in just over a week in a state with some of the nation's toughest gun laws and … [Read more...] about ‘It’s insane’: California copes with 3rd massacre in 8 days
“Light at the end of the tunnel”: Vijay Mallya exclusive interview | F1 | RaceFans
The team has slipped from fourth in the constructors’ championship – for two years running – to sixth as 2018 reaches its midway point. The team principal, unable to attend all but one race per year due to ongoing legal problems, stepped down as managing director earlier this year. But Vijay Mallya believes there’s “light at the end of the tunnel” for Force India, as he told @DieterRencken in an exclusive interview. Vijay Mallya has two sporting passions: cricket and motor racing, both activities he fell in love with at an early age. Born into a family of substantial wealth – acquired initially from liquor trading – the now 62-year-old had the means to pursue both sports as competitor and team owner, having variously raced in Indian Formula Libre using Ensign F1 (and other) chassis. In 1996, during Benetton’s post- Michael Schumacher era, Mallya’s Kingfisher lager brand sponsored the team, while 11 years later Toyota’s TF107 carried “Fly Kingfisher” messages in a deal said … [Read more...] about “Light at the end of the tunnel”: Vijay Mallya exclusive interview | F1 | RaceFans
As Dnipro deaths mount, survivors plead for anti-missile defense
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 DNIPRO, Ukraine - Anger and grief consumed this central Ukrainian city Sunday as rescue workers continued to dig for survivors in the wreckage of an apartment block that collapsed when a Russian missile struck it the day before, killing at least 30 people and wounding dozens of others, including children. The brazen, midday attack on civilians in their homes has renewed urgent calls for Ukraine's allies to immediately provide the country with upgraded air defenses that can help repel the missiles used in the attack, which officials here said their current system cannot detect. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said the death toll from the attack had risen to at least 30, added Sunday that another 30 residents were unaccounted for. Hundreds of civilians gathered at the scene Sunday, rattled by the strike on Dnipro, which has been known as a relatively safe haven for the past … [Read more...] about As Dnipro deaths mount, survivors plead for anti-missile defense
