Demand is high for the 1500. For all of the problems plaguing the automotive industry, pickup trucks aren’t one of them. Demand for the big workhorses hasn’t slipped much despite the coronavirus pandemic and semiconductor shortage eating into production. The demand has forced Stellantis , Ram’s new overseer, to kick pickup truck production into high gear. The Detroit Free Press reports that skilled trades workers will soon be clocking 84-hour workweeks to build the 1500 . The extra hours are being added at the automaker’s Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan, where the company builds the 1500. Some of the workers will be expected to work seven days on followed by seven days off; however, affected workers shared their displeasure about the work schedule with the Free Press . Many told the publication that they’re frustrated with the long, disruptive shifts, though the alternative they could have chosen would have required even more disruptive rotations. … [Read more...] about Stellantis Starting 84-Hour Work Week At Ram Truck Plant

Skoda remembers the 1966 Trekka, Kodiaq’s ancestor
Based on the original Octavia, the Trekka was launched 50 years ago. The Kodiaq SUV is shaping up to be Skoda’s most important launch after the first-gen modern Octavia from 1996, so it’s no wonder the VW-owned Czech marque is pulling out all the stops to let everyone know the Kodiaq has arrived. Long before the brand’s first SUV, Skoda’s underpinnings served as foundation for the very affordable Trekka, which went on sale half a century ago bearing some resemblance to the Land Rover Series I. Described as being a “lightweight off-road vehicle” and quite possibly the first car designed and built in New Zealand, the Trekka was launched on December 2, 1966. Using a modified chassis of the original Octavia Combi, it was shipped from Mladá Boleslav in a disassembled state due to customs and tax reasons. Compared to the classic Octavia, the Trekka had a shorter wheelbase and a modified axle ratio together with chunkier tires and a more generous ground clearance of 190 … [Read more...] about Skoda remembers the 1966 Trekka, Kodiaq’s ancestor
Renault Megane EV Spied For First Time, Looks Similar To Concept
Renault should reveal the hatchback later this year. Last year, Renault previewed a future EV with the Megane eVision concept . The automaker announced the production version would debut in 2021, and it looks like the company will keep its promise. Our spy photographers have caught the all-electric hatch for the first time testing in northern Sweden. Its swirly camouflage hides its design, though it looks quite similar to the concept, something we expect will hold true for the production version. Renault’s new electric Megane five-door will ride on the CMF-EV platform jointly developed with Nissan as a part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance that’s undergoing a realignment. It’s the same platform that underpins the 2022 Nissan Ariya . The design, however, should be unique, with Renault boss Luca De Meo saying last year that the concept’s appearance is about 95 percent similar to that of the production car’s.
