Patterson was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 39th round Wednesday, as the No. 1,169 selection of the Major League Draft. He is listed as a third baseman from Michigan, although he hasn’t played for the Wolverines, nor did he play at Ole Miss, his school before Michigan. Patterson quietly went through a pre-draft workout with the Rangers, the Dallas Morning News reported. The pick, in the second-to-last round of the three-day draft, prompted some fun on Twitter by the Michigan baseball and football accounts. Patterson, who transferred to Ole Miss and is expected to compete for the Wolverines' starting quarterback spot, has not played organized baseball since his junior year of high school. Patterson was drafted as a third baseman as the 1,169th overall pick. Patterson joins Oklahoma's Kyler Murray notable college quarterback to be taken in this year's draft. However, Patterson's situation is nowhere near Murray's, who was taken No. 9 overall by the Oakland Athletics and has reportedly been offered a signing bonus near $5 million. Patterson started the first seven games of the year for Ole Miss, throwing for 2,259 yards and 17 touchdowns. He won it in December, after putting together one of the best years a single Michigan football player's ever had. So while he's not about to crown someone who hasn't earned it, he knows an intriguing player when he sees one.
