Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 4:17 PM EDT Oct 27, 2018 Are the Detroit Red Wings going to finish the season with eight victories? That’s the pace they're on after a 10-game start that has been even worse than expected. The Wings are the only NHL team with only one win. They entered Saturday with the league’s worst goals-against average (4.00), and their inability to score has led to a goals-for average (2.10) that ranks 28th out of 31 teams. When the Wings began the season on Oct. 4, they looked like they felt good about themselves, talking about how they’d prove outsiders wrong and reach the playoffs. Then reality set in, as a starting lineup with as many as four rookie defensemen and an early schedule crammed with some of the NHL's best teams led to a 1-7-2 start. “We’ve played good hockey at times but some really bad hockey, too,” center Frans Nielsen said. “I guess very inconsistent is the … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings need vets to step up after 1-7-2 start

The game was never in question after the Tigers scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, chasing left-hander Cole Hamels. Nicholas Castellanos opened the scoring with a solo shot. Hamels wasn’t helped by his defense: Delino DeShields Jr. misplayed a line drive in center field, allowing three runs to score. Mike Fiers continued his strong pitching, allowing one run over six innings. The Tigers have won two straight games. They are 40-51. Starting off: Fiers, steady as ever this season, was unfazed by the early cushion provided to him by the Tigers’ offense. He pitched to contact and was plenty effective. Fiers allowed one run on five hits. His only blemish was a solo home run by Rougned Odor in the sixth inning. Fiers walked one batter and struck out six. Anthony Fenech Detroit Free Press Published 2:19 p.m. UTC Jun 8, 2018 At Fenway Park What happened: The Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox, 7-2, on Thursday night at Fenway Park. The Tigers jumped all over rookie Jalen Beeks — who was making his Major League debut — to stave off a series sweep. The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning, capped by a two-run home run from Leonys Martin. Though his outing started off shaky, Matt Boyd was very solid, turning in six-plus innings of two-run baseball. The Tigers are 30-34. Starting off: Boyd’s night began by allowing a lead-off home run to Andrew Benintendi. There were walks and plenty of hard contact early, but he quickly steadied the ship. His biggest outs came in the second inning, with the bases loaded, getting Benintendi to ground into an inning-ending double play. Boyd continues to impress with his maturity on the mound. He pitched into the seventh inning, allowing two runs on four hits. He walked four … [Read more...] about Detroit Tigers take advantage of Red Sox rookie, avoid sweep, 7-2
