Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 EDITORS: EMBARGOED UNTIL SUNDAY, MARCH 19 - - - PITTSBURGH - During every Adam Sandler stand-up show, he straps on his electric guitar and sings a song. Unlike the bite-size ditties he's peppered through the set about selfies or baggy shorts, this one concerns his late, great "Saturday Night Live" buddy, Chris Farley. It is a perfect tribute. Sandler, singing softly as he strums in G, captures the complicated beauty of Farley as clips of his most memorable high jinks play on a giant screen behind him. The crowd roars as he references Farley's electrifying SNL turns as a Chippendales dancer and a motivational speaker "living in a van down by the river." There is a hush as Sandler slips into the bridge, a peek into his friend's vulnerability. "I saw him in the office, crying with his headphones on "Listening to a KC and the Sunshine Band song "I said, 'Buddy, how the hell is … [Read more...] about Adam Sandler doesn’t need your respect. A deadly fungal infection is spreading in hospitals. Here’s what to know.

A deadly fungal infection is spreading at "an alarming rate" inside health facilities and long-term-care hospitals across the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday. Here's what to know about the highly drug-resistant fungus - a strain of a kind of yeast known as Candida auris (or C. auris for short) that the CDC says "presents a serious global health threat." While healthy people are not likely to contract the infection, those with lower immunity and people living in nursing homes are more likely to fall sick and be unable to fight the infection, and the outcome can be fatal. - - - What is Candida auris? Candida is a family of yeasts that can be found on the skin and inside the body. Usually, the fungus lives in areas such as the mouth, throat, gut and vagina, without causing health problems. Common types of Candida include "Candida albicans," which causes the yeast infection thrush. Sometimes, however, certain types of Candida can … [Read more...] about A deadly fungal infection is spreading in hospitals. Here’s what to know.

Inside the movement to remake America’s city streets

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 The automobile has been a fixture of urban life for more than a century. Then came the coronavirus pandemic. Congested streets turned into pedestrian safe havens. Now many want to make those changes permanent - but it won't happen without a fight. Golden Gate Park is pretty serene, as far as battlefields go. On a recent, unusually sunny afternoon, the emerald of this city's green space was alive with people moving about its main thoroughfare. Cyclists buzzed past roller skaters, who shimmied around joggers, who lapped the many pedestrians. One runner paused to play a roadside piano. A father and son rallied on a ping pong table. Dogs abounded. The one constituency not present: cars. For some, this fact explained the peace. For others, it signaled defeat. Despite its bucolic environs, Golden Gate Park has emerged as one of the most high-profile fronts in a … [Read more...] about Inside the movement to remake America’s city streets

Biden to protect a half-million acres in Texas and Nevada

March 21, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

President Biden on Tuesday will designate two new national monuments, putting nearly 514,000 acres off-limits to development as part of his pledge to protect a third of America's lands and waters by 2030. The president will sign proclamations to protect Castner Range, a former military training and testing site in El Paso, and more than 500,000 acres around Avi Kwa Ame (ah-VEE-kwah-may), a sacred tribal site in southern Nevada, according to a White House official. The aide spoke on the condition of anonymity because the announcement was not yet public. The Washington Post reported in November that Biden would safeguard the vast expanse in Nevada using his authority under the 1906 Antiquities Act. It will rank as the largest protected area of Biden's presidency. The moves reflect the administration's efforts to protect wildlife while slashing planet-warming emissions by preventing mining and oil drilling on public lands. They follow a flurry of conservation announcements from … [Read more...] about Biden to protect a half-million acres in Texas and Nevada

Religion reporter Michelle Boorstein spent the past year-and-a-half investigating this story and figuring out who was behind this effort and how they got access to this data. She stumbled upon a secretive group of conservative Catholic philanthropists that poured millions of dollars into obtaining data that identified priests who were using dating and hookup apps. As Boorstein and tech reporter Heather Kelly explain, this story goes well beyond the Catholic church and raises red flags for all of us about the lack of data privacy laws and … [Read more...] about ‘Post Reports’ podcast: What priests on Grindr can tell us about data privacy
