McLaren Services, a division of the McLaren Formula 1 team, has been fined £650,000 after being found guilty of two health and safety charges resulting in the death of senior engineer David Oldham. Inspecting the Formula 1 team’s motorhome in October 2016, the mobile building that’s taken to grand prix weekends, he fell from height. Found on the floor of the warehouse, the 55-year-old was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he passed away the following day. During a trial at Reading Crown Court, the jury heard that Oldham had been working on a level with exposed edges while inspecting the motorhome’s ceiling, something he’d already done five times prior. The court learnt that while people had been advised to stay two metres from the edge, that was not in the official written document. McLaren were found guilty of two health and safety violations, the company’s McLaren Services’ division handed a £650,000 fine. Sentencing Judge Amjad Khan said as per the … [Read more...] about McLaren fined £650,000 over the death of a senior engineer in 2016

Lewis Hamilton reveals future space trip around the Moon with Elon Musk
Lewis Hamilton has revealed he has been promised a trip to space from Space X CEO and the second-wealthiest man in the world Elon Musk. As an F1 driver, Hamilton is more than accustomed to moving at high speeds but it is nothing compared to the velocity needed for a ship to break free of Earth’s atmosphere. More than 60 years after humans first landed on the moon, space voyages are no longer just for those trained at NASA and now more and more celebrities are getting the chance to see the Earth from up high. While Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin company has so far made it to 100km, accepted as the the altitude at which outer space begins, Musk is looking to one-up his old foe with trips not just into space but around the Moon. Late last year, Musk’s Space X company announced that they would be taking their first passenger, Dennis Tito, around the lunar body and it seems Hamilton is next in line. Porsche Supercar With Flat-Eight, Twin-Turbo 5.0-Liter Engine Almost Happened
Automakers are rarely willing to talk about canceled projects, let alone share so many tidbits pertaining ultra-secret cars that never saw the light of production day. Thankfully, Porsche shared with renown journalist Steve Sutcliffe from The Intercooler some juicy details about a supercar that was supposed to come after the 918 Spyder. The latter was retired in mid-2015 after a production run of 918 cars. Marcos Marques, Project Manager eFuels at Porsche, had a surprising response when he was asked about why the house of Zuffenhausen green-lighted a four-cylinder Cayman. As it turns out, the original idea was to engineer a flat-eight engine for an entirely different car. It was more than just an idea written on a piece of paper as it evolved into a full-blown experminetal vehicle based on a Cayman chassis. The mid-engined coupe had a twin-turbo, 5.0-liter engine with 750 horsepower and 738 pound-feet (1,000 Newton-meters) of torque. As if that … [Read more...] about Porsche Supercar With Flat-Eight, Twin-Turbo 5.0-Liter Engine Almost Happened
A key inflation gauge tracked by the Fed slowed in February
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve's favored inflation gauge slowed sharply last month, an encouraging sign in the Fed's yearlong effort to cool price pressures through steadily higher interest rates. Friday’s report from the Commerce Department showed that consumer prices rose 0.3% from January to February, down from a 0.6% increase from December to January. Measured year-over-year, prices rose 5%, slower than the 5.3% annual increase in January. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core inflation rose 0.3% from January and 4.6% from a year earlier. Both were slowdowns from the previous month. The Fed is believed to pay particular attention to the core measure as a gauge of underlying inflation pressures. Taken as a whole, Friday's figures show that inflation pressures, though easing gradually, still maintain a grip on the economy. The dramatic tale of how ‘Tetris’ became a phenomenon
Henk Rogers is always looking for the next big thing, no matter the cost. That's why he risked his home and his freedom for "Tetris." He knew the game, created in the Soviet Union, would break barriers and become a hit. So he wanted to arrange to bring "Tetris" to the rest of the world, by getting it included on a yet-to-be-revealed device from Nintendo called the Game Boy. The young video game publisher flew to the Soviet Union from his Tokyo home in 1988 under the false pretext of a tourist visa, illegally entered government buildings and was monitored by KGB spies, all while the country's Communist Party fell apart around him like tumbling blocks. Rogers and a bureaucrat had to meet in parks to break down their deal. "It was dangerous - cars and rooms were all assumed to be bugged," Rogers said in a recent interview from his home in New York City. His journey and the complicated legal battle is the subject of a new film released last week in theaters and appearing on … [Read more...] about The dramatic tale of how ‘Tetris’ became a phenomenon
Facelifted Porsche 911 Targa Spied Winter Testing With New Bumper
The Porsche 911 lineup is getting refreshed, including the Targa models. Our spy photographers have already captured the various 911 coupe and convertible versions out testing over the last several months, and those design tweaks will also come to the Targa. The revamped 911 Targa looks a lot like the car currently on sale. The tweaks aren’t instantly noticeable, but they are there. At the front, the Targa test vehicle has just two horizontal slats in the front bumper intakes instead of three like on the current car. The test Targa also lacks the active aero slats that typically occupy the intake space, but this could be a different engine option or version. Gallery: Facelifted Porsche 911 Targa Spy Photos 23 Photos It’s hard to see one of the Targa’s rear end as it’s caked in snow, but it should receive a revamped bumper and tweaked taillight designs. 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Production For North America Is Finally Underway
It's hard to believe, but the Alfa Romeo Tonale debuted over a year ago. Perhaps it's not so hard to believe for our friends in Europe, where Tonales are already road-tripping across the old continent. Meanwhile in the US, we're still waiting to sample this sharp compact crossover. Now that production is beginning for North America, that wait will soon be over. Built at the Alfa Romeo plant in Naples, Italy, the Tonale is the automaker's first plug-in hybrid. It's also available in pure combustion format with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, but North America will only see the PHEV version. To refresh your memory, the powertrain pairs a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a single electric motor, producing a snappy 285 combined horsepower. All four wheels get power; the electric handles the rear while the engine manages the front. A six-speed automatic transmission changes gears, and for zero-emission operation, a 15.5-kWh battery offers a range of over 30 miles. … [Read more...] about 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Production For North America Is Finally Underway
Gordon Murray T.33 Spider Teased In Sketch Ahead Of April 4 Debut
Gordon Murray Automotive will expand its lineup of supercars with a new convertible. GMA is teasing the T.33 Spider ahead of its April 4 debut, showing off an early profile sketch of the new car that might feature a few new design tweaks that differentiate it from the coupe. We have no details about the car at this time, as GMA said it would reveal the full technical details next week. However, we know it will have a V12 engine powering it. The T.33 coupe features a Cosworth-sourced naturally aspirated 3.9-liter V12, which GMA also uses to power the T.50. The engine makes 607 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque in the T.33, which should be the engine’s output in the spider. It weighs just 392 pounds. The V12 in the spider should be available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed paddle-shift transmission like the coupe. What might take a hit is the T.33’s superb power-to-weight ratio, which is better than the McLaren F1 in the coupe. The weight from the new hardware … [Read more...] about Gordon Murray T.33 Spider Teased In Sketch Ahead Of April 4 Debut
Pol Espargaro out of ICU and walking after violent Portugal MotoGP crash
Listen to this article The Spaniard was flicked from his Tech3 GASGAS in the closing stages of FP2 at the Algarve International Circuit’s Turn 10 last Friday. He sickeningly hit a tyre barrier that was not protected by an air fence and suffered fractures to his jaw and back, as well as trauma to his lungs. Espargaro was airlifted to hospital in Faro that Friday before being transferred to Barcelona, where he underwent surgery on his jaw fracture. Speaking during the world feed broadcast of this morning’s Argentina Grand Prix FP1 session, Tech3 boss Poncharal offered a positive update on Espargaro’s condition. “I’ve got very good news, because clearly Pol is so full of life and so willing to come back that he was feeling a bit down the past few days being alone in an intensive care room without the possibility to get out of bed,” Poncharal began. “And when you know him, it must be painful. The good news is he’s been transferred to a normal room, with no more … [Read more...] about Pol Espargaro out of ICU and walking after violent Portugal MotoGP crash
