With Honda and General Motors teaming up on a self-driving car and GM’s Super Cruise getting the green light from Consumer Reports, it’s already been a busy week for automotive autonomy — and it’s only getting bigger. The U.S. Transportation Department plans to repudiate 10 locations previously outlined by the previous administration to serve as federally recognized proving grounds for self-driving vehicle tech. But don’t think for a second that this means the noose is tightening around the neck of autonomous testing. The Trump administration is preparing a new initiative that will lead to nationwide testing from just about anyone who can cobble together a vehicle with advanced driving aids. Established by the Obama administration in its very last days, the 10 sites were intended to be safe places for companies to test their hardware and collaborate on tech. Considering its timing, the move might also have been a partisan play to … [Read more...] about Feds Abandoning 10 Self-driving Test Sites, Sticking With Voluntary Regulation
Self driving honda accord
WARREN, Mich (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T) will invest $2.75 billion and take a 5.7 percent stake in General Motors Co’s (GM.N) Cruise self-driving vehicle unit, to jointly develop autonomous vehicles for deployment in ride services fleets around the world. Honda’s partnership comes months after Japan’s SoftBank Group (9984.T) made its own multibillion-dollar commitment to Cruise. That puts Cruise in a league with Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Waymo unit in terms of resources and aggressive plans to launch commercial services. Honda, which has lagged behind many of its rivals in developing self-driving vehicles, is paying $750 million upfront for the equity stake in GM’s Cruise and will contribute another $2 billion over 12 years in development work and fees, the companies said on Wednesday. The deal, which calls for Honda to provide engineering expertise, extends cooperation between the two automakers in a technology that has enormous costs and … [Read more...] about Honda to invest $2.75 billion in GM’s self-driving car unit
A self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivan operated by Waymo, the autonomy subsidiary of Alphabet/Google, was involved in a two-car accident Friday afternoon in Chandler, Ariz. First reports indicate the autonomous vehicle was not at fault in the crash — not the "violator vehicle," according to ABC 15 News. This may be Waymo's first accident in its Arizona test program. The Waymo van's side was crumpled. Though Waymo announced in November it would do testing in Chandler without a human backup driver, one was behind the wheel of the van involved in the crash. Chandler police said the van was operating in autonomous mode. Minor injuries were reported. The accident was at Chandler Avenue and Los Feliz Drive. A Honda was eastbound on Chandler when it had to swerve to avoid a northbound vehicle in the intersection, police said. When it swerved, it entered the westbound lanes and struck the oncoming Waymo van. Waymo did not immediately comment on the accident. In March, a … [Read more...] about Waymo self-driving van involved in Arizona crash
Wish you could work or sleep while your car navigates rush hour? Dream on — just not behind the wheel. Despite steady news on self-driving cars, such vehicles still remain in prototype test fleets. Right now, no mass-produced vehicle can fully drive itself. Related: For Self-Driving Car Awareness, Most Americans on Autopilot Don't fret just yet. Many cars have self-driving features to autonomously accelerate, brake or steer. All of them work only in certain situations and still require you to pay attention and intervene as necessary, while some have limits on the amount of braking they can apply. Still, self-driving features can take much of the sting out of traffic jams, highway travel and more. We detailed which cars have those features for 2016 and 2017. Given the advancement in self-driving technology, however, we pared the features down to three essentials for 2018: stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering and hands-free steering. Which … [Read more...] about Which Cars Have Self-Driving Features for 2018?
On any given day, there could be half a dozen autonomous cars mapping the same street corner in Silicon Valley. These cars, each from a different company, are all doing the same thing: building high-definition street maps, which eventually may serve as onboard navigation guides for driverless vehicles. These companies converge where the law and weather are welcoming — or where they can get the most attention. For example, a flock of mapping vehicles congregates every year in the vicinity of the CES technology trade show, a hot spot for self-driving advances. “There probably have been 50 companies that mapped Las Vegas simply to do a CES drive,” said Chris McNally, an analyst with Evercore ISI. “It’s such a waste of resources.”Autonomous cars require powerful sensors to see and advanced software to think. They especially need up-to-the-minute maps of every conceivable roadway to move. Whoever owns the most detailed and expansive version of these maps … [Read more...] about Google won the last maps war. Self-driving cars give other mapmakers a chance to find their own way
