Houston piled on anyway. “We scored early and we kept scoring,” manager Dusty Baker said. “That's the thing we got to do.” Tucker had a key early drive and a stolen base, Yordan Alvarez hit his 23rd home run and Valdez pitched a gem to lift the Astros over the New York Mets 9-1 Tuesday night. Alvarez reached base five times, Yuli Gurriel also homered and Alex Bregman had three hits as Houston beat the Mets for the third time in a week. The AL West leaders swept a two-game series at home to begin a stretch of nine straight games against the Mets and Yankees. Houston is 5-2 in that string so far. “You know, we're playing high-quality teams,” Baker said. “I mean, these guys can score, just like the Yankees can … [Read more...] about Kyle Tucker homers, Framber Valdez goes 8, Astros rout Mets

R. Kelly sentenced to 30 years in sex trafficking case
NEW YORK (AP) — Disgraced R&B superstar R. Kelly was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison for using his fame to sexually abuse young fans, including some who were just children, in a systematic scheme that went on for decades. Through tears and anger, several of Kelly's accusers told a court in New York City, and the singer himself, that he had misled and preyed upon them. “You made me do things that broke my spirit. I literally wished I would die because of how low you made me feel,” said one unnamed survivor, directly addressing Kelly, who kept his hands folded and his eyes downcast. This is a carousel. New York’s 1st legal marijuana crop sprouts under the sun
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (AP) — New York's recreational marijuana market is beginning to sprout, literally, with thin-leafed plants stretching toward the sun in farms around the state. In a novel move, New York gave 203 hemp growers first shot at cultivating marijuana destined for legal sales, which could start by the end of the year. Big indoor growers are expected to join later. But for now, the field is clear for growers like Frank Popolizio of Homestead Farms and Ranch, where a small crew north of Albany earlier this month dug out shallow holes for seedlings before packing them in by hand. “It is an opportunity, there’s obviously going to be a demand for it,” Popolizio said during a break in planting. “And hopefully it benefits the farmers. Been a long time since there’s been a real cash crop.” Popolizio is … [Read more...] about New York’s 1st legal marijuana crop sprouts under the sun
Cheney to debate Wyoming GOP foes after Jan. 6 hearings
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Liz Cheney is returning to Wyoming after a busy week of hearing public testimony before the House Jan. 6 committee to debate Republican primary challengers including Harriet Hageman, her Donald Trump-endorsed opponent. Cheney will likely draw criticism in Thursday's televised debate for investigating the former president's effort to overturn the 2020 election and his encouragement of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. While Cheney has taken a key role as one of just two Republicans on the House committee, she's faced a backlash among Republicans in deep-red Wyoming. The state Republican Party last year censured her and voted to no longer recognize her as a Republican. Even so, Cheney has if anything increased her national profile, out-raising Hageman by a well over 2-to-1 margin over the first three months of 2022. Thursday's debate hosted by Wyoming PBS in Sheridan will be closed to the public for security reasons and to prevent people … [Read more...] about Cheney to debate Wyoming GOP foes after Jan. 6 hearings
Putin: Western leaders would look ‘disgusting’ topless
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin shot back at Western leaders who mocked his athletic exploits, saying they would look “disgusting” if they tried to emulate his bare-torso appearances. Putin made the comment during a visit to Turkmenistan early Thursday when asked about Western leaders joking about him at the G7 summit. As they sat down for talks, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson jested that G7 leaders could take their clothes off to "show that we’re tougher than Putin” amid Russia-West tensions over Moscow's military action in Ukraine. Canadian premier Justin Trudeau joked that Western leaders could try to match Putin’s naked torso pictures with a “bare-chested horseback riding display,” one of his widely publicized athletic adventures. Speaking to reporters, Putin retorted that, unlike him, Western leaders abuse alcohol and don't … [Read more...] about Putin: Western leaders would look ‘disgusting’ topless
Trump sought to lead armed mob to Capitol on Jan. 6, aide says
WASHINGTON -- A former White House official revealed explosive new details Tuesday about President Donald Trump's actions on Jan. 6, 2021, telling Congress that he knew his supporters were carrying weapons, insisted on personally leading the armed mob to the Capitol, physically assailed the senior Secret Service agent who told him it was not possible, expressed support for the hanging of his own vice president, and mused about pardoning the rioters. The testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson, who was an assistant to then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, was the most chilling to date in the House select committee's Jan. 6 investigation. Recounting granular detail and private dialogue, she presented to the public a penetrating account of Trump's actions and mind-set as the Capitol came under siege from his own supporters, who were determined to stop the counting of electoral votes and impede the certification of Joe Biden's victory. Testifying alone, her appearance punctuated by … [Read more...] about Trump sought to lead armed mob to Capitol on Jan. 6, aide says

5 drawbacks to following your passion
(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.) Erin A. Cech, University of Michigan (THE CONVERSATION) After earning bachelor’s degrees in engineering and sociology, I was determined to do what I love. I headed straight to graduate school to investigate the social problems that frightened and fascinated me. For almost a decade, I told everyone I encountered – students, cousins, baristas at the coffee shop I frequented – that they should do the same. “Follow your passion,” I counseled. “You can figure out the employment stuff later.” It wasn’t until I began to research this widely accepted career advice that I understood how problematic – and rooted in privilege – it really was. The passion principle As a sociologist who examines workforce culture and inequalities, I interviewed college students and professional workers to learn what it really meant to pursue their dreams, which I will refer to here as the … [Read more...] about 5 drawbacks to following your passion
