A number of different F1 teams reportedly have “issues” with the leadership style of FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Ben Sulayem took to Twitter last month to openly question a reported Saudi Arabian backed takeover bid of the sport which was rumoured to be around the $20 billion mark. The Emirati said “the FIA as custodians of motorsport” had concerns over the bid and also said the figure was “inflated”. It was the latter that drew the ire of Liberty Media, who reportedly sent a letter to the FIA in which they described the comments of Ben Sulayem as a “major overstep”. There were even rumours that sport’s commercial arm was seeking to have the 61-year-old replaced despite only being a little over a year into his four-year term as president. Sky Sports are reporting that the strained relationship has been patched up and said that “positive conversations” had taken place between the two parties but that a significant number of “high ranking individuals” at the teams … [Read more...] about F1 teams have ‘issues’ with ‘personal style of leadership of Mohammed Ben Sulayem’

Hlavaty, carhop for Prince’s Hamburgers
Deane Hlavaty, one of the famed carhops at Prince's Hamburgers in the 1930s and who later worked for decades for a Houston travel agency, died Thursday in a Houston hospice. She was 89. When she was 17, she joined the carhops at Prince's on what was then called "the end of Main" Street near Brays Bayou. The carhops wore scanty shorts, towering hats and served customers on trays braced on their cars' doors. Hlavaty later worked in reservations for Braniff Airways in downtown Houston. In the 1940s, she worked for Stoddard's Tours & Travel Service in downtown Houston and later near the Texas Medical Center. Hlavaty stayed with the company until she retired in 1994. Following Arkansas’ lead, Hispanic lawmakers in CT seek to bar term ‘Latinx’ in state government
After years of cultural clashes over the use of the gender-neutral term “Latinx,” a group of Connecticut lawmakers is hoping to banish the word from the state’s lexicon. A bill filed recently by five Hispanic lawmakers would prohibit state agencies from using Latinx in any official communications and documents. The bill’s chief sponsor, state Rep. Geraldo Reyes Jr., D-Waterbury, argued that the term alienates native-Spanish speakers, particularly members of Connecticut’s sizeable Puerto Rican population . The use of Latinx as an alternative to typical gendered nouns such as “Latino” and “Latina” has divided many Hispanics and Spanish-speakers in recent years, with some, such as Reyes, describing it as an example of “woke” terminology being promoted mostly by white activists. Others say that the term offers inclusive language for people who do not identify with either gender, and that it has been gaining in popularity particularly among younger speakers. Earlier this month, … [Read more...] about Following Arkansas’ lead, Hispanic lawmakers in CT seek to bar term ‘Latinx’ in state government
Erdogan: Sweden can’t join NATO if Quran-burning is allowed
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 20 ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Wednesday that Turkey won’t allow Sweden to join the NATO military alliance as long as the Scandinavian country permits protests desecrating Islam’s holy book to take place. Turkey, which had already been holding off approving Sweden and Finland’s membership in the Western military alliance, has been infuriated by a series of separate demonstrations in Stockholm. In one case a solitary anti-Islam activist burned the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy, while in an unconnected protest an effigy of Erdogan was hanged. Even before that, Ankara had been pressing Sweden and Finland to crack down on exiled members of Kurdish and other groups it sees as terrorists, and to allow arms sales to Turkey. Turkey has … [Read more...] about Erdogan: Sweden can’t join NATO if Quran-burning is allowed
Texas set to execute Wesley Ruiz despite ongoing fight over state’s use of old lethal injection drugs
On Wednesday evening, Texas plans to execute Wesley Ruiz despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the state’s use of drugs long past their original expiration dates to kill prisoners. Ruiz, 43, was sentenced to death nearly 15 years ago for the 2007 shooting of Dallas police Senior Cpl. Mark Nix following a high-speed car chase. The chase began while police were searching for a murder suspect, according to court documents. Ruiz’s car eventually slid off the side of the road, and Nix rushed over and began smashing the passenger side window with his police baton. Ruiz fatally shot him in the chest through the back passenger window, court filings state. In an active legal battle, Ruiz and other condemned prisoners have argued the state prison system should not be allowed to continue extending the expiration dates of its execution drugs. They claim the use of old drugs violates the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. With fewer pharmacies willing … [Read more...] about Texas set to execute Wesley Ruiz despite ongoing fight over state’s use of old lethal injection drugs
Fred Vasseur predicts Mohammed Ben Sulayem storm will ‘disappear’ when F1 returns
Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur believes the current furore surrounding FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem will soon fade away. The FIA President has found himself at the centre of a media storm in recent weeks, due to a series of incidents that have attracted the ire of Formula 1. The most egregious incident occurred when Ben Sulayem took to Twitter to offer his thoughts on the report from US publication Bloomberg that Liberty Media had turned down a $20 billion bid from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to purchase the sport. “As the custodians of motorsport, the FIA, as a non-profit organisation, is cautious about alleged inflated price tags of $20bn being put on F1,” Ben Sulayem tweeted. “Any potential buyer is advised to apply common sense, consider the greater good of the sport and come with a clear, sustainable plan – not just a lot of money. “It is our duty to consider what the future impact will be for promoters in terms of increased hosting fees and other … [Read more...] about Fred Vasseur predicts Mohammed Ben Sulayem storm will ‘disappear’ when F1 returns
Tom Brady announces he is retiring from the NFL ‘for good’
Tom Brady, the legendary quarterback who established himself over more than two decades as the NFL's most prolific winner and arguably its greatest player, announced Wednesday that he is retiring. This time, he said, he will not change his mind. "I'll get to the point right away: I'm retiring, for good," Brady said in a 53-second video posted to social media. "I know the process was a pretty big deal last time. So when I woke up this morning, I figured I'd just press record and let you guys know first. So I won't be long-winded. You only get one super-emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year." Brady, 45, won seven Super Bowls over his 23 NFL seasons with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is the league's career leader in passing yards and touchdown passes, among many other categories. He was a three-time league MVP and a five-time Super Bowl MVP. Ben Sulayem drama will calm down once F1 racing starts, reckons Vasseur
Listen to this article Ben Sulayem has found himself at the centre of a storm in recent weeks amid a public falling out with Formula 1’s commercial rights holders. Comments he made about what he felt was an ‘inflated’ $20 billion price tag for grand prix racing , suggested in a report that Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund was looking at buying it, did not go down well with F1 . In a letter that F1’s legal department sent to Ben Sulayem, they said that it was wholly wrong of the FIA to be commenting on commercial matters. "The FIA has given unequivocal undertakings that it will not do anything to prejudice the ownership, management and/or exploitation of those rights,” the letter said. "We consider that those comments, made from the FIA President's official social media account, interfere with those rights in an unacceptable manner."
