MotoGP Japanese GP: Binder tops FP2, Marquez and Quartararo crash
After it made its race debut at the San Marino GP with wildcard Dani Pedrosa, KTM has brought its new carbon fibre chassis to Japan for factory riders Binder and Jack Miller. With the new chassis offering better rear grip on the RC16, Binder used this to maximum effect on the soft rear tyre at the end the second practice to go fastest of all with a 1m43.489s, beating the eight-year-old lap record set by Jorge Lorenzo. Binder headed championship leader Francesco Bagnaia by 0.029 seconds, while Aleix Espargaro completed the top three for Aprilia, the top three all surpassing Lorenzo's 2015 benchmark. The Q1 session in qualifying will feature all three previous champions prior to Bagnaia in 2022, as crashes for Yamaha’s Quartararo and Honda’s Marquez left both outside of the top 10. Joan Mir will also join that trio having been unable to replicate his top five form from FP1 in the afternoon. The early pace was set by the sister factory Aprilia of Maverick Vinales, who got … [Read more...] about MotoGP Japanese GP: Binder tops FP2, Marquez and Quartararo crash
How one Marquez’s MotoGP switch can inspire another
Marc Marquez has the entire world neatly in the palm of his hands, hanging off his every word as the saga around his future plans for 2024 seemingly nears its conclusion. The eight-time world champion has a contract with Honda in MotoGP for next season, a fact he has repeatedly stated as uncertainty over his future continues. That hasn’t stopped shock links to Gresini Ducati emerging and persisting. They persist, however, because Marquez wants them to. Insight: How Ducati could be the key to reviving Honda's fortunes with Marquez By now, his struggles on the RC213V this season are well documented. His rather glum first impressions of Honda’s 2024 prototype he tried at the Misano test last week did nothing to dispel thoughts among many that he will, in fact, break contract with Honda. Then he tells Spanish media the day after that “the commitment is this: to try to succeed with Honda, whether in one year, two or three”. At the Misano test he outlined his deadline for … [Read more...] about How one Marquez’s MotoGP switch can inspire another
Mir won’t ride 2024 Honda MotoGP bike in India due to transport issues
Mir tested the prototype RC213V chassis at Misano after the San Marino Grand Prix earlier this month and described the new bike as a step in the right direction, even as he felt it failed to deliver the kind of performance gains he wants for 2024. Following the test session, Mir didn't rule out the possibility of racing the 2024 Honda in the final part of the season but stopped short of revealing where the prototype could make its debut. Speaking at the Buddh International Circuit on Thursday, Mir revealed that he had held talks with Honda about racing the RC213V as early as this weekend's India round. However, apparent logistical issues with shipping the bike from Misano to Asia prevented the marque from giving its 2024 prototype an early debut in India and will now hopefully do so in Japan. "We didn't receive the bike here," he said. "Honestly, I expected it but we don't have it. We will make the weekend as the previous one, so we will struggle, that's it. "They said … [Read more...] about Mir won’t ride 2024 Honda MotoGP bike in India due to transport issues
Quartararo: Yamaha’s MotoGP form will be worse if rider, team “not aligned”
The 2021 world champion was left disappointed with Yamaha’s 2024 engine prototype at the Misano test last week, noting that he “expected much better”. “I tested it and the feeling was… I expected much better from this test, but we have to stay positive and try to analyse what happened to improve for [the] Valencia test,” Quartararo said at the time. “I need to test it more, but like I said I expected better. “The feeling is different, but I think I expected more power and [it] was a little bit difficult to say something positive about this engine.” These comments were in stark contrast to Yamaha team director Massimo Meregalli’s, who told motogp.com: “We could get what we expected before we started riding. “We had some targets to reach. Anyway, the new engine is slightly faster, as we expected, consistently. It looks like it’s also easier to ride.” Quartararo’s best speed during the San Marino GP weekend was 298.3km/h in the sprint, while his top speed in the test was … [Read more...] about Quartararo: Yamaha’s MotoGP form will be worse if rider, team “not aligned”
Opinion: Does the Azores boast rallying’s most spectacular view?
This brings a new meaning to the phrase ‘margin for error’: 10 paces from the turn-in point to sheer oblivion – somewhere you don’t want to get it wrong. A downhill left-hander following a crest on the fabled Sete Cidades stage of the Azores Rally, and below – way, way below – is the water-filled crater of a dormant volcano. Take a look for yourself at the drop… The steep sides of this basin were formed millions of years ago, part of the process of the Azores’s nine islands rising from the mid-Atlantic – then a sea of fury. We’re on Sao Miguel, the biggest of the archipelago, and that greeny-blue body of water is the Lake of the Seven Cities. Not that you’ll find much metropolis here. A long rally history The Azores has hosted rallying for the past 51 years, and while its humble beginnings produced a local winner Luis Toste in his Fiat 1500, the event has since been won by the likes of WRC stars Juha Kankkunen, Markko Martin, Bruno Thiry and Kris Meeke. It’s a … [Read more...] about Opinion: Does the Azores boast rallying’s most spectacular view?
Matt McMurry, 16, tests with Bentley in Sebring before heading to Estoril
On his way to Spain for this weekend’s final round of the 2014 European Le Mans Series, Dyson Racing Junior Development Program driver Matt McMurry stopped in at Sebring to test the Dyson Racing Team Bentley Continental GT3. McMurry (in photo, from a previous race) already has extensive experience in both open-wheel and sports-racing machinery, but the laps he turned Tuesday and Wednesday constituted McMurry’s first exposure to a production-based racecar. "It was an amazing opportunity to drive the Bentley GT3, and to learn from everyone at Dyson, Bentley and drivers like Butch Leitzinger, Chris Dyson and Tom Kimber-Smith,” McMurry said following the test. “It was my first time in a GT3 car like this and the driving requirements are very different from my single-seater and prototype experience. I'm really glad to be adding different cars to my repertoire and can't wait to try it again." McMurry’s sessions were part of a three-day off-season development test conducted by Dyson … [Read more...] about Matt McMurry, 16, tests with Bentley in Sebring before heading to Estoril

McLaren confirm surprise F1 2024 reserve driver plans after Alex Palou’s exit
After their plans for Alex Palou came to naught, McLaren have announced a new reserve driver for the 2024 season in Ryo Hirakawa. Last season McLaren signed Palou for the 2024 season with the Spaniard expected to race for the team in IndyCar while dovetailing that with Formula 1 reserve driver duties. However, a breakdown in the relationship means McLaren and Palou will next meet in court with McLaren seeking to recoup between $20 million and $30 million in damages stemming from Palou reneging on his McLaren contract. McLaren’s 2024 driver line is officially complete His departure from McLaren’s programme has opened for the door for 29-year-old Hirakawa, who’ll join the team for the 2024 championship.
