According to lead management firm enquiryMAX, dealers saw a leap of 26% in the number of leads coming from the service department.This it said illustrated the increasingly data-led approach to selling employed by the UK’s vehicle retailers. David Boyce, managing director of enquiryMAX, said: “The most efficient and cost-effective way to sell a vehicle is to existing customers. “Converting vehicle sales from the service department leads to higher rates of conversion and deepens the customer relationship.” More buyers are using finance to purchase new and used vehicles with a 27% rise in PCP. The average sale price of a used vehicle fell from £21,588 in July 2017 to £20,132 last month. The average price of a part-exchange vehicle also fell from £8,930 to £8,588 over the same period. We’ve seen the 2017 sales figures for both Mercedes-Benz and BMW in Malaysia. BMW sold more as a group (12,680 units of BMWs, MINIs and motorcycles), but its namesake brand was behind Mercedes – 10,618 vs 12,045 units. The guys from Munich saw much higher growth though – 18% for the BMW brand vs Merc’s 2.3%. Just like in Malaysia, the two German premium giants have been looking over their shoulders globally. It was a tight race, so tight that the press release headlines were rather confusing. Mercedes had “Number 1” in its PR headline while BMW had “Number One”. The above 250cc but less than 350 cc bikes category clocked exports of 24,411 units as against 4,108 units in the year before period, a 494 per cent increase. TVS started exporting the 310 cc bikes for German auto major BMW since March 2017. The 310 cc motorcycle and its engine were developed jointly with BMW on a common platform. TVS exported 19,377 units of the bike during the April to December period making up for nearly 80 per cent of the category exports. The company had entered into a strategic partnership with BMW Motorrad to manufacture sub-500 cc bikes for both the domestic and the global markets in April 2013 and TVS has already infused around Rs 4 billion in the venture. While it launched the Apache RR 310 (jointly developed with BMW) for the Indian market only in December 2017, it had started exporting the same earlier.
