The Biden administration plans to end the public health emergency for monkeypox, officials said Friday, as new cases of the viral disease plummet. Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services issued a 60-day notice to lift the emergency declaration, which had gone into effect in August. Nearly 30,000 Americans have been infected by the monkeypox virus since the start of a global outbreak in the spring, and 17 people have died. Cases largely have been concentrated in gay men who contracted the virus during sex. The virus has not spread widely among the broader public, as authorities feared. Fewer than 10 cases a day are being reported, compared with more than 450 a day in early August. "Given the low number of cases today, HHS does not expect that it needs to renew the emergency declaration when it ends on January 31, 2023," HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement. "But we won't take our foot off the gas - we will continue to monitor the case trends … [Read more...] about Biden administration poised to lift monkeypox emergency declaration
Edited by Christian Gregory Amistad. 288 pp. $27.99 - - - The many accolades that one might assign to Dick Gregory - pioneering comedian, best-selling author, civil rights activist, even health guru - are more reductive than the man he was. Sure, his appearance on "The Jack Paar Show" in 1961 was a breakthrough for Black entertainers on American television; his work for social justice, which began when he was in high school in the 1940s, helped break down barriers; and his books, more than a dozen, sold millions of copies. Gregory was passionate, effusive, unfiltered. Even in his later years, he seemed to never turn down an opportunity to grab the mic and offer his frank appraisals. ("Anytime you vote for the lesser of two evils, you're evil yourself," he said in a 2016 comment about Donald Trump. "That's how Hitler came to power.") Gregory spent nearly 60 years in public life, touring until his death in 2017 at age 84. He was, pardon the cliche, larger than life. For … [Read more...] about Book World: Dick Gregory was many things. Filtered was not one of them.
Listen to this article Steiner has become one of the most popular fan figures in F1 as a result of his role in the Netflix series 'Drive to Survive', largely for his forthright approach and colourful language. But Steiner’s thoughts will now be available for fans to read in the new book, published by Transworld and due for release next April. The book promises to be “uncompromising and searingly honest, told in Steiner’s inimitable style” and give fans a look at the inner-workings of an F1 team from the view of a team principal. “Surviving to Drive” serves as Steiner’s diary of the 2022 season, during which Haas went through a turbulent pre-season, cutting ties with title sponsor Uralkali and driver Nikita Mazepin in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Mazepin was replaced by Kevin Magnussen , who took a stunning fifth-place finish on his return to Haas in Bahrain, and would later go on to score the team’s maiden pole position in Brazil. Steiner also spent … [Read more...] about Haas F1 boss Steiner to release book ‘Surviving to Drive’ in April
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Group of Seven nations and Australia joined the European Union on Friday in adopting a $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil, a key step as Western sanctions aim to reorder the global oil market to prevent price spikes and starve President Vladimir Putin of funding for his war in Ukraine. Europe needed to set the discounted price that other nations will pay by Monday, when an EU embargo on Russian oil shipped by sea and a ban on insurance for those supplies take effect. The price cap, which was led by the G-7 wealthy democracies, aims to prevent a sudden loss of Russian oil to the world that could lead to a new surge in energy prices and further fuel inflation. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement that the agreement will help restrict Putin’s “primary source of revenue for his illegal war in Ukraine while simultaneously preserving the stability of global energy supplies.” The agreement comes after a last-minute flurry of … [Read more...] about G-7 joins EU on $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil
ATLANTA - Republicans have grown increasingly nervous about the final U.S. Senate election of the midterms, a runoff in Georgia that reflects larger concerns over candidate quality, infighting and ties to Donald Trump that loom over the party's future. The race between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) and Republican challenger Herschel Walker caps a turbulent election season in which voters rejected many inexperienced Republican nominees tied to the former president and his ideas in favor of Democratic incumbents who tried to keep President Joe Biden at arm's length. Georgia, a purple state expected to factor heavily in the 2024 presidential election, is a final testing ground for these competing forces - and one that has generated plenty of GOP pessimism. Seth Weathers, a Georgia director for Trump's 2016 campaign, previously expressed confidence that Walker would win in a runoff. Now, he said, looking at early voting turnout, "I have more concern," and he is unsure who will prevail. … [Read more...] about In Georgia runoff, GOP worries about Walker, Trump and party’s future
