With his son Sebastian on the list of drivers dreaming of racing in F1, Juan Pablo Montoya has re-ignited the debate for teams to run a third car to give juniors an opportunity to prove themselves. At present Formula 1 has just 10 teams on the grid, although there is space for more as per the current regulations. That means, at the moment, just 20 drivers can compete with many a youngster left disappointed each season. Last season it was Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri, the Aussie having to take a reserve driver role as there were no available seats, while this season his successor Felipe Drugovich is having to walk the same path. They can, to some degree, consider themselves lucky as their Formula 1 dream remained alive while others such as former Ferrari junior Callum Ilott and Alpine’s Christian Lundgaard had to let it go, both instead heading to America’s IndyCar series. Montoya believes third cars could be the solution. Laying out his thinking, the former F1 driver … [Read more...] about Juan Pablo Montoya proposes third car – but at tracks where teams expect to score big points

Rookie teammate Christian Lundgaard scored a podium but only one other top-five, although there was mid-season revival for the team in terms of pace, if not finishes. Rahal told media on Wednesday, “I feel really good about where we're at. I was thinking about this exact kind of media conference last year, and I was pretty reserved in … [Read more...] about RLL engineering team “more focused” in 2023, says Rahal

AlphaTauri engineer highlights Pierre Gasly’s ‘fair’ to say problem with the new gen cars
Declaring last year’s AT03 to be “more peaky” that its predecessor, AlphaTauri’s head of trackside engineering Jonathan Eddolls believes there were times Pierre Gasly tried too hard and it “bit him”. Gasly was undoubtedly one of the stars of the 2021 Formula 1 season, the Frenchman on the podium in Azerbaijan, scoring 15 points that day towards his overall total of 110 that put him P9 in the drivers’ standings. It had pundits calling for Red Bull to give him a second chance alongside Max Verstappen. The team stood firm on their decision not to promote him again, Gasly spending 2022 with AlphaTauri. But unlike in 2022, he didn’t shine as he struggled to get a handle on his ground effect aerodynamic AT03. He scored just 23 points, suffering the biggest deficit compared to the previous season of any driver except Lewis Hamilton. Grosjean hopes to race Le Mans in 2024 if IndyCar schedule allows
Listen to this article Last December, the Andretti Autosport-Honda IndyCar driver was confirmed as part of Lamborghini’s roster of drivers destined to help develop the marque’s LMDh prototype and then race it in 2024. As part of that deal, Grosjean is racing a Lamborghini Huracan GTD Pro car run by the works Iron Lynx team at IMSA endurance events this year. In his debut for the team at last week’s Rolex 24 Hours, he joined Mirko Bortolotti , Andrea Caldarelli and Jordan Pepper and the quartet came home a solid fourth in class – a particularly impressive effort given that IMSA’s Balance of Performance at Daytona seemed to favor the Mercedes AMG GT3s and Aston Martin Vantages. “The Lamborghini is a lot of fun,” smiled Grosjean. “I've enjoyed my time with my teammates in Daytona. The BoP wasn't in our favor, so we knew it was going to be tough. But I think we did a very good job at what we did, finishing fourth and on the lead lap, being so far off the pace. So that was … [Read more...] about Grosjean hopes to race Le Mans in 2024 if IndyCar schedule allows
