How Houston’s The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation got so famous

January 19, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

The homey universe of Ninfa's Houston has had a huge impact on food culture in and far beyond H-Town. For thousands of long-time fans of the legendary The Original Ninfa's on Navigation , this slogan sums it up: "The Best Mexican Food in Texas Since Texas was in Mexico!" The self-taught chef responsible for that food was Ninfa Laurenzo. Born Rodriguez in Harlingen, Texas, she eventually earned the nickname "Mama Ninfa" for the way she cared for the children in her community and the diners at her Houston restaurant. Mama Ninfa went to the big kitchen in the sky in 2001, but she will live on forever in culinary history for making fajitas a wildly popular staple of Tex-Mex cuisine . Ninfa and husband Domenic Thomas Laurenzo opened a tortilla and pizza factory in Second Ward after moving to Houston in 1949, and began selling their fresh packaged pizzas in grocery stores. "My parents also packaged masa harina and bottled chile con queso and hot sauce," said daughter Phyllis … [Read more...] about How Houston’s The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation got so famous

F1 circuits history part 12: 1994 · RaceFans

The 1994 season was a traumatic one for Formula 1. It is often remembered solely because of the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger. But their deaths at Imola during the San Marino Grand Prix came in a season that saw a higher than average number of driver injuries: JJ Lehto in pre-season testing, Rubens Barrichello at Imola, Karl Wendlinger at Monte-Carlo, Pedro Lamy at Silverstone and others. The governing body reacted by imposing changes on the cars; changes to the circuit were brought about at the request of the FIA and also following input from the newly re-formed Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, which remains active to this day. Tanaka International Aida, Japan The second race of the year was held at the TI Aida circuit in Japan (pictured top), and given the title of ‘Pacific Grand Prix’ just as Italy also had the San Marino Grand Prix. The circuit was far too small for F1 cars, very narrow and almost entirely dominated by slow corners. Michael … [Read more...] about F1 circuits history part 12: 1994 · RaceFans

The tragedies of Imola and the traumas of the weeks that followed pushed Formula One to breaking point as the fifth round of the championship in Spain drew near. The weekend began with the threat of a drivers’ strike, which was followed by the mass withdrawal of the majority of teams from the first practice session. And when the cars finally took to the track, another serious crash further heightened fears over safety. But the race eventually went ahead and, for the first time that year, Michael Schumacher failed to win it. But by bringing his ar home second despite spending two-thirds of the race stuck in fifth gear, it was arguably his finest performance of the season. Crisis meeting over safety The Circuit de Catalunya held its fourth Spanish Grand Prix in 1994, and 27 cars were entered for the race. The only single-car entry belonged to Sauber, as Karl Wendlinger remained in a coma following his crash in Monaco . The day after Wendlinger’s crash, FIA president Max … [Read more...] about Hill wins, Schumacher stars on acrimonious weekend · RaceFans
