This week saw the people of the Philippines elect the son and namesake of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos to power -- paving the way for the return of the Marcos clan into the halls of Malacanang Palace some 36 years after they were chased out of it during the People's Power Revolution. Many watched in awe at the apparent amnesia that struck the archipelago. After all, how could Philippine voters -- many of whom were alive when (or at least, aware of how) Marcos Sr's 20-year rule came to end -- back Bongbong, as Ferdinand Marcos Jr is more commonly known as, given his family's history of murder and plunder? Did they not remember the excesses of Imelda Marcos, the other half of the infamous conjugal dictatorship, the inspiration behind the adjective "imeldific" -- meaning 'ostentatiously extravagant, sometimes to the point of vulgarity'? SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — A ransomware gang that infiltrated some Costa Rican government computer systems has upped its threat, saying its goal is now to overthrow the government. Perhaps seizing on the fact that President Rodrigo Chaves had only been in office for a week, the Russian-speaking Conti gang tried to increase the pressure to pay a ransom by raising its demand to $20 million. Chaves suggested Monday in a news conference that the attack was coming from inside as well as outside Costa Rica. “We are at war and that's not an exaggeration,” Chaves said. He said officials were battling a national terrorist group that had collaborators inside Costa Rica. Chaves also said the impact was broader than previously known, with 27 government institutions, including municipalities and state-run utilities, affected. Championship leader Sergio Garcia crashed in tandem with Aspar teammate Izan Guevara, Snipers Honda rider Andrea Migno and Max Racing Husqvarna’s Ayumu Sasaki. Then up at Turn 3 at the start of the second lap Ajo KTM’s Daniel Holgado crashed, with more riders tumbling later in the lap as MT Helmets Honda rookie Diogo Moreira – who grabbed the holeshot – trading the lead with Leopard’s Tatsuki Suzuki. Due to the rain, the race was red-flagged and restarted over 14 laps. However, by the time the race resumed the rain had gone and sunshine battered the track.
