Simonne Kerr, a volunteer at Harlesden’s Sickle Cell Society (SCS), was killed on Wednesday. Publishing its final estimates for road traffic collisions involving drink-driving in 2016 – the most recent year for which figures are available – the DfT estimates that 230 people were killed in accidents where at least one driver or rider was over the drink-drive limit, while 200 were estimated to have been killed in 2015. It’s the highest figure since 2012, when 230 people were also estimated to have been killed through alcohol-related driving. Overall casualties involving drink-drivers have risen less dramatically, but the seven per cent increase on 2015 still resulted in 9,040 people killed or injured across 6,070 incidents where at least one driver was over the legal limit. BRITAIN'S worst roads for potholes have been revealed. The list of shame comes following a Freedom of Information disclosure by each local authority across the UK. And the worst road for pothole-related incidents is Mellor Brook Bypass near Balderstone, Lancs, the Sunday Mirror revealed, with more than 500 complaints being registered by motorists. THE Volvo XC90 has been hailed as one of Britain's safest ever cars. The big SUV has never recorded any fatalities on UK roads since records began, according to latest figures. Analysis by Thatcham Research of police accident stats and insurance claims found no record of anyone ever dying in a XC90. That includes as a driver or passenger and dates back to when records began in 2004. At that point the first generation of the Swedish SUV had only been on sale for two years. And since then around 54,000 models have been sold in the UK with the mark two 2015 model proving a big hit. It was one of the first cars to adopt safety systems that could detect hazards and warn drivers. These have since evolved to autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems which allows cars to slam on the brakes before a crash. Thatcham says this type of tech has the chance to save 1,100 lives in the UK over the next decade - and prevent 122,000 casualties.
