WILLOW SPRINGS, California — Bentley reached out to us to attend a preparation session for their Bentayga W12 Pikes Peak racecar in part to hype up their attempt at breaking the SUV hill climb record while also to giving us a taste of the lifestyle to which the marque’s owners are accustomed. Plus, the brand said we could ride shotgun with Rhys Millen on the track—but more on that in a moment. This immersion began with a drive to Willow Springs International Raceway in a Bentayga in delicious Dragon Red II paint, a $6,000 optional extra that was paired with the $1,400 lower-body paint of a second color. As a first timer in the plush—yet supportive—seats of the hyper-luxurious SUV, I quickly adjusted to the arsenal of conveniences offered in the three-row Bentley. The wood-trimmed interior is striking upon ingress, but the first thing about the Bentayga that really caught my attention was the sheer power of the twin-turbocharged W-12. … [Read more...] about Riding Shotgun with Rhys Millen in Bentley’s Pikes Peak Bentayga Race Car
Driving the Nürburgring is a bucket-list item for any serious automotive enthusiast. But most of us don’t have the chops to handle the vaunted circuit, with its 73 turns and 13 miles (20.83 kilometers) of twisting tarmac. Riding in a “Ring Taxi,” then, could be just the thing. And Jaguar has two of its most powerful and capable performance machines deployed, just for the purpose. The latest additions to the fleet are none other than the F-Type SVR and XJR575. Both are motivated by Coventry’s celebrated 5.0-liter supercharged V8, kicking out 575 metric horsepower (567 hp/423 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. That’s enough to send the top F-Type rocketing to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds (or 3.7 to 100 km/h). The larger, heavier XJR takes 4.2 seconds to hit that same 60-mile mark, making it the fastest, most powerful iteration of Jaguar’s big sedan. “A ride in the F-TYPE SVR and XJR575 Race Taxi is a thrilling and truly unforgettable … [Read more...] about Take The Ride Of Your Life In Jaguar’s F-Type SVR And XJR575 ‘Ring Taxis
Earlier this year, we got wind of a new tire from General called the G-Max RS, which seemed to have some spectacular claims attached to it. General claimed for its new Ultra High Performance (UHP) tire that its dry handling would be light years ahead of its B-segment competitors, have up to 35 percent better tread life, a class-leading 50,000-mile warranty, a segment-busting 360 UTGQ treadwear rating, and an unprecedented 45-day free trial period. What’s more, the G-Max RS just looks the part. Arguably, it’s the best-looking UHP tire in the hotly contested B-market UHP segment, with an aggressive tread pattern, a rounded shoulder, and a smooth, unadorned sidewall. When it hits dealerships in late February of 2018, it will be available in 50 SKUs, many of them in late-model domestic rear-drive performance sizes, such as those for Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, and Charger. Moreover, because of its high grip, owners of pro touring, auto cross, and road-course track rats will be … [Read more...] about General’s G-Max RS May Change The Way UHP Tires Are Made!
If you don’t have a Motor Trend on Demand subscription, this would be the time to at least do the 14-day free trial. Why? Because the guys went back to Dirt Fish Rally School! Back in episode 32, Subaru faced off with Roadkill in a series of challenges, one of which was some rally racing. What better car in the RK fleet to hang sideways in the gravel than the General Mayhem, the 1969 Dodge Charger which at the time had the junkyard 440 in it? Skip to 17:50 if you just want to see the rally action. You asked for it, and on Episode 74, Roadkill is back in Washington for some more dirt-slinging mischief, only this time, they brought some more fun. After they run through the course in a semi-truck (no, seriously, a semi-truck) with an instructor riding shotgun, David and Mike tackle the course in some of the most popular cars from the lineup. The off-road Hornet; the Disgustang; the Crusher Impala; Laphonda; Datsun mini-truck; the Mazdaratti; and Nascarlo are all there to tear up the … [Read more...] about Roadkill takes on Dirt Fish Rally School… AGAIN!
With the unfortunate passing of pioneering race driver and engineer Dan Gurney, there will be many retellings of his fantastic accomplishments, such as winning the Belgian Grand Prix in his own freaking car and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans. But no one else has the story of the day Dan Gurney did not die, and it happened because I didn’t kill him. In 2004, Gurney was, along with Jackie Stewart, one of the racing luminaries Ford lured to the media launch program for the ’04 Ford GT. It was during Monterey Car Week, and there was a dinner in Carmel with Jay Leno and other retired GT40 racers like Lloyd Ruby.Following Sunday’s historic races at Laguna Seca, Ford had the track reserved for journalists to drive the new GT at speed on Monday. It was my first time at Laguna Seca, and I knew from watching that the track was fast and did not suffer fools gladly. Following an early morning van ride to learn approximately which way the pavement went, we were dropped in the pit … [Read more...] about Recounting an unforgettable Ford GT drive with Dan Gurney
► We take a spin in a 286bhp rally Fabia ► Fresh from winning the 2017 WRC 2 championship► What does the future hold for Skoda Motorsport? What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you read the words Skoda Fabia? A cheap, practical supermini that’s still fighting to change the average car buyer’s view of the Skoda brand? Or maybe that TV ad in 2006 where a team of bakers crafted a scale model Fabia out of cake? Well, for those who’ve taken a keen interest in motorsport over the last few years, the humble Skoda resembles something of a championship-winning machine. This year alone, its all-wheel drive rally-prepped alter ego – the Fabia R5 – has taken the WRC 2 (World Rally Championship 2), Asia Pacific, South American, African and European ERC Junior U28 Rally titles, not to mention another 14 national crowns around the world. Of the 13 rallies during the WRC 2 season, 10 were won by crews in … [Read more...] about We ride shotgun in Skoda’s championship-winning Fabia R5 rally car
A low, leaden sky shrouds distant office blocks, and wintry rain threatens to escalate into snow. We’re standing outside a nondescript building in a nondescript industrial park in East London, looking at three Porsche Panamera Sport Turismos parked in a small compound. There’s military-spec fencing all around, and strategically placed cameras stare balefully back at us. Police motorcycle outriders are parked in formation at the end of the street.Read our reviews of the Panamera Sport Turismo HERE and the nearly $190,000 Turbo S E-Hybrid model HERE.The security is real—and for good reason. We’re about to transport $14 million worth of gold bars 12 miles through central London. In these Porsches.London bullion merchant Baird & Co. buys and sells gold, along with platinum, palladium, rhodium, silver, and other precious metals. It refines gold, too, turning hundreds of millions of dollars of the precious metal into 99.99 percent pure “market bars.” … [Read more...] about Gold Rush: Transporting $14 Million Worth of Bullion Through London. The Tesla Model 3, the car that is going to bring Tesla technology to the masses, is finally here. It is not here as in “in press fleets across America,” but it is sitting in the driveways of real customers who don’t work for Tesla, and that, my friends, is what counts for progress in the Willy Wonka world of Elon Musk. So, not knowing when a real, regular loaner Model 3 would actually become available, I, uh, “borrowed” one. Where’d I get it? As they say in New Jersey, “Don’ worry ‘bout it.”The point is that for a couple of hours yesterday I drove a fully loaded Model 3 in city and suburban traffic, around freeway onramps as fast as I dared go with the owner riding shotgun, and I fiddled with that 15-inch touch screen that controls everything in the car. And? Yes? Well? Was it what you would call a “good” car? Yes. More than good? In many, if not most ways, yes. There are advances available in the Model 3 that it … [Read more...] about Tesla Model 3 first drive: Yes, it’s a real car, and a pretty good one too
Last summer, in July 2017, we drove a six-cylinder 1966 Mustang hardtop into the TEN Santa Ana Tech Center in California and began a week-long thrash of completely rebuilding the car. That’s right, we did it in a week and the end product is on the road as you read this.Once the build week was completed and we had a good solid burnout in our pockets (okay, we did ten good solid burnouts) we took the Mustang to Las Vegas where it was proudly displayed in our company’s booth at the 2017 SEMA Show. As the show was wrapping up we had to do a little bit of tuning work in the booth before firing the car up and getting in line with all the other display vehicles exiting the show and participating in the epic SEMA Ignited Parade. With editor Kinnan driving, staff editor Houlahan riding shotgun, and Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords staff editor Michael Johnson folded up in the back seat, we took the Mustang on its first official cruise—right in front of the entire automotive … [Read more...] about Week To Wicked: The First Road Trip (of Many!)
