Maryland survives and advances to second round of NCAA tournament
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Maryland men's basketball team first had to claw back from a disastrous start. And even after the Terrapins managed to do so, they faced another uphill climb after West Virginia generated a barrage of scoring in the opening minutes of the second half. Each time in this NCAA tournament first-round game, they responded. The eighth-seeded Terps are familiar with navigating deficits, but this time, facing elimination, they also needed to close. That's where this team has struggled this season, especially away from Xfinity Center. But against No. 9 seed West Virginia at Legacy Arena, Maryland held on for a 67-65 victory to advance to the second round in the South Region - a significant accomplishment for first-year Maryland coach Kevin Willard. During a timeout with 3:30 remaining, the Terps had just a two-point edge. Willard talked with his team about … [Read more...] about Maryland survives and advances to second round of NCAA tournament
Wisconsin Democratic Secretary of State La Follette resigns
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin's longtime Democratic Secretary of State Doug La Follette abruptly resigned on Friday, saying he was leaving three months into his 11th consecutive term “to focus on my personal needs” after watching the office be stripped of its power over the past 50 years. Gov. Tony Evers appointed former Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, who ran for U.S. Senate last year but dropped out of the race ahead of the primary, to fill out the four-year term. Wisconsin's secretary of state has not been in charge of elections since 1974 and has almost no official duties. “After many years of frustration, I've decided that I don't want to spend the next three and a half years trying to run an office without adequate resources and staffing levels,” the 82-year-old La Follette said in his resignation letter. He did not immediately return a telephone message left … [Read more...] about Wisconsin Democratic Secretary of State La Follette resigns
In Chicago mayor’s race, 2 hopefuls reflect Democrats’ split
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 CHICAGO (AP) — Before they were rivals to be Chicago’s next mayor, Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson both worked in education, though their career paths — like their views on the city's future — were very different. Vallas was CEO of Chicago Public Schools, appointed by then-Mayor Richard M. Daley after Illinois lawmakers in the 1990s gave control of the troubled district to City Hall. Vallas came to be known as a turnaround expert in Chicago and in other U.S. school districts, supporting charter schools and voucher programs. Johnson taught middle and high schoolers before becoming an organizer for the Chicago Teachers Union, mobilizing thousands during a historic 2012 strike and in actions since that focused on strengthening public schools and the communities around them. It is just one example, but a significant one, of the contrasts between … [Read more...] about In Chicago mayor’s race, 2 hopefuls reflect Democrats’ split
Tennessee House OKs narrow abortion exemption bill
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee's GOP-dominant House on Monday advanced legislation that would add a narrow exemption to the state's strict abortion ban, despite concerns raised by Democrats and medical experts that the bill does not go far enough to protect doctors and pregnant patients. The legislation was drastically reworked from its original version that was introduced just last month after Tennessee's influential anti-abortion lobbying group came out in opposition. Tennessee Right to Life warned that could face political retribution for voting on a bill that would have allowed doctors to provide abortions based on their “good-faith judgement.” Instead, the legislation advanced Monday allows doctors to use a “reasonable medical judgment” when determining an abortion is necessary to prevent the death of a pregnant patient or to spare her from the irreversible, severe impairment of a major bodily function. Some doctors argue that is a harsher legal standard. “This bill … [Read more...] about Tennessee House OKs narrow abortion exemption bill
