Formula 1 has stated that the Canadian Grand Prix is “not at risk” of being cancelled, with around 150 wildfires currently burning across Quebec. The smoke across the region spread as far as New York City on Thursday morning, with residents there told to wear masks because of the poor air quality and visibility believed to not even stretch across the Hudson River, which separates two sides of the city. Conditions remain dangerous across multiple areas on the East Coast in North America, but Montreal is not believed to be one of them at this time, though a change of wind direction could still affect Montreal at a later date. Following talks with F1’s Incident Management Group, Canadian Grand Prix organisers and local government officials assured Formula 1 that air quality in the area is good and the race can currently go ahead as planned. A spokesperson from Formula 1 said of the current state of the Canadian Grand Prix: “The event is not at risk, and we have been assured by … [Read more...] about F1 issues update on Canadian Grand Prix as wildfires rage across Quebec

Sebastian Vettel wins the Canadian Grand Prix · RaceFans
Sebastian Vettel claimed his third win of 2013 in the Canadian Grand Prix. Vettel held his advantage from pole position and pulled out a lead that never looked threatened despite a brush with the wall and an off-track moment at the first corner. Fernando Alonso spent the race working his way up to second, passing Lewis Hamilton in the final stint. Hamilton lost time lapping the Force India of Adrian Sutil, who was given a drive-through penalty for not moving over quickly enough. He wasn’t the only driver being frustrated by traffic. Mark Webber tangled with Giedo van der Garde at the hairpin, breaking the Red Bull’s front wing and leading to Van der Garde receiving a ten-second stop-go penalty. Nico Rosberg was the only other driver to finish on the lead lead lap as Vettel put everyone up to sixth-placed Jean-Eric Vergne a lap down. Next was Paul di Resta , who made a single pit stop on his way to seventh, a fine recovery after being eliminated in Q1 yesterday. … [Read more...] about Sebastian Vettel wins the Canadian Grand Prix · RaceFans

2013 Canadian GP review: Vettel makes amends for 2011 – F1 Fanatic
Sebastian Vettel made amends for his last-lap defeat at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve two years ago and bolstered his championship lead with his third victory of 2013. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free It wasn’t a flawless performance from Vettel – he brushed the wall on the way and ran wide at the first corner. But if he occasionally looked like throwing victory away no one ever looked like taking it off him. Vettel streaks away as Bottas goes backwards The same two drivers shared the front row as last year: Vettel ahead of Lewis Hamilton . But the opening laps were strikingly different: far from keeping Vettel in his sights, Hamilton could only look on as the Red Bull drove away in the opening laps. Behind them Valtteri Bottas fought hard to hold onto his hard-won third place from qualifying but his car was clearly unequal to the struggle. Nico Rosberg passed him off the line and Mark Webber got past in the opening corners. Bottas defended firmly … [Read more...] about 2013 Canadian GP review: Vettel makes amends for 2011 – F1 Fanatic
Canadian GP not under threat from wildfires, say F1 · RaceFans
Formula 1 expects next week’s Canadian Grand Prix to go ahead as normal despite wildfires which have affected air quality in the area. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Over 150 fires have been reported in Quebec, the province which is also home to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve where the race is due to take place. The pollution caused by the fires has led to warnings in surrounding areas where millions of people have been advised to wear face masks as a precaution against smoke inhalation. The smoke has spread far beyond Quebec to the north and south, including into the United States of America. However according to F1 the fires are around 800 kilometres from the circuit, the air quality in Montreal has already begun to improve and they have no concerns about the event going ahead. Air quality in the city fell below normal standards earlier in the week – though it was better than at some venues F1 visits – and has since improved. Canadian GP at “no risk” from Quebec wildfires, says F1
The region of Quebec in which Montreal sits is experiencing its worse fire season on record, with more than 150 blazes having been reported. Smoke from the fires has been drifting south across Canada and into the United States, with New York in particular being engulfed amid growing health concerns over the toxic air. Tens of millions of people in the US are currently under air quality alerts, with many cities covered by a murky brown haze. Citizens have been advised to restrict outdoor activities, and anti-pollution masks are being distributed in some areas. The situation has prompted worries that a change of wind direction could impact Montreal, which is due to hold the Canadian GP next weekend. However, following discussions between race organisers, local government officials and the F1 Incident Management Group this week, no concerns have emerged about the event being impacted. An F1 spokesman said on Thursday: "The event is not at risk, and we have been assured by … [Read more...] about Canadian GP at “no risk” from Quebec wildfires, says F1
Sutil’s criticises ‘inconsistent FIA’ after penalty · RaceFans
Adrian Sutil criticised the decision of the FIA stewards to hand him a drive-through penalty during the Canadian Grand Prix. Sutil was penalised for failing to respond to blue flags when he was being lapped by Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in the latter stages of the race. “Quite disappointing with the drive-though,” Sutil said afterwards. “I was just racing Raikkonen, I was trying to push on. I gave them the straight to pass me, that’s where Hamilton overtook me then with the DRS as well.” “So I thought, ‘OK’, they were one lap behind me but that’s usual in this kind of circuit. I spent many laps behind lapped cars until I got past. “It’s just so inconsistent decision all the time by the FIA. it’s something I don’t understand.” His team agreed with his view of the penalty, telling him on the radio after the race it was “harsh”. The stewards ruled Sutil had ignored blue flags from turn three to turn thirteen. Sutil’s problems began when he tangled with Valtteri … [Read more...] about Sutil’s criticises ‘inconsistent FIA’ after penalty · RaceFans
