IF YOU drive a plug-in hybrid or fully-electric Volkswagen, you may soon be taking it back to the dealer. Why? The chargers of these electric VWs have been found to contain the carcinogenic metal, cadmium. Cadmium is a highly toxic metal that is often found as a by-product of zinc production. The car chargers are said to contain 0.008 grams of the poisonous metal, which has been banned by the German Federal Transport Authority for use in vehicles. Concerns about the material leaking into the environment when a car is taken off the road (to be scrapped or recycled) are behind the ban. With production halted, Volkswagen Golf and Passat GTE, E-Golf and E-Up models are among the 124,000 cars set to be recalled. Joining them are also a selection of Porsche and Audi plug-in and electric models, which also contain quantities of cadmium. It’s hard luck for Volkswagen, which has focused on electric power following the catastrophe of the 2015 diesel emissions scandal. The company’s … [Read more...] about Cancer-causing metal found in electric Volkswagens leads to factory closure and recalls

Tata Motors is about to announce the discontinuation of it's least priced offering, the Nano. Low sales combined with the company's move to a two-platform strategy for its future models could be the reason behind this. The cost of updating the Tata Nano to meet the new crash test norms coming into effect from October 2019 would not bear fruit, considering only 3 units of the small car were sold in the country in June 2018. Tata had already begun developing a second generation Nano, codenamed the Pelican, which may be shelved, reports suggest. In 2017 as well, there were reports of the Tata Nano production being stopped, but the company had refuted the same. At the time, Tata Motors had stated that it will continue the production of its Tata Nano for some more time at its Sanand Plant. A Tata Motors spokesperson said that the Tata Nano has an "emotional connect" with the Tata Group. The Tata Nano is the brainchild of Ratan Tata. It was first revealed at the 2008 Auto Expo in New Delhi, … [Read more...] about Tata Nano may be discontinued, second-gen small car project to be set aside
The application of the old sales tax (left) on a car, versus the current goods and services tax (GST, right) The ministry of finance has just announced that Malaysia’s goods and services tax (GST), currently set at six percent, will be zero-rated come June 1, in line with the new Pakatan Harapan government’s promise to abolish the tax within 100 days of it coming to power. This was first announced in the coalition’s manifesto for the 14th general election. Unlike what was previously announced, this effective elimination of GST will not coincide with the introduction of a sales and service tax (SST), as outlined by Pakatan Harapan in its manifesto – instead, there will simply be no tax on goods and services until a new tax structure is announced later on. Items that have already been GST-exempt will remain as is. UPDATE: MoF has confirmed on May 17 that SST will be back – full story here. While the move will surely be well-received, it throws a huge … [Read more...] about GST to be set to 0% on June 1, no SST until later on – what are the implications for Malaysian car prices?
Danilo Petrucci will ride for the factory Ducati MotoGP team in 2019 after signing a one-year contract. The Italian will leave the satellite Pramac squad after four years and will fill the vacancy left by Jorge Lorenzo who will switch to Repsol Honda. Petrucci has spent six seasons in the MotoGP class since switching from the Superstock 1000 Cup, claiming six podium finishes including four second places, and the Italian has described this move as a “dream come true”, one he hopes will provide him with the platform to challenge for victories. “It goes without saying that for me, being part of the factory team is a dream come true. It’s a great honour to become an official rider for the Ducati Team, especially for someone like me who started in Ducati as a production motorcycle test rider. First of all, I would like to thank Paolo Campinoti and Francesco Guidotti, who gave me the chance four years ago to race on a Ducati for the Pramac Racing Team. Without them … [Read more...] about Petrucci Promoted to factory Ducati Team in 2019
The government has revealed that the sales and services tax (SST) will be reintroduced this year, and will be set at 10%, the same rate it was when it was replaced by the goods and services tax (GST) in April 2015, The Sun reports. This was announced by Lim Guan Eng in his first press conference as finance minister earlier today. He explained that SST will be reintroduced at the same rate as per Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto and any changes will be announced, but did not mention exactly when it will be reintroduced. “We want to replace the GST with SST as soon as possible. It will definitely be this year, but let us work it out before we give a date,” he told reporters. Last week, Tun Daim Zainuddin, head of the government’s Council of Eminent Persons said that SST can be established in two to three months. He added that the return of the SST is estimated to raise approximately RM30 billion and will mitigate the loss from GST collection. Ahead of SST’s … [Read more...] about SST to be set at 10%, no implementation date set yet

Tweet TweetYou’ve finally bought that classic BMW of your dreams but there is a hitch as Bavarian engineering could withstand the years of abuse heaped on it by the previous owner. As such, your dream classic car is more of a project than something which is ready to win first place at your local car show. This brings up a challenge. How can you find the parts you need to restore your Beemer to factory condition? Well, here are some suggestions on the best ways to get parts for your classic BMW. You Can’t Walk into the Dealer Well, in some cases you might be able to but odds are that any dealer specializing in parts for classic BMWs is going to be insanely expensive. While this might seem like the easiest option, you probably don’t want to go broke restoring your dream car. After all, you already need to hide the bills from your wife. Another reason you can’t walk into the dealer is that they probably won’t have the parts you need anyways. This is because … [Read more...] about The Best Ways to Get Parts for Your Classic BMW
In an era long before women were thought capable of doing much of anything, Dorothy Levitt decided that she wanted to do it all. Avid horseback rider, self-styled motoriste, race car driver, boat racer, journalist and amateur aviator, Levitt was a woman well before her era and, at the same time, exactly what Edwardian Britain needed. Dorothy Levitt was born Elizabeth Levi in Hackney, London in 1882, and she had the taste for speed on her tongue right from the start. Her early life isn’t really well-known, but she often fell back on her experience as a horse rider to describe her racing life. “It is far harder work to sit in a car than to ride a galloping horse over the jumps in a steeplechase,” she said in a 1906 edition of the Penny Illustrated Paper. She had been employed as a secretary at Napier & Sons, a British engineering company that produced luxury cars and aero engines. Through her connections there, she met Selwyn Edge, who drove Napier cars in … [Read more...] about The Woman Who Taught Queens To Drive Set The Fastest Women’s Speed Record
It spent a few months last year trying to find a ‘suitable’ investor, but could not find one. With the rising cost of land and capital, no investor with an automobile background came forward to invest. The search is still on. “There is no such challenge of finding the partners for Maruti Suzuki. This (Lucknow) may be a one-off,” said a company spokesperson, in response to queries. This may be a one-off for the company, whose dealer partners are better off (compared to most other companies) and enjoy the edge of being associated with the most sold brand in the country. But challenges are beginning to emerge in finding dealer partners because investors have multiple avenues to park their money outside the automobile business. “A new dealer in Lucknow may have had to invest Rs 150 million in setting up a Maruti Suzuki sales, service, and spares network. This excludes the cost of land. Adequate returns could have been tough,” said a person … [Read more...] about Almost 4,000 new car sales service outlets expected to be set up by 2020
