Gasly: Mindset for Alpine is “completely different” to Red Bull F1 move
Listen to this article Gasly joined Alpine for 2023 after spending the bulk of his career with Red Bull's sister team, AlphaTauri , and its predecessor, Toro Rosso, making his debut for the latter in 2017. Gasly was promoted to Red Bull's senior team in 2019 as Daniel Ricciardo's replacement, only to return to Toro Rosso 12 races later in a straight swap with Alex Albon during the summer break after struggling for form. In an end-of-season interview with Motorsport.com, Gasly explained how he thought the lessons taken from his failed move up the grid to Red Bull would help ensure his time with Alpine was a success. "It feels like it was an eternity ago that I was with Red Bull, and since then, so much has happened, professionally and personally," Gasly said. "I really feel like I've developed in all areas. I remember when I came in Red Bull, the feeling that I had going there, and now the feeling, my approach and mindset that I have going into Alpine, is … [Read more...] about Gasly: Mindset for Alpine is “completely different” to Red Bull F1 move
Red Bull F1 car spotted on iconic Aussie road
Listen to this article Several clips of a V8-powered Red Bull RB7 cruising along the coastal road have surfaced on social media in the past day. The Sea Cliff Bridge run is believed to be part of a promotional video shoot that will conclude at this weekend's Bathurst 12 Hour. There has been speculation regarding filming of the RB7 in and around Aussie landmarks in recent weeks, including a rumour that Red Bull even considered running the car across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. While it's unclear if the car has been filmed elsewhere it has certainly been spotted on the Sea Cliff Bridge, which is part of the Grand Pacific Drive near Wollongong in NSW. The car is set to lap the Mount Panorama circuit with Liam Lawson at the wheel this Saturday in between the two qualifying sessions for the Bathurst 12 Hour . That demonstration run could see the unofficial Bathurst lap record fall for the first time since 2011, when Jenson Button lapped the famous track in 1m148.8s in a … [Read more...] about Red Bull F1 car spotted on iconic Aussie road
Will teams welcome Domenicali as F1 boss? Seven Russian GP talking points · RaceFans
Formula 1 heads to Sochi for the 10th round of the world championship this weekend following yesterday’s news that the sport will soon have a new CEO. Can Domenicali expect a warm return? Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free As RaceFans revealed yesterday evening, Stefano Domenicali is to return to Formula 1 as CEO in place of Chase Carey . He’s well-known and well-liked, but will Ferrari’s rivals have concerns over another former figure from the team taking a senior position in the sport? After all, last year Ferrari said it opposed the potential appointment of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to the same position. However Wolff was still in charge of Mercedes at the time, whereas Domenicali stood down at Ferrari six years ago. Will Sochi produce another procession? Of course the expectation was also that Mugello would not produce an exciting race. But with two red flags, two standing restarts and more overtaking than was predicted, a lively … [Read more...] about Will teams welcome Domenicali as F1 boss? Just Stop Oil protesters risked ‘serious harm’ to F1 drivers, court told
A group of protesters who broke onto the Silverstone track posed a risk of “serious harm” to F1 drivers and marshals, a court has been told. Five protesters invaded the track during the opening lap of the 2022 British Grand Prix and sat on the Wellington Straight as the cars went by. The event was largely overshadowed by Zhou Guanyu’s dramatic crash on the first corner but could have been much worse had the cars not been travelling at red flag speeds. On approach, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was heard saying on the radio “what are these guys doing? Look at these spectators coming onto the track.” The five protestors, two women and three men, sat down on the track just as the AlphaTauri of Yuki Tsunoda passed by. They were then dragged off the circuit by marshals as Esteban Ocon drove past. The on-board footage of both drivers was shown to a jury at Northampton Crown Court during the prosecution’s opening speech, as was Lewis Hamilton’s who passed by shortly before the protestors … [Read more...] about Just Stop Oil protesters risked ‘serious harm’ to F1 drivers, court told
FIA president reminds F1 bosses: ‘The championship is ours, we have only rented it out’
As tensions continue to mount in the on-going war-of-words between the FIA and Formula 1, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has reminded F1 bosses “the championship is ours and we have only rented it out.” The Formula 1 World Championship has, to some degree, two bosses, or to use Otmar Szafnauer’s turn of phrase, “two popes”. They are the FIA, motorsport’s governing body, and Liberty Media, who own the series’ rights having bought a controlling interest in the Formula One Group in early 2017. While the FIA’s mandate is to ensure safety and enforce the rules, the Formula One Group is in charge of all commercial affairs. But right now the two parties are at loggerheads over just about everything to do with the sport. PlanetF1 recommends Forget Red Bull v Mercedes v Ferrari, another battle looks set to dominate in F1 2023 Who is Mohammed Ben Sulayem? Everything you need to know about the FIA president F1 entry fee: Why do new teams have to pay a whopping $200m fee to … [Read more...] about FIA president reminds F1 bosses: ‘The championship is ours, we have only rented it out’
End of Red Bull v Mercedes v Ferrari ‘spending war’ was a ‘game-changer’ for F1
Mercedes’ Toto Wolff has praised the cost cap introduced into the world of Formula 1 as it “protected us from ourselves.” Formula 1 underwent an historic change in 2021 when it introduced a cost cap for the first time ever in the sport’s 71-year history. The goal of the cap was to create a more competitive sport by not allowing the bigger teams to simply outspend the smaller ones on the grid. The cap was initially introduced at $175 million in a pre-pandemic world but was reduced to $145 million for 2021. In 2022, the cap was set at $140 million with an expectation for it to be set at a higher level for 2023 due to the increased number of sprint races. While the changes failed to produce the kind of sweeping change in the establishment that some fans may have been hoping for – Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes finished in the top three – there have been rare moments of success from the smaller outfits such as Haas’ pole position in Sao Paulo. Another added benefit was it … [Read more...] about End of Red Bull v Mercedes v Ferrari ‘spending war’ was a ‘game-changer’ for F1
Indygate remembered, 15 years since F1’s six-car fiasco · RaceFans
Exactly 15 years on, I recall the scene clearly. Ron Dennis, then McLaren’s head honcho, heading stone-faced down the US Grand Prix grid, stopping one by one beside selected peers – six in total – as he twirled an upward-pointed index finger in a single circle before mock-slicing his throat with said digit. Significantly, Dennis did not acknowledge Jean Todt, then Ferrari’s team boss, tending his top car, placed fifth on the grid. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Each of Ron’s respondents nodded silently in return, faces set grimly as their eyes locked with Ron’s, the gesture clearly having been pre-arranged, and the unsaid implication crystal clear to each of the team bosses. Tellingly, they all sported a Michelin logo on their team gear. As my gaze followed him down the grid it dawned on me that this sign language spelt disaster for F1; that the single finger meant ‘one’; the circling mimed a lap, with the throat ‘cut’ being F1-speak for ‘kill engine’. My … [Read more...] about Indygate remembered, 15 years since F1’s six-car fiasco · RaceFans
Mark Webber’s warns rivals about F1’s ‘most dangerous team coming out of the blocks’
Mark Webber has warned Mercedes and Ferrari they need to “lift their games in all aspects” if they want to challenge Red Bull, the Aussie doubting Red Bull’s budget cap penalty will have a massive impact on the reigning World Champions. Last season Red Bull romped to their first championship double since 2013 when Webber finished third in the Drivers’ standings to his team-mate Sebastian Vettel’s P1, the duo handing Red Bull the two championship titles. With Max Verstappen leading the charge, taking 15 of 22 race wins in a season in which he seldom put a wheel wrong, Red Bull were back on top of both standings. Based on last year’s form there is nothing to suggest Red Bull won’t put in another strong season this year, the Milton Keynes squad chasing a third successive Drivers’ title with Verstappen. “Red Bull are still the most dangerous team coming out of the blocks,” Webber told Autosport . PlanetF1 recommends Mark Webber: ‘F1 drivers saying they sacrifice to be in … [Read more...] about Mark Webber’s warns rivals about F1’s ‘most dangerous team coming out of the blocks’
