Red Bull have taken steps to address AlphaTauri’s financial underperformance after signing Lars Stegelmann to a new Head of Commercial role. The AlphaTauri team is going through one of the toughest spells in its existence right now, that also including the days under its past identity of Toro Rosso. AlphaTauri slipped to P9 in the 2022 Constructors’ Championship with just 35 points scored, comfortably their poorest tally and finishing position since the rebrand, and the situation remains alarming at the start of F1 2023. Two rounds into the new season and AlphaTauri are yet to score a point, a pair of P11 finishes for Yuki Tsunoda their best results, while both cars were eliminated in Q1 at the most recent outing, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Red Bull and AlphaTauri advisor Helmut Marko has said that AlphaTauri are not meeting expectations on the track, though rather worryingly revealed recently that the team is also underperforming financially as well. Nonetheless, Marko … [Read more...] about Red Bull take step to improve AlphaTauri’s fortunes with arrival of new Head of Commercial

How commercial success has fuelled Aston Martin’s on-track F1 speed
Listen to this article However, in one area the Silverstone team has already been operating at a high level and attracting envious glances from the competition. In commercial terms, Aston Martin has been a consistently strong performer as the number of brand names on the car attests. The team has not one but two title sponsors in Cognizant and Aramco – or three if you count the financial contribution made by the sister road car company – but that's just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, the team is now generating around eight times the sponsorship income that it did in 2020, the last year it ran as Racing Point. That's an impressive effort by any standards, and it says a lot about the appeal of the Aston Martin name. Identity has always been an issue for Team Silverstone. There was a time in the Jordan days when it had an outlaw image that appealed to the likes of Benson and Hedges, and savvy commercial boss Ian Phillips had a Midas touch when it came to bringing in … [Read more...] about How commercial success has fuelled Aston Martin’s on-track F1 speed
How the FIA’s Alonso Saudi Arabian GP penalty U-turn played out
Listen to this article This is the full breakdown of the key moments in that timeline: from Alonso lining up in second place to gaining, losing and then finally, and officially, regaining his 100th F1 podium. Alonso commits his crime, but does he do the time? 20:03 – Alonso completes the formation lap and lines up second alongside the Red Bull of polesitter Sergio Perez . But when he comes to a stop on the grid, the front-left tyre is outside the painted box. 20:04 – The stewards note the two-time F1 champion’s AMR23 for an incorrect starting location. 20:05 – Alonso is accordingly placed under investigation for the startline procedure infringement. 20:06 – The Spaniard is handed a five-second penalty for an incorrect starting location. He would say of his indiscretion: “Maybe this is the cars or the halo - whatever it is interacting with the vision of how we position the car. But anyway, that was my mistake.” 20:30 – An energy recovery issue for … [Read more...] about How the FIA’s Alonso Saudi Arabian GP penalty U-turn played out
Why Saudi Arabia is not put off by its F1 critics
Listen to this article As Jeddah pulled off its third grand prix in just 16 months last weekend, it indeed faced further scrutiny about whether or not it was right of F1 to be hosting a race there. On the eve of the event taking place, human rights group Reprieve issued a strongly worded statement regarding the situation inside Saudi Arabia. Maya Foa, Director of Reprieve, said: "For all the talk of 'positive values' and 'accelerating change,' F1 has never seriously engaged with human rights and the way the sport is used to whitewash abuses by some of the world's most repressive regimes." She added: "There have been at least 13 executions in Saudi Arabia in the last two weeks, including Hussein Abo al-Kheir, a Jordanian father of eight whose case had been raised by UN experts and UK MPs. "Carrying out these executions on the eve of the Jeddah Grand Prix is a brazen display of impunity by the Saudi authorities, confident that the sport and its commercial partners will … [Read more...] about Why Saudi Arabia is not put off by its F1 critics
Why the numbers are stacked against more women reaching F1 · RaceFans
Last year the FIA appointed Carmen Jorda, a supporter of separate championships for men and women, to its Women in Motorsport Commission. Her controversial views rignited the debate over equality in motor racing. The fact very few women have reached the top of motor racing has been taken by some as proof they don’t belong there. More enlightened views are beginning to be heard, but as @DieterRencken explains the sheer weight of numbers means it could be years before we see more women in the top flight. How women participate in motorsport is a delicate yet recurring theme which affects the sport far beyond just Formula 1. Should they be restricted to their own categories as per most physical sports? Or, reflecting the trend in most aspects of modern society, should they be treated as equals and be permitted to compete against men in open competition? There is a third option, one pursued by arguably the least physical but most cerebral of sports, namely chess. Here there is a … [Read more...] about Why the numbers are stacked against more women reaching F1 · RaceFans

Wolff fully committed to seeing team back to front of F1 grid
Listen to this article The German manufacturer has had a difficult start to the 2023 campaign, with the new W14 proving to be well adrift of the pace-setting Red Bull car. The competitive situation has prompted Mercedes to work on a complete revamp of its design concept, which it hopes can deliver big steps forward in pace over the remainder of the season. Wolff has long talked about the management challenges that come when a dominant team faces more challenging moments and has studied deeply what has happened in other sports like football. Equally, he is also well aware of the need for managers and bosses to know when is the right time for them to hand over to others for the good of the organisation. But having stayed in place amid Mercedes' dominant era, he has made it clear that he does not believe the current situation at the squad is enough for him to feel it is time to step aside. "Whether it is good or bad, I really enjoy being the team principal of the … [Read more...] about Wolff fully committed to seeing team back to front of F1 grid

Verstappen says Alonso deserves his long-awaited 33rd win – and more · RaceFans
Fernando Alonso deserves more wins than he’s had so far in his career, says championship leader Max Verstappen, who would like to see him take more. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Verstappen surpassed Alonso’s total of 32 career wins last year. His fellow two-times world champion is approaching the 10th anniversary of his last win in F1, which came at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2013. However Alonso’s two podium finishes from the opening races of 2023 have fuelled expectations he may finally take his 33rd victory. If he does, Verstappen says it will be entirely deserved. “I think Fernando should have won anyway already a lot more races than what he has done,” said Verstappen. “I think he deserves a lot more. “I would be quite happy to see him win number 33. But I also, in a way, also I would like to see him win more.
