Akkaradej offers censure ammunition
Akkaradej Wongpitakroj, a Democrat MP for Ratchaburi, said he is ready to supply information to the opposition if it wants to target Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow over runaway fuel prices in the upcoming no-confidence debate. Mr Akkaradej earlier urged opposition lawmakers to use the debate to grill Mr Supattanapong over the crisis. He said several coalition MPs were unhappy with the government's handling of the issue and hoped the opposition would consider adding the minister to its list of targets. "I have information ready to give if the opposition wants to use it as material for censuring [the minister]," Mr Akkaradej said. His actions drew criticism from Sayan Yuttitham, a ruling Palang Pracharath Party MP for Nakhon Si Thammarat. Mr Sayan said that since the Democrat Party is part of the coalition government, it was wrong for one of its MPs to suggest the opposition add the minister to the list of censure targets. "This is a breach of … [Read more...] about Akkaradej offers censure ammunition

Plan for food, energy in the works
The government expects to have a plan ready by next Friday to safeguard the country's food and energy security due to threats posed by the economic impact of Covid-19 coupled with the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the National Security Council (NSC) said yesterday. NSC secretary-general Supoj Malaniyom has been asked by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to take charge of brainstorming efforts to find ways of better mitigating the impact of these crises. They have been driving up inflation and consumer product and energy prices, which are being handled by the government's economic organisations, he said. "What Gen Prayut is more concerned about, however, is the long-term impact of these negative factors on Thailand's food and energy security," added Gen Supoj. Input received from previous meetings with those economic organisations is being compiled and turned into a plan to be implemented in various stages, he noted. In the short term, the plan will focus on inflation and the risk of … [Read more...] about Plan for food, energy in the works
Abortion ruling to test Biden’s political, policy plans
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 WASHINGTON (AP) — For weeks, White House officials have been huddling with state leaders, advocates, health care professionals and others to prepare for a future without Roe v. Wade. That future arrived on Friday, when the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark decision that legalized abortion nationwide. Now President Joe Biden's plans will be tested in terms of politics and policy. He's expected to address the nation from the White House in remarks that will outline his approach to this new phase. Biden and other Democrats hope to use outrage over the court decision to rally voters in November's midterm elections. Although nationwide legislation ensuring access to abortion appears out of reach, more Democratic victories at the state level could limit Republican efforts to ban the practice. The White House has also … [Read more...] about Abortion ruling to test Biden’s political, policy plans
Abortion ruling exposes deep chasm over the issue in the US
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 America was convulsed with anger, joy, fear and confusion Friday after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The canyon-like divide across the U.S. over the right to terminate a pregnancy was on full display, with abortion rights supporters calling it a dark day in history, while abortion foes welcomed the ruling as the answer to their prayers. In eliminating the constitutional right to abortion that has stood for a half-century, the high court left the politically charged issue up to the states, about half of which are now likely to ban the procedure. Some states, such as Oklahoma and Louisiana, had bans already on the books that automatically went into effect when Roe fell. Hundreds of people surrounded the barricaded Supreme Court in Washington, some questioning the high court's legitimacy, while others cheered the ruling and proclaimed the dawn of a … [Read more...] about Abortion ruling exposes deep chasm over the issue in the US
Bill Maher Addressed an Eventful Political Week on “Real Time”
Friday’s Real Time With Bill Maher was the last episode to air before the show takes a month-long break. (It’ll return on July 29.) Given the week’s Supreme Court decisions, Maher and his guests had no shortage of topics to choose from — but the overall effect was more understated than one might expect. Maher addressed the way that the aforementioned legal rulings represented a break from the status quo many Americans had thought would never change. From there, he spoke about considering returning to his running “I know why you’re happy” gag, but commented that it wasn’t the week for it. “If you’re keeping score at home, it’s Guns 1, Women 0,” he said. And from there, Maher talked about Trump’s influence lingering after he left office. “He’s like a fart with bad hair,” said Maher. Maher went on to discuss Clarence Thomas’s concurring opinion and the continuing revelations from the January 6 hearings. Perhaps the most charged moment happened when Maher alluded to the testimony … [Read more...] about Bill Maher Addressed an Eventful Political Week on “Real Time”
