“Loud, obnoxious, rowdy cars are inherently fun,” Tony Angelo tells me. “Doesn’t matter what it is. Doesn’t matter what year it was made. It doesn’t matter if it’s fuel injected or carbureted.” Tony says this standing next to his two most beloved cars, his numbers-matching 340 Dodge Demon he’s had since he was in high school, and the 700 horsepower Scion FR-S he used to compete in Formula Drift. One is a classic muscle car. The other is a top-of-the-world drift car. He calls them both his hot rods, and he’s right to do so. At first glance there is little in common between hot rodding and drifting. One looks old, the other looks young. One looks like it plays heavily on tradition, while the other doesn’t seem interested. But spend time in the two cultures and you see that they’re both filled with homebuilt cars tuned to destruction, packing dive bars and barbecues with tattoo’d punks, acting as havens for the … [Read more...] about Drifters Are The New Hot Rodders
Dan Gelston Associated Press Published 4:38 p.m. UTC Jun 4, 2018 Long Pond, Pa. — Martin Truex Jr. had his car parked on the White House lawn and was feted with a day in his honor in his home state of New Jersey. Nearly seven months after winning his first NASCAR Cup championship, Truex’s whirlwind victory tour remains on a barnstorming schedule. “It just kind of reminded us of how big a deal it is to win a championship in this sport,” Truex said. Lost in the shuffle in a season where Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch have turned the Cup Series into a two-driver show, Truex came to Pocono and gave the field a reminder that he’s still a driver to beat in the championship race. Truex stayed out on pivotal caution late in the race to take the lead, then pulled away off a restart with seven laps left to win Sunday at Pocono Raceway and thrust himself into title contention. “Just happy today that things kind of went our way a little bit for once,” … [Read more...] about Truex zips away on final restart to win at Pocono Raceway
Without anyone noticing, Formula Drift cars became quite possibly the most powerful racers of their kind in any competition anywhere in the world. How do I know this? Because I drove Tony Angelo's 705 wheel horsepower Scion FR-S… and crashed it. I crashed an FD car. Photo Credit: Raphael Orlove Well, that's not what's surprising. I had never driven any drift car of any kind before Tony Angelo put me in the seat of his competition car, a 705-horsepower, nitrous-shot Scion FR-S. It was a wet December afternoon at New Jersey's Englishtown Raceway Park. Everyone who knew anything about drifting (Tony included, as he later told me) took one look at me, the car, and the conditions and knew that I was going to go off track. That I went off wasn't a shock to anyone. What was a shock was that I drove the car at all. Nobody drives Formula Drift cars outside of the handful of guys who compete in the series. Until Saturday afternoon, the only person to put their foot down in Tony Angelo's … [Read more...] about How Formula Drift Secretly Built The World’s Most Powerful Road Racecars
