Valtteri Bottas admits his five seasons trying to beat Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes were ‘exhausting’
Valtteri Bottas has revealed it was only in his last season as Lewis Hamilton’s team-mate that he accepted the Briton was the “better driver”. Bottas joined Mercedes in 2017, promoted up the order after the shock retirement of Hamilton’s championship-winning team-mate Nico Rosberg. The German called time on his career after beating Hamilton to the 2016 title in what was a ferocious and vicious battle, saying he didn’t have the energy to do it all again. Bottas went into his time at Mercedes believing he too could fight Hamilton for the Drivers’ titles. But even with the arrival of ‘Bottas 2.0’, 3.0 and so on, he was at the end of the day the “sensational wingman” as his team-mate wrapped up one title after another. It was, Bottas admits, an “exhausting” time. Gerhard Berger: Nyck de Vries almost ‘burned’ by missing out on F1 chance
Gerhard Berger “always believed” Nyck de Vries would have gone straight from winning the Formula 2 title onto the Formula 1 grid, conceding he would have “lost” that bet. This season De Vries will complete his fairytale arrival onto the Formula 1 grid, the Dutchman having taken the long way around. Winning the Formula 2 title in 2019, he headed to Formula E after failing to find a spot in motor racing’s premier league. But, having joined the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team, he kept one foot in the Formula 1 door as he also joined the roster of the Mercedes’ F1 reserve drivers. That meant the 2020/21 Formula E champion was already at Monza when Williams driver Alex Albon fell ill with appendicitis. Williams, powered by Mercedes, drafted in De Vries as the Thai driver’s replacement, the Dutchman scoring two points as he raced his way to ninth place. That put in the spotlight with the driver subsequently linked to several teams, including Williams. It was, however, Helmut … [Read more...] about Gerhard Berger: Nyck de Vries almost ‘burned’ by missing out on F1 chance
Boiling Crab
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 A certain fortitude is required to dine at the Boiling Crab during crawfish season. By 6 p.m. — early for dinner in Houston — a line will have clotted the foyer and spilled onto the front sidewalk. “It will be 45 minutes,” a harried waitress may tell you as she inscribes your name in a crumpled notebook. That’s a short wait at this wildly popular restaurant fronting the Viet Hoa shopping plaza, which dominates the intersection of Beechnut and Beltway 8 near Houston’s new Chinatown. As the evening darkens, knots of cars snarl the parking lot and a vexed security guard directs rapper Chamillionaire’s custom pickup truck into a tight space. Curb-sitters step out for sodas; a few procure beers to sip in the car. In the entryway, kids peck at handheld video games while the grown-ups talk into cell phones, everybody breathing deeply of the garlic-and-brine aroma gusting from the … [Read more...] about Boiling Crab
