Mothers hovered over crying children. Amid the chaos, one man sat with a dazed expression, his face covered with abrasions. The man, Osama Abdul Hamid, had barely made it out alive with his wife and four children from his apartment building in the nearby village of Azmarin. Many of their neighbors were not so lucky. “The building is four stories, and from three of them, no one made it out,” Abdul Hamid said, breaking down in tears. “God gave me a new lease on life.” At an equally overwhelmed hospital in Idlib city, Shajul Islam, a British doctor working with the non-governmental organization Medical Aid Syria, was having the worst day in his seven … [Read more...] about Deadly earthquake exacerbates suffering of displaced Syrians

Championing health: Why a football legend is talking about pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination
(BPT) - Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana has been vocal about the importance of getting vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia — a potentially serious bacterial lung disease that can disrupt your life for weeks and, in severe cases, put you in the hospital and even be life-threatening. He thinks about it like how he would prepare for games, so here are his top tips for protecting your own health: 1. Preparation is key — on or off the field. Like anyone else 65 or older, Joe is at increased risk for pneumococcal pneumonia — but he knows that getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to help defend his health. And helping protect himself against pneumococcal pneumonia is a lot like preparing for a big game. For his gameday preparation, he always reviewed the playbook and watched game film so he could handle whatever was thrown at him. Now, he stays prepared by prioritizing his health — which is why he got vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia. 2. Book World: Thomas Mallon’s ‘Up With the Sun’ is a keen portrait of 1980 New York
By Thomas Mallon Knopf. 352 pp. $28 - - - Hollywood history is filled with has-beens and never-weres, so you're forgiven if you don't remember Dick Kallman, a small-time Broadway player turned television actor whose career reached its fleeting apogee when he starred in a 1965 sitcom called "Hank." After that show's cancellation the following year, Kallman didn't make another headline until 1980, when - having retired from show business and refashioned himself into a successful antiques dealer - he and his partner were brutally murdered in their Manhattan apartment in a robbery gone wrong. That this lurid episode chalks off the center of Thomas Mallon's engrossing new novel, "Up With the Sun," may seem peculiar at first, given the deftness with which Mallon has woven minor characters into the grand fabric of history dating back to 1994's "Henry and Clara." That novel, which set a tale of star-crossed lovers against the backdrop of Abraham Lincoln's assassination, was followed … [Read more...] about Book World: Thomas Mallon’s ‘Up With the Sun’ is a keen portrait of 1980 New York

Why access, education and support are vital to close the gender gap in tech careers
(BPT) - While women make up approximately half of the U.S. workforce, they are underrepresented in the technology sector, making up 28% of the industry . These numbers are even lower for women of color seeking opportunities in the field, with 3% of computing-related jobs being filled by African American women, 6% by Asian women and 2% by Hispanic women. Over the course of February and March, Black History Month and Women’s History Month respectively, conversations often focus on empowering diverse voices to ensure they are represented in society. While these conversations raise awareness, they may not result in action and shifting the narrative surrounding diverse hiring practices. Diversity becomes a guide for program development to ensure diverse and female students feel supported in their pursuit of tech-related jobs, helping to address the gender gap in the industry. To address the gender and diversity disparities, women must have access to resources and learning … [Read more...] about Why access, education and support are vital to close the gender gap in tech careers

Actress Viola Davis is now a member of perhaps the most exclusive clubs in Hollywood: EGOT winners. The 57-year-old actress earned the coveted designation - gained by winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony - at the 65th Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony on Sunday when she took home her Grammy, the last piece of the puzzle, for performance of an audiobook. Horner: F1 drivers shouldn’t be “robots” amid ban on political statements
Listen to this article For this year, the International Sporting Code contains a clause noting that “the general making and display of political, religious and personal statements or comments notably in violation of the general principle of neutrality promoted by the FIA under its statutes” would be a breach of the rules, with the added proviso of “unless previously approved in writing by the FIA for international competitions.” As the move happened during the winter break , few F1 drivers have commented in public on the matter so far. However, Horner has made it clear that he would prefer to allow drivers to speak up if they wish to do so. “Well, there's a couple of ways of looking at this,” he said when asked for his views on the restrictions. “I think, first of all, sports should never be used as a political tool. And I think that sport, in many ways, is there to obviously entertain, but to also have an element of escapism within it. “But certainly we at Red … [Read more...] about Horner: F1 drivers shouldn’t be “robots” amid ban on political statements
Gulf Oil provide fresh hope for future Williams FW45 livery takeover
While Gulf Oil did not feature as prominently as perhaps expected on the Williams FW45 livery, there are plans in the works on something more substantial. After Gulf Oil and McLaren went their separate ways following the 2022 Formula 1 season, it was not long before rumours emerged about Gulf potentially returning to another old friend in the form of Williams. And that reunion was indeed confirmed as Williams took the covers off to reveal the livery of their F1 2023 challenger, the FW45. However, the Gulf branding and colours perhaps were not as prominent as many had expected, with the FW45 livery more an evolution of the FW44 design, rather than what we saw at McLaren as the wildly-popular 2021 Monaco GP Gulf livery served as inspiration for McLaren’s 2022 design. But Mike Jones, CEO of Gulf Oil International, revealed that the brand is very much open to repeating that one-off livery takeover in this new Williams partnership. Asked by Motorsport.com whether a full … [Read more...] about Gulf Oil provide fresh hope for future Williams FW45 livery takeover
