NEW YORK (AP) — The Brad Pitt action film “Bullet Train” led all movies in ticket sales for a second straight weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, while a quiet spell in theaters and incredible staying power allowed “Top Gun: Maverick” to rocket back into third place in its 12th week of release. After launching the previous weekend with about $30 million at the box office, “Bullet Train” pulled in $13.4 million in its second go-around. David Leitch's assassin-crowded film, made for $90 million, has grossed $54.4 million in two weeks for Sony Pictures. Globally, “Bullet Train” has grossed $114.5 million. Three new films went into wide release but none cracked the top five films. The slowdown — an expected but still acute late-summer downturn in big releases — gave plenty of airspace for the year's biggest movie, “Maverick,” to make another fly-by in theaters. Nearly three months after opening in May, Paramount Pictures put the “Top Gun” sequel back on a number of … [Read more...] about ‘Bullet Train’ repeats No. 1; ‘Top Gun’ flies back up ranks

A progressive prosecutor clashed with DeSantis – now he’s out of a job
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 TAMPA, Fla. - State Attorney Andrew Warren was waiting for a grand jury to issue indictments in two rape and murder cases he had been working on for three years when he glanced down at his phone and saw an email from an attorney for Gov. Ron DeSantis. It said he was suspended from his job. Stunned, Warren quickly went to his office to consult with his staff. Not long after, there was a knock at the door. An armed major from the county sheriff's office and a man in a suit from the governor's office carrying a copy of DeSantis' executive order suspending him were looking for him. "He said, essentially, 'The governor has suspended you and you need to leave the office now,'" Warren, a Democrat, recalled of DeSantis' aide. "So within maybe seven minutes from getting the email, I was outside, on the street. The major offered me a ride home because they … [Read more...] about A progressive prosecutor clashed with DeSantis – now he’s out of a job
Max Verstappen happy to see Mercedes ‘steal points’ from Ferrari
Max Verstappen believes Mercedes might be able to help his bid for a second title, by stealing points away from Ferrari. The reigning World Champion’s lead in the 2022 title chase increased at the Hungarian Grand Prix, extending to 80 points between himself and the pursuing Charles Leclerc. This was after Leclerc fell down to sixth place due to how competitive Mercedes were in Budapest, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell coming home in second and third place respectively. While Ferrari and Red Bull have had the top positions largely to themselves this year, Mercedes have been making steady progress with their W13 and appear, on occasion, to be able to get themselves in the mix near the front – a situation Verstappen is welcoming as Ferrari continue to make mistakes and lose out to Red Bull. Mercedes ‘finding more consistency’ as 2022 progresses “No, it’s good that they are competitive,” Verstappen told media after the Hungarian Grand Prix, when asked if he was … [Read more...] about Max Verstappen happy to see Mercedes ‘steal points’ from Ferrari
Ricciardo says ‘no thank you’ to the Nordschleife
There’s no doubt that the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife is an icon of motor racing, but Daniel Ricciardo has no intention of competing on it. Nicknamed “The Green Hell” by Sir Jackie Stewart, the infamous Nordschleife circuit hosted various German GPs throughout the history of Formula 1 between 1950-1976. It was ultimately dropped from the calendar due to safety concerns, though the current 12.93-mile Nordschleife track, consisting of 154 turns, remains arguably the most famous circuit in the world. While it’s regularly used for endurance racing such as the 24 hours of the Nürburgring, which combines the Grand Prix circuit and the Nordschleife, the track is also used regularly for car testing and promotional content. And Ricciardo got the chance to sample it in a Renault Megane RS at the Eifel Grand Prix during the filming of a team movie. And it’s safe to say Ricciardo won’t be signing himself up for the 24 hours of the Nürburgring any time soon. “I’m a bit shocked, … [Read more...] about Ricciardo says ‘no thank you’ to the Nordschleife
Romanian swimmer, 17, breaks 100-meter men’s freestyle record
One of swimming's oldest records toppled Saturday courtesy of one of its youngest stars, as 17-year-old Romanian swimmer David Popovici bested César Cielo's 13-year-old 100-meter men's freestyle mark at the European Aquatics Championship in Rome. Popovici's time of 46.86 eclipsed the former event record by 0.05 seconds, and he beat Saturday's second-fastest competitor, Kristóf Milák, by 0.61. "It felt great, and it's very special to break this record which was set here in 2009 by César Cielo," Popovici said via the Associated Press. Though announcers declared Popovici the odds-on favorite entering Saturday's final, his win hardly appeared inevitable at the halfway mark of the race, as he trailed France's Maxime Grousset with 50 meters remaining. Popovici ultimately pulled ahead with a second-half surge, measured at a 24.12 split. Cielo, the previous record-holder, complimented Popovici's performance on Twitter, declaring that Popovici is "just getting started." Few swimmers … [Read more...] about Romanian swimmer, 17, breaks 100-meter men’s freestyle record
Offense comes up blank as Nats lose series in Juan Soto’s return
Manager Dave Martinez looked to Keibert Ruiz with one out in the seventh inning to provide a jolt to an offense that hadn't had much energy. At that stage of the game, the Washington Nationals hadn't scored and had only four hits. They had left two runners on base, but here was a spot for Ruiz to come through with another pair on. Ruiz fell behind in the count 0-2, then swung at a low curveball and hit a groundball toward Padres second baseman Brandon Drury. Fans at Nationals Park groaned as the ball went into his glove, then was quickly flipped to shortstop Jake Cronenworth, who fired a strike to former Nationals first baseman Josh Bell to end the frame. It was the Nationals' league-worst 110th double play; they grounded into another in the eighth inning in a 6-0 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Since the start of July, Washington has won just one series. "Some days, you got to tip your hat off to their pitchers," Martinez said. "[Starter Blake] Snell was good. Mystics close regular season with win, but Natasha Cloud hurts knee
WASHINGTON - Natasha Cloud writhed on the floor under the basket while teammates gathered around her Sunday and Entertainment and Sports Arena fell silent. The Mystics' leader and longest-tenured player would eventually get up and shoot a pair of free throws before checking out for the rest of the game. She limped to the locker room and never returned to the bench. The starting point guard was officially ruled out with a knee injury, but the team was adamant that holding her out was precautionary. The Washington Mystics had nothing to play for in their regular season finale - a 95-83 victory over the Indiana Fever - as they already had the No. 5 playoff seed locked up and will face the No. 4 Storm in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday in Seattle. Coach Mike Thibault, however, committed to playing his starters significant minutes Sunday. Washington closed the season with its second straight win, both against the league-worst Fever. "Psychologically, I think it's good … [Read more...] about Mystics close regular season with win, but Natasha Cloud hurts knee
Anne Heche’s family and friends share their love, sorrow at her death
Anne Heche died Sunday evening after being taken off life support, but an outpouring of appreciation for the 53-year-old actress had already been building for days, beginning with the Aug. 5 car crash in Los Angeles that left her hospitalized. It continued all weekend after Thursday's news that Heche had been declared brain dead and her family issued a statement mourning their loss. "We have lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend," her family wrote in a statement. "Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work and her passionate advocacy. Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact." "After six days of unbelievable emotional swings, I am left with a deep, wordless sadness," Homer Laffoon, 20, one of Heche's two sons, wrote in a statement, issued on Friday. "Hopefully my mom is free from pain and … [Read more...] about Anne Heche’s family and friends share their love, sorrow at her death
To save their home, an Indigenous community turns to the skies
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 For centuries, the Philippine eagle and hawk eagle have shared this remote rainforest with the Dumagat, an Indigenous people who call the slopes of the Sierra Madre mountains in the northern Philippines their home. Together, they survived Spanish colonialism and American imperialism and the impinging development of the modern Philippines. But in recent years the raptors have become perilously scarce. Fewer than 600 mature Philippine hawk eagles are left in the wild, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Red List, which considers the bird to be endangered. The Dumagat also fear that their way of life may be endangered. The government is building a new highway through the Dumagat's domain, threatening to disrupt their traditional communities with unregulated tourism, soaring real estate prices and ecological degradation. But the eagles could … [Read more...] about To save their home, an Indigenous community turns to the skies
