Lance Stroll will not line up on the Singapore Grand Prix grid having taken the decision “together” with Aston Martin to sit out the race. Stroll suffered a massive crash in Saturday’s qualifying at the Marina Bay circuit when the Canadian clipped the kerbs through the final corner and lost the rear of his AMR23. He speared into the outside wall at speed, his car almost airborne, before spinning back across the circuit. Lance Stroll is “feeling good” after his high-speed Singapore qualifying crash and is excited to get back into the car at the Japanese Grand Prix. Stroll sat out last Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix after a bruising crash in qualifying destroyed his Aston Martin AMR23, the impact ferocious enough to rip off the front left wheel. Although the Canadian was cleared in the medical centre of serious injury, battered and “still sore” , the driver and his team made the call to sit out the race. For the second time in three races Nico Hulkenberg topped the Driver of the Weekend poll, this time following his stern defence from Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso during the Korean Grand Prix. Hulkenberg also won with the highest percentage of votes of anyone this season. Sebastian Vettel made his eighth appearance in the top three this year, but perhaps even more impressive is the fact that he’s now been in the top two for the last four races. Another driver to feature in the top three for their eighth time this year was Kimi Raikkonen who came in third. 1. Nico Hulkenberg Started: 8th Hulkenberg put his ever-improving Sauber an impressive eighth – which would become seventh on the grid on Saturday due to Mark Webber’s ten place grid penalty – just two tenths shy of Alonso’s Ferrari. Williams team principal James Vowles says F1’s budget cap disadvantages smaller teams who lack resources bigger teams already own. The rules limit how much teams can spend on their racing activities over the course of a year. The cap was originally set at $145 million (£114 million), with reductions agreed over the following two years. This season, the cap has been reduced to $138.6 million (£109 million). Vowles, who assumed the role of team principal at Williams just prior to the start of the season, previously worked as a strategist at Mercedes during the period where they won all of their eight constructors’ championship titles and seven consecutive drivers’ championships. The fifth of this year’s F1 cars will be seen for the first time today as Lotus prepare to unveil their E20. The car takes its name from the Enstone factory the team is based at, which was previously home to Renault and Benetton. The E20 is the 20th F1 car to be built there. For a team that missed their development targets during the off-season, McLaren’s resurgence during the season has been impressive to behold. She was widely considered to have been promoted beyond a level she was prepared for. She also had the misfortune to arrive at a team which was on its last legs, and would collapse just four months after Amati’s final appearance for them. Having taken Nelson Piquet to the drivers championship in 1983, Brabham’s descent was startlingly swift. Just five years later it disappeared from the grid – owner Bernie Ecclestone having steadily lost interest in a team which had won just three races in the interim, and become increasingly preoccupied with building his F1 empire.
