After interrupted sessions on Friday, the drivers were out to make up for lost time in the final hour of practice before Australian Grand Prix qualifying. No rain around this time for the drivers, at first anyway, meaning it was a busy track from the very start in FP3 as the teams and drivers made up for Friday’s lost time. It was not only the weather which restricted running yesterday though, as a GPS issue in the opening session only added to the losses. The initial flurry of push laps ended with Sainz in top spot, the Ferrari driver going two-tenths clear of Alonso when he swapped the medium rubber for soft. Perez tried to join the action after an extended stay in the garage to start his session, but his opening lap was wrecked when he came across the Haas of Nico Hulkenberg dawdling on the racing line, who almost proceeded to collect the Red Bull driver as he cut across his path. And as the session ticked past halfway there was another obstruction for all in the form of … [Read more...] about F1 2023 results: FP3 timings from Australian Grand Prix practice

F1 2023 results: Qualifying timings from the Australian Grand Prix
The latest set of F1 2023 results threw up several surprises in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. Q1 saw Sergio Perez carry on his woes from FP3 and slide off into the gravel after locking up at Turn 3, coming onto team radio and saying: “We need to sort that issue man, it was the same ****ing issue again.” This will mean the Red Bull driver is set to start the race right at the back come Sunday, while home debutant Oscar Piastri also narrowly missed out on a place in Q2. With rain thought to be on the way in the final stages of Q3, the drivers looked to get laps in as quickly as possible in the last part of qualifying – and after the first runs, only 0.086s separated the top four drivers, with Verstappen heading a crowded chasing pack despite nursing battery issues on his Red Bull, before reporting downshifts were a problem for him. But a storming final effort saw the two-time World Champion take half a second off his previous best, sealing a … [Read more...] about F1 2023 results: Qualifying timings from the Australian Grand Prix
F1 starting grid: What is the grid order for the Australian Grand Prix?
The provisional F1 starting grid for the Australian Grand Prix has been set for Sunday, and several surprises came to the fore as the drivers struggled to get their tyres working throughout qualifying. Cool temperatures in Melbourne saw the drivers opt to take multiple laps on the same tyres throughout the session, but it was Max Verstappen who took pole position after battling battery and downshift issues through qualifying. Sergio Perez exited early after locking up at Turn 3 on his first qualifying lap, sliding into the gravel trap and bemoaning a continuation of the problem on his RB19 that plagued his FP3 session. It was a thoroughly entertaining Q3 in Melbourne in particular, with a tenth and a half covering the top five drivers after their first run before Verstappen threw the metaphorical cat amongst the pigeons by knocking half a second off his previous best effort. But rather than Fernando Alonso being his nearest challenger, he will be flanked on the grid by the two … [Read more...] about F1 starting grid: What is the grid order for the Australian Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton expects third row to be Mercedes’ qualifying ceiling on Saturday
Lewis Hamilton is not hopeful of Mercedes being able to get onto the front two rows of the grid for the Australian Grand Prix this weekend. Hamilton had finished FP1 second fastest, splitting the Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez at Albert Park in dry conditions, albeit with the session having been interrupted during most of the drivers’ soft tyre runs with a red flag due to safety concerns after the circuit’s GPS system had technical issues. But having made setup tweaks to his Mercedes in time for second practice, the team appeared to struggle for pace by comparison, though it is difficult to read too deeply into the results in FP2 given the majority of the session took place in wet conditions in Melbourne. With Red Bull appearing to hold a clear advantage once again this weekend and Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin nipping at their heels in FP1 and topping FP2, Hamilton is not optimistic about Mercedes being able to muscle in on the fight right at the front … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton expects third row to be Mercedes’ qualifying ceiling on Saturday
Fernando Alonso left with ‘jobs to do’ after FP2 running cut short by rain
Fernando Alonso is pleased that his Aston Martin seems to “behave well” around Albert Park, but a lack of laps left him with “jobs to do” in FP3 to prime himself for qualifying and the race this weekend. Alonso went fastest in a rain-interrupted FP2 session in Melbourne on Friday, with the wet weather hitting before the drivers put on soft tyres for their standard qualifying simulations could take place. This hampered the field for the most part, though the likes of rookie McLaren driver Oscar Piastri were able to experience intermediate tyres for the first time this season and, in the case of the new home hero in Australia, the first time in his Formula 1 career. But the rain was not much use to Alonso and Aston Martin, with the team looking to reel in Red Bull as best it can this weekend in dry conditions. As a result, the double World Champion said the team will be left with more to do in FP3 to get themselves in the right window come qualifying. “It was good, obviously … [Read more...] about Fernando Alonso left with ‘jobs to do’ after FP2 running cut short by rain
George Russell wanted more from qualifying: ‘I was disappointed we didn’t get pole!’
George Russell was not satisfied with his front row position, stating he believed his lap was good enough to secure him pole. It was quite the turnaround of fortune for both Mercedes drivers with Russell securing P2 while his team-mate Lewis Hamilton will start one place further back in Melbourne. This result comes after CEO and team principal Toto Wolff warned not to expect “miracles” before the Imola upgrade package but there was every suggestion the W14 had found some previously hidden pace in Albert Park. As with every other team, it was oftentimes a case of quantity not quality with the soft tyre proving particularly hard to warm up and with an ever-present, but ultimately hollow, threat of rain in the air. With Sergio Perez out in Q1, the battle for the front row slots opened up but few would have predicted it would have been Russell to take it, moving into P2 with one of the final laps of the session. It represents Russell’s best starting position since the 2022 … [Read more...] about George Russell wanted more from qualifying: ‘I was disappointed we didn’t get pole!’
