Ever since its introduction nearly five years ago, the BMW i3 has been one of the most controversial models, yet interesting cars ever design and engineered by BMW. But with all electric cars, the real story has always been around the driving range on electric power. So over the years, BMW has treated the i3 similar to what Apple does with its production – offering consistent and safe upgrades to appease a vocal customer base. As Jalopnik’s resident car buying expert and professional car shopper, I get emails. Lots of emails. I’ve decided to pick a few questions and try to help out. We’ve thought about possibly looking for a short-term rental of the following cars to do the evaluation, but local dealers aren’t interested, and car rental companies don’t have these vehicles: Toyota … [Read more...] about How Can You Test Drive a Car For More Than Just a Few Minutes?
Ignorant car buyers are risking being ripped off by not even test driving a car before handing over their cash. According to a study by online sales site Gumtree, an astonishing 51 per cent of drivers said they wouldn’t drive a car before buying it, with even more failing to carry out basic checks to protect themselves from being left out of pocket. The poll of motorists found half were scared of being ripped off by a used car seller and a third were concerned about not knowing a car’s service history. Yet many failed to take simple precautions. As well as not actually driving the car, 71 per cent go into a deal without researching the vehicle’s value using a price index, 56 per cent don’t ask to see the log book and 64 per cent don’t ask for a receipt.
