No more safety drivers behind the wheel to intervene. Artificial intelligence giant Baidu just launched a driverless robotaxi service in Beijing, China’s Shougang Park. As one of the venues for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, next year the service will begin transporting visitors attending the games. Serving as a big step in the worldwide push towards autonomous driving , Baidu’s Apollo Go Robotaxi service is the first paid autonomous vehicle service where users can hop in a taxi without a backup driver to intervene . Customers will be able to hail a ride using an app, which allows them to locate a taxi within their vicinity. If they are unable to spot the car, users can remotely honk the horn to find their ride. Unlocking the vehicle will require a quick scan of a series of QR codes for identity verification and pandemic prevention. After hopping in, passengers can simply tap on the “start the journey” button. Shortly after, the car will start moving after … [Read more...] about China Launches First Autonomous Taxis In Beijing

They're here to help. Really. The robots are coming, and you have Toyota to thank for it. The automaker has teamed up with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) to look into various applications for what are being called partner robots. No, not that kind of partner – these machines will assist people in everyday activities, from in-home duties such as housework to serving the general population at public venues. In short, Toyota will provide the brawn in the form of a Human Support Robot (HSR), while NTT provides the brain with a form of AI technology developed by the company. Physically, the robot will have the ability to move, pick-up items from the floor, retrieve objects that are some distance away, and communicate with people. While Toyota is creating an actual robot with these capabilities, NTT will tweak and install its AI tech called corevo, which the company says incorporates media processing with extreme accuracy in voice recognition. It will be … [Read more...] about Toyota Wants To Build Semi-Intelligent Lifestyle Support Robots
The two companies have teamed up to create the "world’s first premium, electric, self-driving car." "Thank you, Car." Waymo is launching its self-driving car service to the general public in Arizona this year, and many of the early test riders seem pleased, if the short promo video we saw can be believed, often thanking the vehicle itself for a ride into the future. Today, that future got a bit more luxurious, with the announcement of a partnership between Waymo and Jaguar, specifically Jag’s electric I-Pace SUV. Even more heartfelt thanks to ensue, we’d imagine. The two companies plan to roll out a fleet of more than 20,000 self-driving, fully electric I-Pace SUVs in the next two years, which will give way to a possible one million rides per day. Waymo CEO John Krafcik is billing their newest addition to the fleet as the "world’s first premium, electric, self-driving car," saying that "the vehicle itself we think is graceful, in the long tradition of Jaguar." … [Read more...] about Waymo And Jaguar Plan 20,000 Autonomous I-Pace SUVs In Two Years
It was caught in a parking lot at Costco, blending in with the other cars. Honda first unveiled the eleventh-generation Civic as a prototype back in November 2020 before revealing the production model last month. Now, more relevant images have surfaced after a near-production prototype was caught by a member of the CivicXI forums out in the real world, resting in a parking lot at Costco in Torrance, California. Having revealed the compact sedan in full, the camouflage is now completely gone. Finished in Platinum White, the compact sedan wears California distributor plates, presumably meaning it was being used by a Honda employee from the company's US headquarters in Torrance. Honda certainly didn't rock the boat in terms of exterior design, deciding to tone down the appearance of the previous-generation Civic. That's both good and bad news depending on personal preferences. It certainly doesn't have the most thrilling design among rivals and some would … [Read more...] about 2022 Honda Civic Spotted In The Real World, How Do You Like It?
Phillippe Denes from BS+COMPETITION ended Sørensen’s winning streak by taking victory ahead of Michi Hoyer, who held the flag high for the Asian Absolute Racing team from China. After the opening two rounds of World eX at Silverstone and Sebring, the new fully-electric esports racing series headed to Asia for the third round at the Sepang International Circuit. Much was expected from Lasse Sørensen after winning the first two events of the season so far. The young Dane from TK9 E-SPEED won his races in Levels 2 and 3, but in Level 4, the Semi Final for the pro drivers, he missed his braking point and had an off-track excursion, resulting in Sørensen not progressing to the Final for the first time, guaranteeing a new first-time winner in World eX. Level 5, the Final, saw pro drivers Philippe Denes, Bruno Senna and Dries Vanthoor facing off against esports racers Michi Hoyer, Risto Kappet and Martin Stefanko in the 3-lap heat. Denes and Hoyer led the way, whilst Senna dropped … [Read more...] about Phillippe Denes victorious on World eX’s Asian debut
