While Porsche has built rally-focused racers in the past, the German automaker never came up with anything even remotely resembling this Mission-X concept, which unfortunately exists only on our computer screens. It was designed by Mason Watson, who wanted to combine the “beautiful proportion and simplicity of the 356 with the fun and exposed feeling of the Manx,” the latter being a dune buggy aimed at desert racing. In its final form, the Mission-X definitely looks like it could handle blasting its way through rough terrain at very high speeds, aided by electric power alone. It’s reasonably compact in size, measuring 4,415 mm (173.8 in) in length, 1,995 mm (78.5 in) in width and standing just 1,517 mm (59.7 in) tall. It also features removable exterior panels and guards, which means it can better adapt itself to its surroundings while also making it easier for the owner to perform quick fixes/repairs. It’s not pretty, but that hardly matters with this type of … [Read more...] about If Porsche Designed A Futuristic Rally Car, What Might It Look Like?

Austin, who is surprisingly from Texas, has a BMW that he wants to sell and use the proceeds for something that he can transform into a machine that’s part daily driver and part rally-racer. This is a goal we can all support, so what car should he buy? (Welcome back to What Car Should You Buy? Where we give real people real advice about buying cars. Do you want us to help you find a car? Submit your story on our form.) Here is the scenario: I live in Texas and I drive a big, fancy BMW 5 series. It’s fine, but I’m looking to get into rallycross, so I would like to sell that car and get something that that is more suitable for racing in the dirt. I would prefer a rear-wheel-drive or an all-wheel-drive car, but it must have a manual transmission. I like hatchbacks and wagons and I don’t mind if it is over 10 or 15 years old as long as it is reliable. It also has to be something I can daily drive to work in between the races. In terms of budget, I can spend up … [Read more...] about I Want To Sell My BMW And Replace It With A Rally Car! What Car Should I Buy?
Bhuvan Chowdhary Cars June 5th, 2017 Porsche’s road racing achievements by now, have been documented so many times that one could probably re-construct a forest (if that was a thing) from the paper that has been used to print all their road-racing success stories over the years. That being said, there’s the other side of the company’s motorsport past that isn’t talked about as much as road racing, apart from these, a few rare instances here and there. This has been, in most part, due to Porsche not crediting their own creations enough, to favour other machines that were more relatable to road and track performance. Despite this being the case, the ones who followed Porsche’s motorsport legacy through the late 1960s and 1970s can and will never leave their loyalties with the incredible off-road machines that Stuttgart once made that trumped almost every dirt road. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, … [Read more...] about What’s A Porsche 911 Safari Car And Where Do You Get One?
The London Classic Car Show was held last weekend in ExCeL, one of the first major car events of 2018. ExCeL is an impressive venue, large enough to play host to the show's very own road - the 'Grand Avenue', which was like a catwalk for automotive legends from as early as 1907 right the way up to 2010. Highlights from the Grand Avenue (more details below) included a Jaguar XJ220C, Ferrari Dino 246 F1, Lamborghini LM002, Miura Jota, Stanley H4 Gentleman's Speedy Roadster and the Renault 5 Turbo Maxi. LCCS also celebrated this year's 'motoring icon', F1 World Champion Nigel Mansell, who attended and even drove a 1993 Benetton F1 car on the Grand Avenue. Indoors, you can imagine, this was not quiet. TV actor Phillip Glenister was also in attendance and had curated the 'Getaway Cars' exhibit featuring iconic and infamous escape cars from history, including the Mini Cooper and Impreza P1. The show also featured the public unveiling of the Lister Thunder - a 675hp supercar based on the … [Read more...] about London Classic Car Show: PH Photo Gallery
The UK's Autocar claims to be the world's oldest car magazine. More crucially for us, being in the business since 1895 also suggests that it's printed more automotive advertisements than any other publication.Lucky, some of those end up on a dedicated Twitter account, like this gem from 1984, which informed the public about Porsche's involvement in designing the Airbus A310's flight deck. The wide-body jet was introduced just a year earlier by Swissair. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Porsche explained how it made perfect sense for Airbus' second ever airliner to come with a touch of Weissach, knowing that the 911's interior design is clear and uncluttered, providing great visibility and readability. Airbus wanted to figure out how to create a cockpit with the lowest possible stress levels for pilots—Porsche's army of expert engineers came up with an optimal control environment. The ad also details how Ferdinand Porsche's first breakthrough was an air-cooled six-cylinder … [Read more...] about When Porsche Put The 911’s Engine Into Airplanes

Blame Speed Racer, George Lucas, Steve McQueen, or the countless kids who sat in study hall doodling generic race cars in their notebooks—the T70 long ago became the epitome of the breed. The Lola may not have been the fastest of the Sixties sports racers, but it was an anything's-possible, Swiss Army knife of a car. ► We take a spin in a 286bhp rally Fabia ► Fresh from winning the 2017 WRC 2 championship► What does the future hold for Skoda Motorsport? What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you read the words Skoda Fabia? A cheap, practical supermini that’s still fighting to change the average car buyer’s view of the Skoda brand? Or maybe that TV ad in 2006 where a team of bakers crafted a scale model Fabia out of cake? Well, for those who’ve taken a keen interest in motorsport over the last few years, the humble Skoda resembles something of a championship-winning machine. This year alone, its all-wheel drive rally-prepped alter ego – the Fabia R5 – has taken the WRC 2 (World Rally Championship 2), Asia Pacific, South American, African and European ERC Junior U28 Rally titles, not to mention another 14 national crowns around the world. Of the 13 rallies during the WRC 2 season, 10 were won by crews in … [Read more...] about We ride shotgun in Skoda’s championship-winning Fabia R5 rally car

It’s hard to believe that the Porsche license in racing games was like gold dust not too long ago. Thanks to an exclusivity deal with EA, it didn’t look like we’d see the marque in anything other than Need For Speed.Fast forward to the start of 2018 and Porsche is appearing pretty much everywhere. Milestone’s upcoming offroad racer Gravel is also getting in on the action. Those who decide to preorder Gravel will gain access to two eye-catching Porsche models. Unlike other games, which have offered the manufacturer’s road or circuit vehicles, Gravel is tempting players with a selection of off-road cars. Ordering early will secure access to the 959 Rallye and 924 GTS Rallye.Although far from the conventional Porsche picks, both of these cars are very tempting. We haven’t seen the Porsche 959 Rallye in a rally title since 2002. It last appeared in EA Sports Big’s experimental racer Shox: Rally Reinvented two console generations ago. … [Read more...] about Get Two Rally Porsches When You Preorder Gravel
Do you like the idea of a classic Porsche 911, lifted onto huge rally-spec tyres and modified to take on the toughest rally courses in the world? If not, have someone check you for a pulse, because you can’t buy one if you’re dead. This odd-looking chunk of brilliance is prostate surgeon Erik Brandenburg’s TransSyberia Rally car with which the man himself competed in the 2007 event. Despite being a privateer entry it actually led the fearsome race until late in the rally, when deep water crossing delays dropped it to ninth behind massively modified and factory-backed Porsche Cayennes. It’s rear-wheel drive and more or less unstoppable in the right hands (as long as you stay out of deep rivers). Brandenburg has built 20-25 replicas in various liveries, so one day you could join in the fun with your own 911 Safari. We definitely, 100 per cent want to do that. The tyres are huge 215/85 R16s from Hankook; truck tyres designed for mud and gravel. The traction on … [Read more...] about Feast Your Eyes On The Rally 911 That Almost Humbled Porsche Itself
