BMW appears to be interested in launching a proper supercar, which will take on rivals such as the Porsche 911 Turbo, McLaren 570S and more. Believed to serve as an indirect replacement for the current i8, Autocar reports that the yet-unnamed Bavarian supercar could sit at the high end of the Munich-based car firm’s M division. The new BMW supercar is believed to arrive by 2023, when Ferrari, Lamborghini and other exotic carmakers will already have launched their new electrified models, featuring a really powerful hybrid powertrain. “If you are an engineer, once in your life, you want to make a super-sports car. I think partial electrification will enable that”, BMW board member responsible for product development, Klaus Frohlich, told the British publication. Last week at the Paris Motor Show, Klaus Frolich, a BMW Board Representative for Product Development revealed the idea of giving the i8’s platform a bigger challenge by using it for a more high-performance role. Frolich has expressed his desire for a supercar and revealed that there will be an opportunity for one as soon as the i8 hybrid sports car is due for a life cycle update. According to the BMW big shot, the i8’s chassis is so good that it does not need any updates or improvements before it can be used in a more serious performance car. The Jaguar C-X75 promised to be the modern-day successor to the XJ220, but it fell victim to the Great Recession and never went into production. Jaguar reportedly hasn’t given up on the idea of a high-performance sports car as Auto Express is reporting the company is working on a radical replacement for the F-Type. Everything should be taken with a grain of salt, but the publication claims the mid-engine model will be launched around 2022 and could wear the J-Type moniker. At first glance, this seems like the company is working on a closer competitor to the Porsche 718. However, the publication says the car has much higher targets including models from McLaren. Auto Express even quotes “high-ranking technicians working on the project” as saying the car is being benchmarked against the Acura / Honda NSX. That seems like an odd car to choose, but it’s a natural candidate as the J-Type will reportedly have a hybrid powertrain. Specifications haven’t been … [Read more...] about Jaguar’s Reportedly Working On A Mid-Engine Hybrid Supercar With 550+ HP
Even before its official release, Gas 2 has been excited f***ing psyched about the nearly 1000 HP hybrid McLaren P1 supercar. In the short time it’s been on the planet, the Big Macca has established itself as a true rival to the best that Ferrari and Porsche have to offer. The P1 is a prime example of cutting-edge, racetrack-to-high street technology- and, as quickly as it arrived, it’s going away. For this latest P1 customer project, MSO (McLaren Special Operarions) came up with a naked carbon body in “Lio Blue” tinted lacquer. It’s the first time the fully visual carbon fiber body conversion has been seen since it became available last January, and seems a fitting way to say goodbye. So, for now- and while you still can- take a long look at the last “new” McLaren P1 hybrid hypercar you might ever see. Enjoy! Porsche 918 Spyder road trip celebrating 10 million Facebook fansEnlarge PhotoLast year, 30.7 million cars were recalled in the U.S. That's more or less one car, every second for the entire year—otherwise known as "routine." The Porsche 918 is anything but routine. Same goes for its recalls. Porsche announced Friday that it will recall 305 918 Spyders over a potential suspension issue. Porsche built 918 units of the 918 Spyder. The recall is for the 2015 model year and stems from the potential for cathodic stress corrosion cracking. Porsche said the company cannot assure long-term durability for the suspension components, specifically, the connecting shafts of the longitudinal and transverse control arms. The 918 Spyder burst onto the scene in 2015 as Porsche's world-beating supercar equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. When new, the starting price for a 918 Spyder was an astounding $845,000. An optional Weissach package brought the final total to $929,000. Thus … [Read more...] about Today in first-world problems: Your Porsche 918 supercar may be recalled
