Ever-stirring no matter how uninspired or unsatisfying the medieval fantasy drama could get, they swept across a mechanical miniature of the Seven Kingdoms and the lands beyond, evincing the loose federation's tenuousness and grandeur, as well as the ingenuity and care required to keep the realm from entropy and collapse. Three years after that series's (widely derided) finale, Westeros, the Europe-like landmass on which the Seven Kingdoms sit, returns in a reduced new form. Created by book author George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, "House of the Dragon" (premiering Sunday) is set 200 years before the original show, and comparatively diminutive in scale. Based on parts of Martin's "Fire & Blood" novel, the initially rocky prequel series dives into the … [Read more...] about ‘House of the Dragon’ is ‘Game of Thrones’ with more wigs, less grandeur

‘Beast’: Idris Elba Battles the ‘Cujo’ of Lions
Click here to read the full article. “It’s the law of the jungle,” one character says fairly early on in Beast — “early” as in after we’ve established that a lion decides to become a four-legged vigilante once some poachers slaughter his pride, but before this one-cat army sets his sights on our hero and his family. The way the man inhales and pauses before he delivers the next line suggests he’s about to drop some serious science: “The only law that matters here.” Ah. Ok! To be fair, there are other laws that also apply to this survivalist thriller. Like, for example, the Law of the Multiplex, which says that a movie primarily centered around a notable performer and a 10-words-or-less elevator pitch has to either a) rest steadily enough on that actor’s shoulders to carry it past pitfalls and weak spots, or b) revolve around such a too-big-to-fail, high-concept idea that it could level up anybody to A-list status. And the Law of the Reliable B-Movie Director, which declares … [Read more...] about ‘Beast’: Idris Elba Battles the ‘Cujo’ of Lions
Behind every Trader Joe’s sign is a working artist who painted it
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 Growing up, Zoe Terrell dreamed of becoming an artist - she sketched scenes from her local farmers market and even won drawing competitions in her native South Korea. But she eventually learned what many creative people know too well. "My dad was like, 'Well, drawing is not going to feed you,' " Terrell says. So she studied education in college and, after moving to the United States in 2008, taught Korean - that is, until a curious job listing caught her eye. An ocean away, Terrell called her dad with surprising news: "Hey, guess what, Dad? Now, drawing is going to feed me," she recalls with a laugh. Terrell is one of hundreds of sign artists employed by grocery store Trader Joe's. You probably know the idiosyncratic chain for its eccentric snacks and peppy cashiers, but that festive atmosphere extends to the stores' interior design, too: Each of the 500-plus outposts has custom, … [Read more...] about Behind every Trader Joe’s sign is a working artist who painted it
Eat of the Week: Vietnamese steak and eggs at a Montrose coffee shop that can do it all
Every Friday, Chron's food team shares a standout dish from their experiences dining out during the week. Follow along to see why we love these Houston eats. The eat: Blacksmith's Vietnamese steak and eggs ($15) I am constantly battling the challenge of finding a coffee shop where I love both the coffee and the food menu. Some places have a brew I can't live without, but a sad version of avocado toast, and others have the breakfast tacos I need in my life, but a lackluster coffee bar. And don't get me started on an only-pastry program—this coffee addict needs a savory bite. Despite the plethora of coffee shops in every neighborhood around town, I find myself returning time and time again to Blacksmith in Montrose, where both the eats and drinks have been unparalleled for 10 years, thanks to longtime coffee guru David Buehrer, and talented chef Erin Smith Feges, who created the shop's opening menu. Here, coffee cups are giant and served scalding hot, because who wants to … [Read more...] about Eat of the Week: Vietnamese steak and eggs at a Montrose coffee shop that can do it all
Endurance sports make a life-changing update for nonbinary athletes
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 It would be easy to look at professional triathlete Rach McBride and assume they always feel at home at a starting line. They've placed at world championship races, won Ironman 70.3 (half Ironman) races and conquered the field at gravel cycling races. But until last year, that wasn't the case. Despite a long, impressive list of titles and accomplishments, McBride (they/them), a 44-year-old Canadian, always felt a bit out of place when lining up. At the 2021 Big Sugar Gravel race in Arkansas, however, everything changed. Big Sugar was the first event in which McBride had the opportunity to race in a nonbinary category. The event, says McBride, was nothing short of life-changing. "For a person outside the gender binary, it can be really dysphoric to have to check an 'M' or 'F' box on a registration form, be misgendered at a start or finish line, to have to use gendered … [Read more...] about Endurance sports make a life-changing update for nonbinary athletes

Listen to this article The second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA isn’t that old, arriving for the 2020 model year. However, the German-based automaker is ready to refresh it, including the hotter AMG GLA 35, which our spy photographers have caught testing for the first time. Sandown Supercars: Davison sets early practice pace
Listen to this article The Dick Johnson Racing driver had several stints on top of the times throughout the half-hour sessions, including right at the start when the times were still in the 1m09s bracket. Having been shuffled down the order he then rocketed back to the top with a little over 10 minutes to go with a 1m08.147s. Five minutes later Davison was pipped by Shane van Gisbergen, the Kiwi going one thousandth of a second faster.
