Planet s best of 2017
One of the strangest things about motorsports is that we don’t actually see cars that we would drive on the road. We see some of the same manufacturer names, and sometimes the underlying build of a racecar is similar to something that can be purchased. But it’s not as if you can simply stroll into a dealership and buy your favorite Formula 1 model! Even so, many of us who are enthusiastic about cars look up to professional drivers as the most skilled and knowledgeable auto enthusiasts on the planet. And this begs the question: what do they actually drive on the road? We don’t always know, but these are a few of the world’s best drivers and some of the vehicles they’re known to possess and use away from the track. Sebastian Vettel Vettel was the biggest name in Formula 1 just a few seasons ago, prompting BBC Sport to rank him inside the top-10 of Formula 1’s greatest drivers. He spent the glory days of his career driving for Red Bull before switching … [Read more...] about What Cars Do The World’s Best Drivers Drive?
► A whole year with the new Toyota Prius ► We're testing the regular non-plug-in car ► CAR's long-term test review diary 'I must go, my people need me,' I imagined our space-age fuel-sipper thinking as it silently floated out of CAR's office car park for the last time, returning to its home planet of... Epsom, Surrey. After a year and more than 17,000 miles, we're happy the Hypersonic Red Toyota Prius was part of our fleet.Walk towards it in a car park and it never looked particularly inviting. Even after a year, that aerodynamic 'melted Joker' face could still make small children wince. But once you'd parked your backside on the soft leather armchair, that big swooping dashboard always raised a smile, while the Elysium-esque white surfaces put you in a calm place, and the large glass area let in a lot of light and gave a good view out. Simply getting into the Prius usually brought a great sense of relief.I regularly took the wheel of the Prius … [Read more...] about There’s nothing to be scared of here: we say goodbye to our Toyota Prius
It sounds like a sci-fi novel, or maybe even a Fredrick Forsyth knockoff written during the Seventies heyday of Cold War action/adventure books: Six Months of the Equinox. You can imagine the plot, right? Something happens to freeze the planet’s orbit at a certain point. The seasons stop. Mayhem ensues. There’s a machine that might be able to restart the orbit, but a cabal of Russian oligarchs makes a plan to seize it. Only one man — let’s call him Chest Rockwell — can save us.The reality behind the title is nearly as frightening: It’s the half-year that my current wife, known to all and sundry as Danger Girl even though (SPOILER ALERT) she is actually old enough to vote, traded in one of her Tahoes for a Chevrolet crossover in an attempt to balance her budget. This is the kind of thing that I typically associate with bubbleheads who can’t do math, but Danger Girl is a CPA with extensive financial training. Was she right to do it? It’s a … [Read more...] about No Fixed Abode: Fear of a $160 Planet
What is it: The hottest of hot hatchesKey Competitors: Ford Focus ST, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Subaru WRXBase Price: $34,100 As-Tested Price: $34,100Highlights: The all-new 2017 Civic Type R is the fastest, most powerful Honda, and the first-ever Honda Type R model to be sold in America. Our Opinion: More than anything else on the market, the Civic Type R is a departure from the its base-model stock. The Civic Si feels...well, like a fun, punched-up Civic. The Type R is a whole 'nother beast. Unlike the Impreza/WRX/WRX STI, Golf/GTI/R or Focus/ST/RS triplets, there's no linear progression from not-too-hot to bonkers here; it transforms the competent but quotidian platform upon which it is based completely.Am I complaining? Hell no. Give me more expectation-defying cars like this. Whatever preconceived notions you might have, though, know that you'll need to recalibrate them before you jump in; this is a big departure from the great and famous Hondas the preceded it. America … [Read more...] about Honda Civic Type R essentials: One of the best cars on the road
