Biden, in talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, detailed plans to increase the number of Navy destroyers based in Rota, Spain, from four to six. Biden said the move was one of multiple announcements that he and NATO allies would make to help bolster the alliance in the region during the summit. Biden arrived in Spain for the NATO summit amid an intense barrage of Russian fire across Ukraine— including a horrific missile attack on a shopping mall in Kyiv on Monday— and growing weariness over the grinding war that is battering the global economy. “Sometimes I think Putin’s … [Read more...] about Biden, NATO to beef up force posture amid Russian aggression

India To Increase Car-Crash Test Speed To Reflect Faster Traffic
India aims to improve car safety standards and will raise the speed in its crash tests as better roads increase the likelihood of faster vehicles being involved in accidents and adding to one of the world's worst car-crash death tolls. The Road Transport Ministry has produced a 197-page draft outlining its plan to establish a new safety rating system. The draft is expected to be finalised over coming weeks. With roads improving, Indian cars are going faster and so they have to be tested at higher speeds in line with international standards, said a government official involved in the reform. "Road safety rules in India need to be at par with the world," said the official, who declined to be identified as he is not authorised speak to the media. "It is essential to increase the crash test speed," the official said. Under the ministry's proposal, the speed at which a car undergoes a crash test will be raised to 64 km per hour (40 mph), in line with a global standard, from 56 … [Read more...] about India To Increase Car-Crash Test Speed To Reflect Faster Traffic
Netflix’s plan to fix its subscription crisis starts in Asia
Netflix is looking to Asia after its shock first-quarter slowdown, seeking to both maintain growth in the one region where it's still adding subscribers and replicate its success there in other parts of the world. Despite plans to curb overall spending, investment in Asia will keep growing, including financing for the production of local films and series, Tony Zameczkowski, vice president of business development for Asia Pacific, said in an interview. While Netflix will continue to offer low-price, mobile-only membership across Asia, it's also seeking more partnerships with wireless operators and digital payment companies to reach more potential customers in a region where credit card use is less common, he said. The company's Asia strategy is informing moves in other emerging markets, where the platform must also grow to balance out saturation in North America and Europe. "Asia is a great proxy for other markets in the world," said Zameczkowski. "There are similarities between … [Read more...] about Netflix’s plan to fix its subscription crisis starts in Asia

Meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the opening of the alliance’s annual leaders' summit in Madrid, Biden said “NATO is strong and united" and that steps to be taken during the gathering will “further augment our collective strength.” The White House said Biden's commitments mean the U.S. will maintain a presence of 100,000 troops in Europe, up 20,000 from the levels before the Ukraine war began, for the “foreseeable future.” Biden opened his participation in the summit by announcing the permanent basing of a U.S. military garrison in Poland. Kelsie Whitmore is the first woman to play in the Atlantic League, and she knows what is possible and what isn’t
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Kelsie Whitmore always wanted to play in the major leagues. She did not always want to admit it. "Are you sure?" people would respond, after they asked what she wanted to do. Even at an early age, she knew what they really meant: "You know you can't do that, right?" They would, and still do, tell her how hard she would have to work, as if a girl who played baseball with the boys from the moment she started Little League didn't know that already. She knew they thought she probably couldn't do it. In fairness, they had never seen anyone try. Whitmore was never afraid that that skepticism would make her question whether she belonged. As the first woman to start a game in the Atlantic League, an independent circuit, she had never exactly blended in. But she has stood in the same outfield as former major leaguers, tracking and … [Read more...] about Kelsie Whitmore is the first woman to play in the Atlantic League, and she knows what is possible and what isn’t
