Saldana gets by Clauson, Stenhouse for POWRi midget win
Joey Saldana of Brownsburg, Indiana led the final five laps in the Shannon Saldana-owned Esslinger-powered Spike Chassis, cruising to victory in the non-points event organized by the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series on the 1/6 "Mini-Magic Mile" at the Southern Illinois Center at the Du Quoin State Fair Grounds. Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Indiana (in file photo above) started on the outside front row in the Rusty Kunz Racing/Curb-Agajanian, Esslinger-powered Spike Chassis and lurched into the lead at the drop of the green flag with 2013 POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series Rookie of the Year, Parker Price-Miller in tow. As Clauson checked out and started working his way towards lap traffic, Andrew Felker's Fontana-powered Boss Chassis would slow entering turn three, while simultaneously Spencer Bayston's Esslinger-powered Spike would slow on the high-side entering turn three, bringing out the caution and momentarily cooling off the Great Clips Battle at the Center … [Read more...] about Saldana gets by Clauson, Stenhouse for POWRi midget win
Howard to enter team in 2019 USF2000 series
Jay Howard Driver Development (JHDD), which started as a kart team in 2012, expanded to the US Formula 4 Championship last year, graduating three of its karters – Sam Paley, Parker Locke and Max Peichel – the latter of whom has already moved into USF2000 this season. The squad’s current five-car line-up holds a commanding lead in the 2018 US F4 team championship standings. Howard says the further expansion to USF2000 furthers its mission of “advancing drivers from the karting ranks to junior open-wheel categories en route to the Verizon IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500.” Howard, who claimed the USF2000 championship in 2005 and added the Indy Lights title one year later, has already been involved as a driver coach for Pro Mazda race winner David Malukas and current USF2000 dominator Kyle Kirkwood. Said Howard: “I am really excited to add USF2000 to my driver development ladder program. I have always wanted to be a part of the Mazda Road to Indy. It was just a case of … [Read more...] about Howard to enter team in 2019 USF2000 series
Donington Park, Silverstone, Brands Hatch and the British Grand Prix
Earlier this month Bernie Ecclestone announced Donington Park will host the British Grand Prix from 2010 instead of Silverstone . In July 1999 Bernie Ecclestone announced Brands Hatch would host the British Grand Prix from 2002 instead of Silverstone. But that never came to be – the race stayed at Silverstone. So what happened? And can it tell us anything about the proposed 2010 British Grand Prix at Donington Park? Foulston courts Silverstone The announcement in May 1999 came after Ecclestone had met with Nicola Foulston, who at the time was chief executive of Brands Hatch Leisure. BHL owned the Kent circuit which last held the British Grand Prix in 1986. Foulston had been trying since mid-1998 to purchase Silverstone from the British Racing Drivers’ Club but was facing competition for the circuit. Foulston went to Ecclestone and told him the circuit owners had received offers from potential buyers. This apparently angered Ecclestone as the circuit’s contract to hold … [Read more...] about Donington Park, Silverstone, Brands Hatch and the British Grand Prix
Franzoni wins race, Martin takes the title
At the drop of the green flag, the polesitting ArmsUp Motorsports car of Franzoni made a perfect getaway again, and Martin dropped to third as Cape Motorsports' with Wayne Taylor Racing teammate Parker Thompson edged past on the inside of Turn 2. But while Martin didn’t need to take any chances – just keep title rival teammate Thompson in sight – he gathered momentum through the Corkscrew on the opening lap and dived down the inside of Thompson at Rainey Corner, a very fast downhill left-hander, to grab second. This shuffling allowed Franzoni to cross the start-finish line 2.2sec to the good after just one lap, but Martin had landed the psychological blow in the title fight. It would prove to be the knockout punch. It also meant that Thompson was directly in the firing line of the hard chargers with nothing to lose – Jordan Lloyd of Pabst Racing, JAY Motorsports’ Luke Gabin and their own Cape Motorsports’ teammate, Nikita Lastochkin. Yet Thompson to his great credit didn’t lose … [Read more...] about Franzoni wins race, Martin takes the title
St Pete USF2000: Megennis scores first win of new era
Polesitter Megennis, from as early as Lap 2, started to edge away into a race of his own, while behind him Pabst Racing’s Calvin Ming held down second and Dakota Dickerson of Newman Wachs Racing made a strong start to grab third. However, after pulling out a 3.5-sec lead, Megennis’ race became much less straightforward as Cape Motorsports’ rookie, Oliver Askew, got past Ming. Askew started chipping way at Megennis’ lead and then started carving huge chunks out of it. Even when Megennis laid his (to that point) fastest lap on Lap 15, Askew was almost 0.4sec quicker so that by Lap 16, the gap was 2sec. A lap later, with eight minutes of the race to go, it was down to 1.7. This was going to be close. Askew was a full half second quicker on Lap 18 as he dipped well into the 1min14s, and on lap 19 the lead was just half a second. However, once up on Megennis’ tail, Askew went into full stalking mode and discovered Megennis’s defense was even stronger than his pace. As late as the … [Read more...] about St Pete USF2000: Megennis scores first win of new era
Trois-Rivieres Oriol Servia Review
ORIOL SERVIA CLAIMS SECOND PLACE AT TROIS-RIVIERES TROIS-RIVIERES, Que., Canada (Aug. 3, 1998) - - Oriol Servia approached round 11 of the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship at Trois-Rivieres, Que., as he has in 10 previous Indy Lights races - confident, prepared, and hopeful despite not reaching the podium. That changed at the Player's Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres, Sunday, Aug. 2, where he scored an Indy Lights career best finish of second place. Servia, who started on the outside pole, ran an error free race around the 1.521-mile, 10-turn temporary street circuit in the No. 32 Catalonia/Elf/RACC/Heritage Bank Lola and scooted across the finish line 1.31-seconds behind race winner Cristiano da Matta. His previous best was fourth place in the season opener at Homestead Motorsports Complex (Fla.). Trois-Rivieres is his second consecutive top-five finish including fifth place in round 10 at Michigan Speedway.
