Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Afghanistan’s Taliban-appointed foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, struck the deal Sunday in Islamabad, according to Pakistan's Foreign Ministry. The agreement is designed to improve bilateral trade, combat terrorism and boost bilateral ties. (AP) — A former Kansas lawmaker who was convicted of 12 felonies for lying on applications for federal COVID-19 relief is trying to avoid spending any time in prison, with his attorney citing his Air Force service in a combat zone as one reason. But prosecutors have asked a federal judge to sentence former Republican state Rep. Michael Capps, of Wichita, to four years and three months in prison. They have argued in court documents that he “continues to show neither remorse nor contrition" over stealing nearly $500,000 in funds meant to help businesses remain afloat during the coronavirus pandemic. U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren scheduled Capps' sentencing for Thursday in Wichita. A jury convicted the 45-year-old former lawmaker in December of four counts of wire fraud, four counts of money laundering, three counts of making false statements on loan applications and one count of bank fraud. The war in Ukraine and the flooding in Pakistan helped push the number of people internally displaced worldwide to an all-time high of 71.1 million in 2022, according to a report published Thursday by the Norwegian Refugee Council. A "perfect storm" of conflict, natural disasters and the ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic combined to trigger "displacement on a scale never seen before" in 2022, the nonprofit's secretary general, Jan Egeland, said. A global food security crisis, fueled by the war in Ukraine, which is a major grain exporter, has only added to the plight of those uprooted from their homes in search of safety and shelter. The pilot, however, ejected and escaped the crash uninjured. The crash took place during a training sortie. The two who passed are women residing in the Bahlolnagar district of Hanumangarh. Apart from them, one male civilian is also said to be injured. A rescue operation is said to have begun. It was just around a year ago when we got the news of a MiG-21 erupting into flames in Rajasthan, and now, this. The previous crash happened in Barmer, Rajasthan, killing both pilots.
