Scott Dixon is one of the most decorated IndyCar drivers of all-time, and the Kiwi says he has no regrets about not driving in Formula 1. Dixon secured his fifth IndyCar Championship at Sonoma on Monday, and his five is now second only to AJ Foyt’s seven titles in the series. The 38-year-old also sits in third on the all-time wins list, with his 44 victories only behind Mario Andretti (52) and Foyt (67). Back in 2000, there were high hopes that he would become the first New Zealander to race in Formula 1 since Mark Thackwell in 1984. Dixon had just got the move up to ChampCar, which was seen as the second division of single-seaters, behind F1. However, his first real opportunity did not come until 2004, the year after he won his first IndyCar title, when he tested with the BMW Williams team. “We had a good test with Williams but it was a bit of a funky time,” Dixon admitted to Stuff NZ. “I’d just won my first IndyCar championship and we were going for a … [Read more...] about No F1 career, ‘zero regrets’ for Scott Dixon
Three years and 85,000km into the life of this car, I finally think I’m ready to owner-review it. What is it? A 2015 MY16 Skoda Octavia Ambition Plus six-speed manual with a couple of options. I should start that it took me over 12 months to research and eventually purchase this particular model. I’d like to think that this isn’t uncommon for Skoda owners. I’d like to think that because it somewhat justifies the many hours spent online and at dealerships. My previous car was basically the same car – an MY11 90TSI manual. I was reasonably happy with that car, plus the little issues I had seemed to be addressed – mostly the lacklustre performance with the 90TSI engine. So after comparing and driving most of the competitors in this pricepoint, I soon realised nothing could tick as many boxes. I opted for the Tech Pack and added a power tailgate, metallic paint, 18-inch wheels, and Smartlink. I managed to get all this for almost exactly $30K – … [Read more...] about 2015 Skoda Octavia 110TSI Ambition Plus review
Of all the places we visit and stories we tell on Speedhunters, in my mind it’s pretty hard to beat a shop tour. Getting to go behind closed doors at workplaces that specialise in making cars look better or perform better, or even better, both, is a definite perk of the job, but it also provides an opportunity to give you guys a look into places that you probably wouldn’t be able to otherwise. In this particular case it really rings true; unless you live in Auckland, New Zealand and are familiar with JTune Automotive, that is. I’ve been meaning to bring you a story on this local (to me) performance workshop for a while now, and recently I was able to spend some time at JTune taking a closer look at what they do. And they do a lot. I’ve known JTune’s Jacky Tse for well over 10 years, and in that time he’s gone from being a Honda dealership technician to the owner of one of Auckland’s most well respected performance … [Read more...] about Building JDM Dreams In NZ: A Look Inside JTune
