As automakers shift to building electric vehicles, they are also working to clean up the manufacturing process. Brands big and small are pushing to decarbonize their factories, and that includes finding new, sustainable energy sources to power assembly lines. Stellantis is dipping its wheel into the space, announcing today that it has signed an agreement with Vulcan Energy Resources to explore supplying one plant with geothermal energy. This would be the automaker's first use of geothermal energy, but the project is still years away from fruition. The project's first stage at Stellantis' Rüsselsheim factory in Germany will include a pre-feasibility study alongside Vulcan constructing geothermal assets at the location. If this is deemed successful, the project's next phase will focus on drilling and advanced studies and development. The two have signed a binding term sheet for the endeavor. Stellantis, the conglomerate that combined PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles , … [Read more...] about Stellantis To Explore Using Geothermal Energy Source For German Factory

Watch Richard Hammond React To His Many Car Crashes
For over 20 years, Richard Hammond has made a fine career as one of the top presenters of automotive entertainment. Part of the trio that made Top Gear and The Grand Tour so entertaining to watch, he embarked on epic journeys and drove a collection of rare, exotic, and sometimes odd machinery. He also crashed many of those same rare, exotic, and odd machines, regardless of if they had two wheels, four wheels, or no wheels. To be fair, it's not crashing if you're playing a sport as he did early on in a Toyota Aygo. It also shouldn't count if you're tethered to another car or if another person remotely operates your vehicle. Even so, there are plenty of examples of Hammond crashing, rolling over, or obliterating objects in an assortment of cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, boats, buses, and ditch diggers. Briefly, we see the infamous hill climb where Hammond oversteers a Rimac Concept One, sending the million-dollar prototype backward down an incline, where it lands upside … [Read more...] about Watch Richard Hammond React To His Many Car Crashes
WRC Monte Carlo: Dominant Ogier scores record ninth victory
Listen to this article Ogier and new co-driver Vincent Landais clinched nine of the 18 stages in what proved to be an unusually dry WRC season opener to claim a comfortable win by 18.8s from world champions Kalle Rovanpera and Jonne Halttunen. Competing in only a partial campaign, Ogier once again outlined his supreme knowledge of the twisty Monte Carlo roads, and was never headed throughout the four days of competition. After winning the first five stages, Ogier established a relatively comfortable lead initially over Toyota team-mate Elfyn Evans, who appeared to be the only driver able to compete with the Frenchman. Ogier’s streak of stage wins was completed despite losing hybrid boost for two stages on Friday morning, and after a late gearbox change due to a clutch issue. Once Evans suffered a right rear puncture in Stage 5, Ogier was gifted a lead he would extend to 36.0s before Rovanpera found his rhythm and began to whittle the advantage down. Rovanpera managed … [Read more...] about WRC Monte Carlo: Dominant Ogier scores record ninth victory
FIA: WRC “house is not on fire” with only three manufacturers
Listen to this article Following Citroen’s departure at the end of 2019, rallying’s top tier has been contested by three manufacturers in Toyota, Hyundai and Ford, although the latter is a semi works relationship with British squad M-Sport. This season marks the second year of the WRC’s Rally1 hybrid regulations which were originally conceived to attract fresh manufacturer interest, but has only so far only seen existing marques Toyota, Hyundai and Ford through M-Sport sign up to the current ruleset in place until the end of 2024. However, Skoda, Alpine and the Stellantis Group, which owns Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroen, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot and Vauxhall brands, have declared their interest in joining the WRC, if regulations are changed in the future. A tweaked set of Rally1 regulations is expected to be revealed in two month's time for 2025 onwards which is hoped to cement the WRC’s future in a bid to attract new brands, following … [Read more...] about FIA: WRC “house is not on fire” with only three manufacturers
WRC confident its 2025 Rally1 rules evolution can entice new brands
Listen to this article The WRC has been working alongside the FIA to develop the future pathway for rallying's top tier ever since the launch of the Rally1 hybrid rules last year. This has included a series of discussions with manufacturers already involved in the discipline and other marques not currently competing, to understand the required ruleset for 2025 onwards that will attract new brands to Rally1. It is anticipated that this evolution of Rally1 regulations will be presented in two months' time. The regulations will build on the current Rally1 platform, which features cars built around tougher and safer space-frame chassis, and powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged internal combustion engine coupled to 100kW hybrid unit, that can deliver 500 horsepower when hybrid boosts are engaged. The WRC has hinted that an expansion of the current hybrid unit is among its plans for the new regulations, given there is much more capacity in the system constructed by Compact … [Read more...] about WRC confident its 2025 Rally1 rules evolution can entice new brands
WRC developing experimental propulsion class
Listen to this article Rallying’s top tier is currently in the process of formulating its immediate and long term regulations, with propulsion a key topic for discussion. Last year the WRC introduced a move to hybrid power, and became the first FIA world championship to use 100% sustainable fuel, through its Rally1 regulations, which will remain in place until the end of 2024. It is widely expected that these regulations will continue into 2025, albeit tweaked to include an expanded use of the hybrid power unit on events, as revealed earlier this week. Beyond 2025 the picture is unclear as the automotive industry continues to evaluate its future direction. Full electric, hydrogen and synthetic fuels are all methods up for discussion that could form the base for rallying in the future. Last year the FIA added a new full electric tier to the rally pyramid in Rally5e, which allows road-going EV vehicles to be converted to rally cars. Opel, understood to be among a group of … [Read more...] about WRC developing experimental propulsion class
